@Uncle_fuzzy: :blush2:

I think I messed it up there with numbers for each version, your figures sounds better, have no defense, just got started with the 460′s and tested with -adv, don′t remember exact numbers but it got hotter with 6811,roughly similar numbers, let it finish with -oneunit and removed -adv.We had a good period with -10 c and cooling works just fine then, but it gets warmer again here,so got eue′s and had to downclock a little, not too much though, besides those zotac 450 with fans only goes to 70%, besides that I think I remove the gt 220 between my gtx 460,makes cooling harder even with 2 x 120 mm and 2 x 80 mm additional fans there
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/4541/foldinghfmdrop450and460.jpg

I don′t have AC here, open up most of the windows, sounds like a no win situation there in regards to powerbills,of course it is generally cooler here.

edited: that overtake list, looked briefly at it,and there is some bigshots, and others that doesn′t beat us by much,so it looks nice there, you got the htpc etc going ? and here it is some leftovers, tried to order a mb for it but it wasn′t in stock (am2+ ddr2) ,and quite more expensive at others,so it is still uncertain.

The 6811 is the first WU that really pushes the Fermi cards. The 460 seems like the minimum for them, being loaded to the point of a 10C temp rise, but still getting good PPD. The 450 just gets buried by a 6811 and only makes 7K while getting hot. I'd like to see something besides the 6800 for the 450s, just to move from 9K back to 11K. I like 11K. It's a very nice number. :hubbahubba:

I hope to have the 980X folding in a couple weeks, or so. The water doesn't leak, but it still takes time to route all the connections around the tubing. I hope to fire it up by next weekend, then spend a few days working on OC and stress testing. I'm hoping this will change the threat list a bit. :D

The HTPC is at the bottom of the list.
1- Get the 980X running
2- Take the slowest Q6600 offline and combine all the spare parts to build the best system I can to sell to a co-worker. He'll get either a Q6600 or Q9550 in the only SLI mobo I have with 2x GTX260/216s and 4+GB DDR2. He'll be using it for 3D modeling and animation, so he needs better components than my TV does.
3- Take what's left to build the HTPC- probably a Q6600, W7 64 Home, 4+GB DDR2, install the SLI hack, 2x or 3x 8800GTS512 (SLI and PhysX).

If the 980X does what I hope it will, and I get a good HS for the 950 so I can crank the OC, I might even retire another Q6600 and just run 4 boxes. That would let me put 2x SLI 450s in the HTPC. :flamethrower:

The new build just got delayed. Putting in the PSU I discovered I needed a looooong molex extension to reach the aux PCIe power connection on the motherboard. I've got some coming in by Priority Mail, so it should only be a couple days. I might also have a problem fitting in the 4th gpu. I bought this mobo and case to run 4 of them, but it looks like the bottom one is only going to clear the PSU by a 1/4 inch and will interfere with the PSU cover the case comes with. :(

It's also one expansion slot short for the bottom 2 slot card, so I'd have to mod the case or exhaust inside. I planned on 4 in slots 1, 3, 5, and 7, but using 3 in 2, 4, and 6 will give better separation and cooling. The 460s have a shrouded cooler, but the 450s have an open cooler, so maybe I'll have to go that way. Case air flow makes a bigger difference with an open cooler, so clearance shouldn't be as big a deal. Don't mind me, I'm just rambling now. :)

Found a note from back when I ran 6811, 10 degres increase sounds about right with 460, 450 as you say gets buried by them, have removed -adv on all my fermis now, uhm wasn′t it 12-13 or 14k with the 9xx-wu′s ? depending on which cards and oc, was fun though :)

980X and water, man, you′re really going for it,envious, the best I have is a 1090T @ 3740,moderate but very stable at that.
The HTPC is at the bottom of the list.

Your co-worker will get good use of that, and the rest sounds good, way overkill for a HTPC but that is a bit of the fun :D

My self is done with the gpu side, regret zotac 450,should go for evga sc 450 all over, and very happy with my gigabyte gs gtx 460,it has two fans, always a good thing.Saving houndreds of W with replacing gts and gtx 2xx with 4xx,and more livable without 6811 that is ;)
With that I was hoping to put leftovers to a 4th pc,and had everything besides mb and case for it,if I managed to get atx 20->24 and 4->8 pin converters for an old 450 w psu of mine,I get the 20->24 pin but not the 4 to 8 adapter (cable),so I get a new psu as well, and they wasn′t sure when they get the mb,if so the thought was to run amd 630+ 2 green gt 9800 and a deep green gts 250,and eventually a 4th card, estimate on a good day 20+ k and draw very little power, all of them only draw from pci-e.If the mb fails it has to wait for me to go ddr-3 after x-mas.

