Folding@Home V12.0

had/have some issues with my i7,so much so it did some wcg work for a little while :whistling:
anyway have a weird issue with my p7p55D-board (i7-870) that have 3 pcie-ports,all of the sudden only the bottom slot works as expected= port 2,port 0 and 1 regardless of which card I put in there they get above 105C and the whole thing usually shuts down then, also tried to switch cards in port 2 (the bottom one) and all works there, two versions of gts 250,gtx 260.
only card that survive at port 0 and 1 is a gt 220 which I use as physx and occasional folding, only gives 2-2.5 K anyway.
I don′t get it,so guess that is one card folding eventually, only loose a K or so on smp as it seems with 6900 so far,so it is aroundish 4k added, whished I could get the overheating solved though,at least getting two gpu′s up and running :brokencomputer:

Well I might start folding again once I get some more ram. I have so much stuff I have running all the time between fah, a minecraft server, frapsing league of legends games, compressing lol games I haven't had much time to fold much. Also my gtx 460 has this whine that annoys the hell out of my roommate so I haven't been using the GPU client. Is there any way to define 5 cores to fah and 1 to my mc server? Like make sure they don't end up on the same core? The mc server kinda svcks and even with fah it freaks out and lags a lot.

I've never messed with setting affinity, either through Windows or with a separate program. The quickest way to leave room for the server is to run either 4 or 5 CPU clients, or SMP using the -smp 4 or -smp 5 flag and set all the clients to NOT lock cpu affinity through configuration. This limits how much cpu the SMP client may use, but lets the OS decide how to float the load across all cores.

I did that with my i7's. One way to fix lag or conflicts over resources is to use -smp (n-1), n = number of cores. I ran -smp 7 on the 930 and 950 to leave room for a pair of gpus, and -smp 10 on the 980X because it has 4x GTS450's.

It doesn't look like it has a lot of directions, but I have seen other folders mention this:

http://edgemeal.110mb.com/SetAffinity/index.htm

******************************************

Now for the big news- V7 has been released to open beta. It is a single interface to control multiple folding processes on a single computer. For those who know what they're doing, it also allows monitoring other machines across a network. I've been running console clients since I started and find it a bit limited, but for those running systray it should be a dream. On a clean install it takes about 3 minutes to set up the "FAHClient" and multiple "slots" and be up and folding.

http://folding.typepad.com/news/2011/03/client-version-7-now-in-open-beta.html
http://foldingforum.org/viewforum.php?f=67

A lot of terminology has changed, so do some reading before you decide to change over. One of the big points for this is better use of the ATi cards.

Sorry if this is a stupid question but does this require a high speed Internet connection?

I just got a 5830 to replace my old card and apparently it supports this and I think it's a great idea only issue is if requires high speed since I'm still on a pitiful dialup connection.

Folding only connects to the Internet to download and upload work. It doesn't maintain a constant connection. The packet size for uploading from GPU or CPU clients will run up to about 3MB every few hours (GPU) or few days (CPU). The SMP client is over 10MB every 12-18 hours, and the bigadv (8 cores +) is over 100MB.

With a dialup, I'd say give it a try and see what the upload times look like. The easiest way to start would be to use the new https://fah-web.stanford.edu/projects/FAHClient/wiki/BetaRelease (pick your OS).

Accept all the default settings when installing until you get the the type of hardware you want to use (UNI, GPU, SMP). Default for a system with a multi-core cpu is SMP. Choose GPU from the drop down list. OK out and it will install, find your GPU, figure out what it needs to run, download the right core and work unit, and start folding. Once it starts, you can click Hide and it will drop down to sit in the System Tray.

Once it's run for a while, it shows the ETA for completing the work, so you can figure out how often it will use your dialup connection. It will show more information about the work if you go to the upper right corner and change from Novice to Expert. If you click the "Finish" button, it will complete the work and upload it, but not download new work. Checking the Log tab you'll be able to see how long it took to upload. If you can live with the time involved, click the run button and it will get new work and start folding.

If you want to do heavy gaming, it might be better to click pause before starting. Just remember to click run when you're done.

I'm not worries about upload and download times really just wanted to know if it could be done. Once I get a PSU to fix my PC I'll start then, thanks for the info.

This concerns a distributed computing project (along the lines of SETI) from Stanford University in the US that deals with research in proteins, and hopes to result in ways of finding solutions to diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and others. I've had this installed on my system for a couple of months now. It runs completely unattended, has a small footprint and hasn't disturbed my gaming at all.

