If FO4 uses same engine as Skyrim, will 3.1GB limit apply?

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 9:49 am

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't modding for Skyrim limited by the Creation Engine's tendency to crash when more than 3.1GB memory is used?

http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1033442-skyrim-31gb-crash-limit-skyrim-performance-monitor/page-4

It would really be a shame if this limit applies to FO4, limiting the amount of mods that one can have running (especially hi-res texture mods).

Any thoughts?

its uses upgraded version of that engine yes, will have that kind limit no, why becuase newer consoles and pc's have more memory than that.

and still don't belive me in almost every interveiw that todd has given one things he points out is that newer consoles/pc have much more memory and thats allowed them to do more with game than before.

Well, there is some speculation at this point that, since the new gen of consoles are 64bit, they'll have updated the engine to be 64bit.

Not to mention that the new consoles are also 64 bit systems......

The limit was not strictly on the engine but enforced by the fact that skyrim was build as x86 executable. I hope they will provide 2 executables and one launcher to select the right one.

That was also done to allow the game to run on X360 and PS3 If I'm right the available memory should be around 8 Gb this thime.

Assuming they actually do a 32bit version. Considering the extra console memory to use and the fact that people are shifting to 64bit windows quite rapidly, they may not bother with a 32bit exe.

No, Fallout 4 will likely run 8GB of RAM. Todd has said more than once how nice it would be to make a nextgen console game because he could use 8Gigs instead of 4. Thus, we can assume Fallout 4 is using 8Gigs as well.

That would be my guess. There are going to be very few 32 bit machines still out there in the world that have hardware capable of running the game......... but hey, ya just never know. :D

Hell, last gen didn't even have 4GB, it had 512MB. 512MB! It's crazy that Skyrim could even run on that.

Yes, we pc users have suffered enough from our games being belittled by consoles...

Imagine a game where bethesda assumed everyone had GTX Titans, 16GB of RAM, and a i7 (quadcore) OC'd to 4.5GHz.....That game would be incredible. Of course, I would join console users in not being able to run it, but its a nice thought....

Just to temper expectations a bit, console games don't get to use the full 8GB of RAM the console has because the operating systems reserve ~2GB for background tasks etc. In fact I believe the Xbox One only guarantees full access to 5.5GB with an additional 0.5 GB available when the OS feels like it. Still, a massive improvement over the 512 MB the last gen consoles had, an increase of ~12x.

Yeh, that game would have such a small target audience, would probably bankrupt a company from the sheer amount of work out into it which equals high cost and then the low sales would put them millions into the red.

Ok, maybe not bankrupt but definitely financially cripple for their next title.

Memory shouldn't be an issue with Fallout 4. Even the Xbox One which is the weakest of the 3 has almost 10 times the memory of it's predecessor.

Didn't Crysis do this? When it first came out barely any PC could run the game at max settings.

Yeah, however a lot of that is because the game itself just runs pretty poorly. Crysis 2 runs better on the same hardware with the same or improved graphics.

The PC should be able to tap into more than that, IIRC a 64 bit application can tap into a considerable amount of RAM along the lines of "more memory than you can physically fit in your PC" being the general comment.

Windows is kind of funky and it depends on what version of Win32 and Win64 as to how much ram it will support.

Currently Windows server editions support up to 16TB of memory. Microsoft has been known to cripple their el cheapo versions of Windows, so Windows 7 Basic (64bit) is limited to 8 GB but the 64bit Professional and above will support 192 GB of memory. With Win8 64bit the cheapest version will support 128 GB of memory and the Professional and Enterprise versions 512 GB of memory.

Basically, if you have a desktop PC running 64bit Windows 7 Professional or better, you are going to have one hell of a time loading your motherboard with more memory than your OS can handle.

Some chance 32 bit will not be supported, consoles has 5-6 GB memory for game, so chances the pc will have to be have to have more than 4 GB memory.

Another reason to be 64 bit only is that 32 bit windows will only have 2 GB memory for game, 1 GB will be used by graphic card, 1 GB by wndows and other software, leaving 2 GB to game. This will not be enough, Skyrim with HD texture pack pushed past 2GB at least on old saves and some other mods.

So why have an 32 bit if you will need an 64 bit os to run it?

32-bit games should die already, the transition from 16-bit to 32-bit standard was like 10 times faster than this!

Yes, AM3+ and 1155 is limited to 32GB, 2011 who has 6 memory slots support up to 128 GB. Server board can support more up to multiple terabytes for multi cpu boards.

This is mostly sett by need, earlier 1155 and AM3 tend to only support 16GB

Main benefit of having lots of memory on an 64 bit system is that the game can simply keep content in memory in case its used again.

The new consoles only allow games to use up to 5GB of memory. The rest is reserved for the OS and other services. So no, Fallout 4 will not be able to use all 8 GB of memory on the new consoles. It might not even be able to use that much on PCs.

Just because the new consoles are 64-bit doesn't mean the games running on them have to be.

I've seen things here and there that suggest the 3.1GB problem is more related to DX9 than it is being 32 bit. Going to a 64 bit update of their engine is nice, but going to DX11 (weather tesellation has been reported to be a thing in FO4) will be of far greater importance.

32 bit O/S can only address 4gb of address space. Some is used by the O/S for various other purposes, that's why, even though you may have 4gb installed, the O/S only reports 3.2, or so, as 'available'. DX9 was originally developed on 32 bit systems, so, real possibility it doesn't have a clue about 64 bit stuff..... but, as you say, FO4 has already show that it is going to support dx11, so, that shouldn't be an issue either. Wonder if it will be backward compatible to dx9..... Or is DX11 available on vista as well?

Oh, I know the 4GB thing is how 32 bit works. I was addressing Skyrim's 3.1GB thing though. Which I swear I saw stuff that pinpointed it as a DX9 issue since other LAA flagged things have been documented to go as far as 3.8GB. Either way, DX11 will remove that problem.

I'm not positive, but I think Vista only has DX10. So there's every chance that we're looking at a minimum of Windows 7 64 bit here.
