Fo4 Intro Too Short?

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 5:20 am

Does anyone remember when Fo3 came out and everyone complained about the lengthy intro? What about Skyrim? They shortened the intro for Skyrim and loads of people still complained about the intros for both of those games being too long and drawn out.
So Fo4 comes around and shortens the intro dramatically. Now everyone is complaining that the intro is too short. You don't get enough time with your character and their settings before tragedy breaks out.
So which is it? Do we hate long intros or do we hate short intros?
Perhaps Bethesda should by default make all intros long and also give the option to skip?

I expected there to be a longer intro into you becoming Dragonborn in Skyrim. While I understand why the intro of Fallout 4 was rushed (because theres just so much to do!) I think they could have spent a little more time bonding with the family. The most bonding I did was listening to my wife compliment my nose as I stretched it around. :P

Yeah maybe some more bonding time, but I get why they made the choice. You know? People begged and begged for shorter intros across the board.

I thought it was too short. I'm about to sit down and commit hours to a voice character with a backstory, I'd like a bit of exposition. With an open world sandbox like FO4 I don't think the story gets told quite as well as it has to account for everyone - it's not like TW3 where you have a set character with fairly rigid motivations and you can develop the character as you go.

So maybe a somewhat longer intro to introduce the character and get me to feel something for him/her/my son would have been good. It could also have been an elongated way to test and help define your character so that even though you come with a packaged backstory it's still somewhat tailored to you. I just felt I didn't have enough engagement with my PC as I stepped out of the vault.

EDIT: Conversely, in something like ES games it's just a massive chore as it's unskippable and you just want to get on with creating your Prisoner. FO4 is different though and for me requires a slightly more nuanced introduction.

Totally. Get to the core of the game quicker. If anything it actually helps you separate yourself from being that mother/father looking for their son if you choose to neglect that for an RP or something.

I loved the opening sequence it was so well done & very emotive. Yeah could have gone on a little longer but sometimes to much of a good thing can ruin the initial impact if you get my meaning.

I prefer longer intros but I'd be fine with a short one like this if it didn't svck.

Agreed. I wish it had been shorter and not so cringe-inducing (the whole bathroom scene couldn't be over quickly enough). Sorter intros where you can just set up your character and get a feel for your role in the greater game are much better than hours worth of a tutorial.

In this particular game I already didn't want to care about this family I was forced to have. A longer tutorial would have just made the entire experience worse.

I don't know, people on these boards are still talking about how the intro is too long and railroads you into playing a specific character. In the end, you can't please everyone, but I felt it was short and generic enough to give me some freedom in how I play my character, but long enough to pull me into the story.

I also don't think going through it multiple times will be especially difficult. A good length overall, then.

Too Short but only because I really liked the FO3 growing up intro story line, each section was quick enough to make it move along reasonably well and you did get some feeling of living in a vault. This OMG they are dropping bombs almost straight away and then freezing you ASAP felt sort of hurried?

I wouldn't say a long intro is better, but a BETTER intro is better. I have no problem playing a Good long intro, as long as most of it can be skipped in following play-throughs.

What we got in FO4 is a Bad Short intro.

Thought it was just right, not too boring like the fallout 3 "sweet roll" stupidity with the bully who wants to be a hair stylist and not too short like New Vegas "shot in the head" not knowing who you are or where you come from till much later and only giving hints.

It is to short for the story it wants to tell. If they want you to be attached to your spouse and child they should have had more scenes together with them. It feels kind of rushed if you want to play the revenge/find my son character.

I prefer the shorter intro in this game. It gives you just the right amount of time to set up your character, introduced you to the story, and give you just enough reason to care about pursuing it once you're in the game proper. Me, I consider everything up to exiting Vault 111 for the first time to be part of that intro so it all fits together nicely.

Though, admittedly, I'd rather avoid repeating it too often if it can be helped :P

It's not too short for my taste, I don't like drawn out intros...especially when creating multiple characters (Skyrim was painful with my 10+ characters). I love that they give us an opportunity to change everything right before re-entering the world, perfect save spot to skip the intro on future builds.

Its a nice intro not to long and not to short. You can go around the house and click on different stuff and hear comments or you can just skip that altogether. I did the intro a couple of times and then I just made a save before the exit and I use that now when I start over.

I don't really care how long the intro is, since I'm sure mods will eventually fix that, like Skyrim's mod. Anyways, I though the intro to Fallout 4 was pretty bad. Vault guy comes to your door, asking you to sign up for a vault space or whatever, then nukes hit right after you're done.

I thought both 3 and 4 had the right lengths.

Living in the vault SHOULD have seemed like it was almost forever. It makes the whole concept really pay off when you leave. 3 is my least liked Fallout but the prologue was aces.

With 4, we SHOULD only get a taste of what the past was like. We know more than enough for character rp purposes, the concept is pretty straightforward--1950s' version of the future. So all we need is to just get a glimpse of what a day in the life felt like without having to actually do mundane things for an entire game day.
