Folding@Home V11.0

This concerns a distributed computing project (along the lines of SETI) from Stanford University in the US that deals with research in proteins, and hopes to result in ways of finding solutions to diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and others. I've had this installed on my system for a couple of months now. It runs completely unattended, has a small footprint and hasn't disturbed my gaming at all.

In addition, owners of Sony PS3's can participate in this program. Stanford's FAQ page for PS3 users is located http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-PS3.html. It seems like a pretty simple set up. :)

There's an Elder Scrolls team that was formed at PES, and since the original thread, here we have moved up several hundred positions in the team ranking...currently at 187 152. But things are slowing down a bit and we'd like to get some more folks signed up.

So if you're interested take a look here and help us out.

The thread on PES by Bycote that started all the action on this forum is http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/site_feedback/b49639/7665394/p1. This has a lot of good info on starting up your system to contribute.

Last thread is http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=974363.

My 9 GPUs and 8 SMPs don't hurt, either. :frog: I know, I'm a hardware [censored]. :nope:

I was wondering this a couple days ago...what all are you guys running? OS, clients, how often/how many hours?

Mine are all nVidia GPU2 in XP and Vista, plus I've lately switched from Windows SMP to running notfred's diskless SMP folding appliance in a virtual machine (sort of Linux-light for Dummies with a lot of patience). Sometimes I fire up a C2D laptop with a GT 120M that can also fold to do some beta testing for the bright boys and girls from Pande Group. When my output goes all weird for several days, like last weekend, that's what I'm usually doing. That one involved swapping video cards around in a couple boxes.

I was using it on my Mac OS X 10.6.1 (simple MacBook) but it seemed to always take too much (I never learned how to "partition" the used space...). But I recently obtained a PS3, so I might try running it on there (if I ever get the time to figure it out).

I was wondering this a couple days ago...what all are you guys running? OS, clients, how often/how many hours?

I run a GPU client that takes 100% of my Sapphire 4870 Toxic GPU plus 100% of one of my Phenom II X4 955 BE's cores and also three regular CPU console clients to make use of the remaining three cores. Setting up the SMP client was a pain in the ass plus it's meant to run on four cores, so since one of my CPU cores is taken by the GPU client I decided to just run three regular CPU clients.

I leave the WinXP over night to fold.

My hardware- 3 Q6600 and a Q9550, 9 nVidia GPU ranging from 8800 GTS 512 to GTX 260/216SP, 2 on each Q6600 and 3 on the Q9550. In it's current incarnation, the GPU2 client is more efficient (less CPU usage and higher points) on nVidia than ATi. Buy what you want and fold with what you have. Luckily, I like nVidia. Two boxes were built just to fold, the other 2 still spend 95%+ of their time folding- 1 is my media center and the other is my gamer.

We won't make any more moves for almost a month. We are due to break 150 before anyone else catches us. I think, once we do, we stay there. The forecast on EOC looks pretty good.

Milestones!

Welcome to the wonderful world of remote science.

@Veeno- check http://en.fah-addict.net/articles/articles-1-3+gpu-environment-variables.php article on tweaks to make the ATi cards use less CPU resources.

For everyone- each time they make a new core (the part that tells a client how to crunch the numbers), it has an effect on how your hardware is utilized. If you've been folding on an "old" installation, it might help to force a core update. Many of them change how they checkpoint or do other things differently. Cores should only be changed BETWEEN WUs. If you've been folding less than 3-4 months, you shouldn't need to do this.

Console- stop, add -oneunit flag, restart
Systray- click "Pause when finished" on menu
Service- I don't remember, for sure, but it can be a pain

When it stops after completing the WU, open your client folder, wherever you put it, and delete your cores or move them to a separate folder. These should all be named FAHCore_xx. Check your logs. At the very start of the WU, it will tell you which core it's using, and version (v1.xx). Once you move the cores out, you can remove -oneunit and restart the client. When it downloads a WU, it checks which core it needs, can't find one on your computer, and downloads the newest version.