Btw sounds like a bump in the road there with crowded case and molex and what not, no fun. There is rumours abot one slot 4xx coming, dunno about that, that leaves some versions of gt 430 as single afaik ? but 3 is still good though.

So I decided to leave my comp folding over Thanksgiving break seeing how I always have it running all the time anyway and haven't had problems, I check my stats every day and then notice my stats take a hit so I thought i'd just VCN into my computer and find out what's the deal. Turns out I had my home IP blocked from my computer at school so I couldn't figure out what the deal is so I was like whatever, I can't do much about it anyway. I come back and there's this terrible noise coming from my computer. Turns out the fan for my cpu fell out of it's socket and was running against the heatsink. So I rip apart another fan and find one of those washer thingys that hold the fan in, pop it into my gpu fan and started folding again.

I got the cables I was waiting for, but I only have a one day weekend. I'd like to get power on it today, torture test it during the week, and have it folding next weekend, but I might not have the time. Since this is my most expensive build, and the first attempt at water cooling, it has to be the most careful, and hopefully prettiest, build. I'll post a picture when I'm done.

We slipped back to #121. We'll move up one later today, and then have a steady climb until the middle of January before the next team catches us.

Looks and sounds like the fan bearings on my Radeon 5870 broke. The fan is making loud noises and sounds like it's almost getting stuck. I turned the computer off while trying to figure out should I buy a new graphics card, or just a 3rd party gpu cooling solution, because I'm afraid to run the computer like that.. Well, it lasted a year, stayed on almost 24/7 running F@H and lately Boinc.

to bad, had/ have a fan that got something similar on a gtx 260 of mine, looked through my stuff after any fan that could fit,and found one with molex connector which I managed to fit onto the card, wasn′t perfect, not even close to the original, busted fan,but it worked until I got replacement.Third party can work, but they cost a bit so it is a call to make there, that or new card,I got new card/s my self,
nice with an excuse to get new gear anyway ;)

A new cooling solution would cost about 60 euros, but it takes so much space that the sound card wouldn't fit anymore. The motherboard only has one compatible PCI-e slot for the sound card. If I put anything into the other PCI-e x16, the motherboard would drop the graphics card bandwidth to x8 too. Currently there are two x1 slots between the two long x16 slots. The sound card is in the other one. There is a third x1 slot on the other side of the graphics card, but that one is blocked by one of the heatsinks on the motherboard. Man, who designs the motherboards like this. :P

Oh well, I guess I'll buy the cooler, take out the sound card and then give the system to dad who's still struggling with an Athlon 900. I can still sneak in a Folding@Home client in there, and he would be none the wiser, and only complaining about the electricity bill. At least I'll have a reason to quickly buy a new monster to put the old sound card in..

They don't make them like they used to...

Your dad will be happy at least, family is important so that isn′t a big loss, and you can sneak in a folding client in there too even better.
60 euros, well not too cheap, but aint that expensive either, out on the loop ati wise nowadays, only know that I needed two gtx 460 to get oblivion running (almost) smooth.
If you ′re wery comfortable in modding motherboards those pci-e x1 is moddable,to fit lower ends gpu′s like gt 430,soundcards and the likes, you need to "melt/remove" that plastic in the front to make room for pci-e cards, but yours fit in those pci-e x1 ? my x-fi is ordinary pci,got crowded case my self.True they don′t make them like they used to,still have found memories of some abit mb,man that was a good one :D

Well, then you get new pc with 980x and beat me ? too expensive for me atm,and you have 3th place in reach, feeled a bit bad by passing you recently, was all those fermis that actually works for F@H unlike ati/amd :wavey:

For folding, that wouldn't hurt at all. Even x8 is more bandwidth than folding needs right now. For gaming, that's another matter. Temporary cooling could be removing the side panel from the case and pointing a desk fan at the gpu. You still have the heatsink in place, you just need to move air across it. If it's a shrouded cooler, you'd have to remove the shroud, but you'll need to do that for an aftermarket cooler anyway.

