FO4 Transport and Mounts

Post » Wed Jul 24, 2013 7:52 am

When I was playing FNV the other day I noticed many more vehicles than I used to. When exploring I found a motorcycle that was in mint condition in comparison to other objects in Fallout. When I shot it it had the mini nuke explosion, so I assumed that it was powered by nuclear cells. My question is, why weren't these implemented in a way that we could drive them? I get how it could break exploration, but if a little more time was put in to this it could have been a great inclusion in the game. I dont think it breaks lore because in F2 you got a car. Plus, humanity rebuilt many things after the war. You're telling me that we can get Helios One and Hoover Dam working but not a small motorcycle with a working power source? Was vehicles not being used for the lore, was it due to laziness, or was it due to engine limitations?

Limited development resources/time would be the reason (if it were a considered feature at all). There was a lot more stuff Obsidian wanted to put into New Vegas but couldn't.

There's no need to add in vehicles. Look at Skyrim's horses with its glorified Gamebryo engine. The engine doesn't handle believable vehicle speeds well.

On that note, adding in vehicles would mean having to make a bigger world with more filler landscape between each PoI. I'd rather walk in a small world rich in detail rather than ride a motorcyles and large empty maps with the occasional burned out home husk. If I wanted that I have GTA IV to play.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, because I felt that Skyrim implemented horses very well without making the landscape dull or adding "fillers". The map was huge and I'm sure that we wont get small maps for Fallout, because having a large area was one of the most requested things. But on another note, vehicle speed can be regulated in a way that the landscape wont be compromised. I mean, FNV was okay and that had huge areas that were just empty. Why wouldn't it work on a Fallout map like that?

Because the Horses are really just you sprinting a lot longer. They didn't really add anything in that respect. The perk of the horse is clunky combat and speed when you're overburdened. With New Vegas, no it couldnt, the way Fallout 3 and New Vegas are structured, you'd only be able to make them go so fast, because if you make them go at break neck speeds, you'll zip through cells before they can load right, likely causing the game to crash.

There's a mod for that

http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/49042/?

I tried this mod out. It was fun but the problem is, the map is small enough that getting in a car, driving to the destination and getting out takes almost as long as just running there. So, that's the real reason why it was not implemented, no place to go in a car. Nothing is far enough away. Made sense in Fallout 2, but that map was much larger.

Yeah, but do the bike HAVE to go that fast? Yes, they would be quick in real terms but what about changing it for the sake of gameplay? I dont think its impossible to correctly implement it. Horses in oblivion didnt cause the game to crash, and that had similar map size to FNV. I understand that horses are slower than bikes in real life, but for the sake of gameplay it could be slowed down but not to the point where the feature is useless. And yes, even if its just unlimited sprint its useful.

Horses aren't unlimited, their stamina just lasts longer. As for the bikes, what you're asking for is a redundancy. Why incorporate a bike if the only real perk is to go at the same speed as you running, but on a bike?

Well then they are just doing it for the sake of doing it. To add bikes to the lore or whatever, some guy could just tell you that he was almost killed on his bike or something.

Do you also have the mod allowing sprint or did you go there in the normal fashion? Anyways, what if the speeds were balanced better? If I used a bike or car it would be better than walking but not OP. But at the moment one of the major flaws of Fallout is that you really have no reason to walk to a location when fast ravel is available. Are there really any other ways to fix that issue?

You'd still have to worry about things like load time, rendering, map size, enemies, locale, and building placement with vehicles. Even if it was just slightly faster than walking/sprinting everywhere, the amount of havoc it could wreak on the system could be astronomical.

Assuming Fallout 4 will be similar to 3 and New Vegas I say no vehicles. I don't see a way to implement a vehicle without watering down another part of the game.

Probably the best implementation of Vehicles I can think of would be a Vertibird carrige. You go up to it, Hire it to take you to a certain location (it would have to be a camp associated with the faction) or twon, and it was only introduced half-way into the game

I agree use the Bicycle in place of a sprint, and add a Brahmin as a non human companion with a large weight limit (1000+) but no offensive capability

We'll be needing bigger maps and efficient work put into vehicles before doing such. If done well, would I be okay with it.

I think if they did add vehicles to the game they would have to run on a fuel source they would diminish so the player would have to search for fuel source.

I'm for having a vehicle being the only way that a character can fast travel. Fast travel to a location, get off bike/out of car, explore, loot, load up vehicle so that you are not loaded down. Check that vehicle has enough charge to get to your chosen fast travel destination. Get back on/into vehicle. Fast Travel.

That as prospects like the car is solar powered so needs time to recharge between trips (can not fast travel for say 15 minutes) and you can be attacked on route (random encounter style)

I think getting a http://www.likecool.com/Gear/Toy/FisherPrice%20Power%20wheels%20Cadillac%20Escalade/FisherPrice-Power-wheels-Cadillac-Escalade.jpg would be kinda funny. In order to keep it operational, you have to keep putting Fission Batteries into it. Ride one of those around while in PA for extra lolz

Yup, and your Follower has to hold onto the back of it. Imagine Fawkes or Lily holding onto the back of that thing while your driving it.