Check your logs and points after updating. You may see a new version listed at the start of the logs, your PPD could change, and the CPU usage might change. When Stanford makes major changes to a core, they force an update, so everyone gets those. In between forced updates, they do make some changes that can make a difference in your clients.

If you don't like the way the new core runs, you can roll back to the one you removed- BETWEEN WUs.

Fold on! :goodjob:

I have one permanent (24/7) folder: a q6600 @ stock running the SMP client with ubuntu 8.04. I have a part-time/testing folder: e6420 @ stock running different configurations with Ubuntu 9.04, 32 and 64 bit depending.

We finally have a fix to the problem that drove Jaga away, folding on mismatched nVidia GPU's.

http://en.fah-addict.net/news/news-0-56+new-nvidia-core-11-v1-31-in-testing.php

http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=11972

These worked fine running a mix of GTX 260/216, 9800 GTX+, 8800 GTS 512, and 8800 GT. If you have a 2 slot mobo and an old card collecting dust, give this a try.

Welcome (back).

For others thinking about this, there really is "a client for everyone". Although most of the current push is towards better utilization of the newer high-end hardware, they continue to develope new projects for the standard CPU client. If you have an old single core computer that runs part of the day, you can probably finish the work on schedule.

Lowest I'd try to fold with:
Windows 98 and up
1GHz single core (P4 or Athlon XP)
512MB RAM
run 4-6 hours a day
better than a dial-up connection
configured for the best chance to catch long deadline work

We'll be spending another couple weeks at #150. No new members this week.

Which client are you running and how is it crashing? Can you throw the first 40 and last 40 lines from your logs up here for us to look at?

Oh, and knowing your system specs wouldn't hurt, either. :)

We, the steady-state folders of Team Elder Scrolls, are still sitting at #150. It will take over a week to move up, again. Luckily for our pride, the long-term trend is still onward and upward. Depending on the number of huge teams that appear, we may someday break into the top 100. Since we are "competing" against schools and hardware manufacturers, a bunch of gamers ain't doing too bad. :foodndrink:

Milestones

We have no new members, but the number of active members is staying fairly steady.

To slightly expand on the list in the OP, I can try to give help on running the following clients:
CPU, SMP, and nVidia GPU in XP and Vista
I also have a couple months experience with running notfred's SMP appliance in a virtual machine (125%+ over Win SMP on a dual, 200%+ on a quad).
Mod could update the OP, if they'd like.

The Stanford stats server being down for a day and a half put off our next position overtake by about 3 days. Without that, we would have hit #149 yesterday. No points were credited during the server downtime, but they were recorded by the work or collection servers. Work completed since Thursday afternoon/evening shows up in the stats, but anything submitted between early Wednesday and late Thursday will have to be entered by hand, and could take another week to show up. I'm still missing about 100K.

"The database server is currently serving too many connections. Please try again in a few minutes. "

Blah blah, what is my name there?
It's almost this nick if I remember but not exact.

Found it. Dremon_R

My first GPU unit was finished some hours ago, first one in some months. Running the GPU on 9600 gt and one cpu core on Phenom II x2 550 BE @ 3.6ghz. Good to know that my PSU is up for this, because it's a bit underscaled and I haven't ran any tests so far. Haven't actually tested the overclocks either, but 3.6 is so low that there should be no worries on that.

even more edits: the gpu core is slowing down my internet explorer. Don't think I've noticed any difference on mozilla.
and more: There is a difference on mozilla as well, I lowered the usage to 90% or so, well see how it works out.

For anyone else who's been away for a while, you can find the name you used from an old log.
[22:45:01] - Ask before connecting: No
[22:45:01] - User name: uncle_fuzzy (Team 52286)
[22:45:01] - User ID: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
[22:45:01] - Machine ID: 2

If you don't have a log, you can run the configuration for the client and read the same info there.

For those interested, Storage@Home is back up with v1.04. It gets replaced with v1.05 next week, so you might want to wait a few days. I'm back on and it's working fine.