Now that I'm working the 980X into the current folding mix, I'm finally going to build a semi-dedicated gaming box with the "spare parts" as I shut down 2 older boxes. I still have to put one together to sell to a friend, but I think I'll end up with a Q6600, P45 mobo hacked for SLI, 2x 450GTS in SLI, and I think I can fit in an 8800 GTS 512 for PhysX. That box is still folding, so I haven't opened it up recently. I also have to fit in a TV tuner card, so I'm not sure about a PhysX card. Luckily I have cores to spare, so I can always put it on the cpu.

I needed two gtx 460 to get oblivion running (almost) smooth.

How heavily do you have that thing modded? All I had to do to play Oblivion at med/high when it first came out was replace my FX5500 with a 6800GT, but I play vanilla.

Good thing I looked at another shop that had it selling for 15 euros cheaper. I got the last unit too. I'll have to go and get it tomorrow because the shop was already closed when I ordered it online. My sound card fits into a PCI-e x1 slot.

The 5870 is plenty of a card. I would have to get at least a 5970 or nVidia's 480 or 580 now, to make it an upgrade, and the latter costs quite a lot already, not to mention the CPU as I was already running Core i7-860. 920 is about the same, and 950 costs almost twice than that. Availability of these 580's is still very low here, and I think AMD's latest 6870 is slower than this 5870 I have. AMD/ATI is releasing the upgrade, 6970 in about a week though. They've been playing with the naming. I guess I won't upgrade until spring though, and will hang on to this thing until I can upgrade. Too bad for the sound card for not having a home, but I want to keep it..

I've been running 3DMark's at some ATI/nVidia competition lately and naturally the fan broke at the end of the 3DMark05 demo (not benchmarking) after I had already defaulted the clocks and was just enjoying the show. Then I start hearing loud noises during the credits part of the demo... ohh, figures. For other people in the contest, it looks like that simply upgrading to the 980X and using the same 5870 would give about a 25 percent boost in benchmark scores compared to my records.

well, disabled RAEWD,it was a tad much combined with the rest, other than that 4096 hgec, qtp, some lod (teslodgen) etc,all natural+lights and a bunch of mods, several with a lot of scripts attached.
have 30 fps outside, but having it close to max,or max, have OSR at max fps at 36, using 72 on the monitor, only 1280x1024 btw. Low on ram,3 gb on xp 32.But @3.74 now on my 940.It works with much better fps with qtp 2 though, but had to test my new cards :D

good for you, and didn′t knew those fitted in pci-ex1,good to know.About nvidia,480/580 comes at premium prices, and use a lot of power, sounds like it is a good card you got already.

My self is offline for around 7h more on my main, second part in ghosting my raptors for raid, should done it ages ago, anyway I did the first yesterday, and then a few hours to put it in again, meaning no fold on that one at all until tomorrow or so,usually manage to fold at least half a day on it when I play new stuff on oblivion or some such, which I do now :)

We moved back to #120 this week, one more spot expected in 3 days, then 2 more before the end of the year. The 5 teams on the EOC Threat list will catch us in from 1.9 months to 1.6 years, while those on our attack list will fall to our might in between 3 .4 days and 1 month. We're in a good position to continue climbing the list.

I got the new cooler installed finally after a few hours of hair pulling and the card seems to be doing alright. It's running about 20-25 degrees cooler than before under a full load and is quiet too. Fan speed at 27% and GPU temp at 63C, load 99%. This thing has 3 fans, so even if one of them failed, I think I should still be safe with two left running. :)

it is ati only that fan you got ? some of them are aparently for both lairs, was for me even if I manage with additional fans at the sides, but could be nice to know about alternatives :)
Nice that you got it sorted.

you should be able to by getting the gpu-2 client and set it up in separate folder, eventually using -forcegpu nvidia_g80 -gpu 0 or -gpu 1,which ever cuda-z report your 9600 gt as (card 0 or 1).
cuda-z is afaik the surest thing as cuda goes, not always msi afterburner/evga precision or riva tuner report it correctly.Haven′t got riva tuner to work with fermis btw so it is the other two for fermis,at least for me.
Just in case the similar switch for gtx 460 is -forcegpu nvidia_fermi -gpu 0 or -gpu 1, assuming two cards here.
And it is probably best to use fahcore 15 for the 460,and fahcore 11 aka gpu-2 client for that 9600,in separate folders and different id′s,even if g80-cards can use gpu-3 it is less effective through my own shortlived experience.
-hope I made sense, didn′t know if some info already was known either.

edited for clearity.