In addition, owners of Sony PS3's can participate in this program. Stanford's FAQ page for PS3 users is located http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-PS3.html. It seems like a pretty simple set up. :)

There's an Elder Scrolls team that was formed at PES, and since the original thread, here we have moved up several hundred positions in the team ranking...currently at 187 152. But things are slowing down a bit and we'd like to get some more folks signed up.

So if you're interested take a look here and help us out.

The thread on PES by Bycote that started all the action on this forum is http://forumplanet.gamespy.com/site_feedback/b49639/7665394/p1. This has a lot of good info on starting up your system to contribute.

Additional i7's are always welcome. :) I have a 930, 950, and 980X, all running around 3.8GHz and folding like mad, and a new laptop (2630QM) I haven't folded on, yet. :D

An i7 can do about 10K points per day running the SMP client, or close to 40K running the big advanced work units (requires 8+ cores, including HT, and take about 2 days to complete for 80K points).

Your 570's can do over 10K per day, each. I run OC'd 450's and 460's getting from 9-11K each.

Your lappy could add another 20K to the total.

Give it a shot. Don't forget to enter team #52286 during the configuration process. :goodjob:

Just post here if you want to try it and have any questions. :cookie:

The team ID is 52286. This is needed for the points to come to us. They will always go to you, even with no team selected.

The passkey comes from Stanford: http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-passkey . The passkey is not yet required for all folding, but probably will be in the future. It is required for getting the Quick Return Bonus (QRB) when running SMP, regular or bigadv.

Any fairly recent nVidia GPU will finish a Work Unit (WU) in between 2 and 6 hours for 4000-15000 points per day (PPD). Only the newest ATi come close to that. There has been a longstanding problem with running folding code on ATi because of the way the GPU processes the code. nVidia CUDA does it much better. V7 is the start of moving to OpenMM and letting the ATi boards catch up.

Welcome aboard! :icecream:

sorry i took awhile to get back......exams and stuff and fire and sword were just released. :) it says on the bottom of the installer that it will automatically pick the best option. my question is that it picked SMP im assuming because of my totally awesome i7 processor. however i was under the impression that you got more done with an nvidia GPU. i have a 285 which while not top of the line isnt that old. should i pick GPU mode instead or stick with the SMP mode?

edit: forgot im using squeekers as my folding name......not sure if your using that or the forum nicknames.

Every piece of hardware capable of folding has it's own strengths, weaknesses, and projects.Folding was originally designed to make use of SPARE cycles on your computer, so you need to look at how you use it and decide what you can most easily spare. I'm the odd ball who actually built more systems just to fold, so I'm not a good example.

Uniprocessor- slowest, but most forgiving if you use your computer a lot for other things. It has the longest deadlines- some as long as 2 months.
GPU- quickest turnaround, usually can do several a day, can really cause problems if you try to do heavy video programs (games) while folding
SMP- needs uninterupted full access to the cpu 24/7 to really pay off, V7 doesn't like add numbers, so you can use even numbers from 2 to 8 for SMP

V7 looks for the heaviest piece of hardware you have, which, with an i7, means the cpu. Since it sees 4 or 8 cores (HT on?), it says SMP. You can choose GPU instead, and it will set up the GPU. If you decide to add CPU or SMP later, depending on how much you use the computer and if you want to leave it on 24/7, they are pretty easy to add. I installed GPU first on mine, because it will find, set up, and run multiple cards in one step. If I did SMP first, I'd have to add the GPUs one at a time later.

You would actually get more points from running the SMP. I moved to all 400-series last year, but my GTX 260/216s got 5-7K PPD. An i7 running SMP on just 6 cores will get about 8K+, leaving 2 cores and the GPU for you to use for games. You could also run bigadv (huge SMP projects) using all 8 cores for 25-40K PPD (70-80K every 2-3 days), depending on OC. I have 3 i7 desktops running bigadv since I built them, and I'm 2 days into one on my new laptop (i7 2630QM).

My Sunday posts are taken from the stat sites and use whatever name you enter in the folding client. For most of us, that's the same, or similar to, the forum name we use. Folding doesn't like spaces, so mine just adds an underscore.

edit: restarted and started the client again and it set itself to uniprocessor and now its working. Wonder why it didn't work with GPU..