This very cooler was specifically made for the 5870. However, they came up with a newer model that is unified, but you need to separately buy some package that includes RAM, voltage regulator heatsink and a mounting plate. Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme. There are different models with 1 to 3 fans but thanks to the package they should be compatible with anything from nvidia 9800GTX to 480, or ATI 3850 to 6870 up to 250Watts of cooling power. Wait a few weeks and they'll probably come up with a package for the 580 too, and they do have a slightly more powerful version of the whole cooler for Radeon 5970.

Zalman also has a very extensive set of coolers for both nVidia and ATI. I'd say there is a 3rd party cooler for all the common graphics cards, even the old ones.

However, as far as I know, all the coolers leave the graphics card kinda open. You won't have the protective cover of the standard shroud and the one I got (roughly 600 grams) is only held up by four tiny screws... So far so good though.

Dealextreme or some such you bought it at ? checked the two shops I usually turn to,and they don′t have all of it,one had a passive arctic cooling accelero, and additional sets, but they both have several of zalman.
Looks like it is several considerations to make there, big coolers and tiny screws, uhm seems a tad unsufficient in the long run.
Was mainly a pair of zotac 450 I got that has less than optimal cooling as it is,running at 70% regardless, not that good either, and eventually to fix the broken fan on gtx 260 even if those 260 draws more power and gives "Science" below the 450′s,or similar, 8k on good days.
But thanks for a informative post :goodjob:

And it is probably best to use fahcore 15 for the 460,and fahcore 11 aka gpu-2 client for that 9600,in separate folders and different id′s,even if g80-cards can do fahcore 15 it is less effective.
-hope I made sense, didn′t know if some info already was known either.

There seems to be some problems with the fermi client and mixed gpus, I'll wait until that works and get back to it. Tried for a while to get it working but no luck, not with either core for the 9600 gt.

The 460 alone is making 9k+ ppd, so that's alright too ;)

Yes, that′s more than ok :)

If you give it another go it is probably an idea to say what client and windows you are using,my self got it working in xp32,driver 260.99 and consolle client
(anything outside xp I wouldn′t know,I bet there is others on the team that do)

edit: used almost entirely the gpu2-client with fahcore 11 on my 9800,gt 220,gts 250 or gtx 260,so one use what is familiar I guess, can be unclear at times when writing to fast.

I tried both of those options, I may try troubleshooting it later to see if something is off.

Related thread on the forums http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=16985 he gets 2x 460 working, but can't get his 260 to work at the same time. I'll at least check on that thread once in a while to see if he comes up with something.

aint that many good threads around for mixing generations of cards, pantherX probably has one of the best, looks ok to me.

1:the biggest obstacle for me was the order of the cards, took a while to get that sorted before I remembered to use cuda-z,since what I was "sure" it was,and msi afterburner reported them as,was wrong.Looks like it is a common thing among folders, afaik that cuda-z is what matters when it comes to get the facts about how cuda see things, not gpu-z,msi aftrburner, evga precision or your own head,cuda-z is the thing.

2:Don′t get that physX dedicated or not,it didn′t make any difference apparently for me which ever I had the gt 220 as,even if I usually had it as physX-card,got better results from my two gtx 460 as well with that, compared to now with the gt 220 removed, loose a k or so compared, dunno why.

3: had to confess, using the consolle clients only nowadays,I had an existing setup of gpu-2 with fahcore 11,which I just had to change a few settings in the shortcuts target that looked like this then, exact copy: the part in " is the path to the exe,the rest after - is switches for the shortcut, vital parts is forcegpu and -gpu 1.
"D:\foldinger xp\jaxawier-tes\tes-fah-gtx260-gpu0-id-10\tes-gtx260-gpu0-id-10.exe" -forcegpu nvidia_g80 -gpu 1 -verbosity 9 -forceasm

4: so obviosly I had one gtx 460 as -gpu 0, gt 220 as -gpu 1,and the second 460 as -gpu -2,which wasn′t at all what I thought it would be.

5:lastly it helped to get a clear picture of what was running what to differentiate clients so the fermis used fahcore 15,and gt 220 used fahcore 11.
things like gpu load to check everything running ok= in the 90% since some cards of mine works at reduced load because minor temperature issues.
If it aint in the 90′s something is fishy.

6: on the other hand,a lot of hassle for 3k I read somewhere 9600 gt contribute to the science,or 2-2.5 k gt 220 make, wasn′t worth added heat, noise and hassle imho.
