Followers: Adventure buddies

Post » Mon Oct 04, 2010 7:49 pm

So whats your thoughts of having followers? You know, those lil NPC helpers that you deck out in cool adventure gear and go goblin hunting with?

I personaly would like something similar to FONV were you can have multiple followers, but would like to have more than just three. (I always wanted to ride around with all nine of the Knights of the Nine in Oblivion without having to have a mod)

And now that I think about it, being able to have evolving relationships with followers would be interesting, too. The more you adventure with them, the more backstory you get + the better they fight with you.

So....thoughts?

I prefer to go it alone because the other person will probably get in the way or get killed by a Trap similar to the Alyeid Swinging Blades.

Mmm, I think I prefer mods for this sort of thing. Then again, Fallout New Vegas did it alright.

I want the scripting support for followers, but I'll wait for talented modders like Kateri, Princess_Stomper, and Laura for decent companions. :)

Couldn't answer.

I'd take followers as long as they know enough to stay the heck away from me in combat :whoops: , or know that a weak civie with a rusty dagger should sit some battles out! :stupid: :dead:

edit: woohoo! I used some newish smilies!

We have mods for this. With the new scripting features of Fallout, they are quite easy to do.

Followers never quite work out for me

They always end up in my way and they always end up dying (and fairly easily too)

If they include them it's probably fun for some people but I don't typically take followers

I would not however, say take them out because there are some people who do like them and do use them.

I'm kind of split on this one. The occational follower in Oblivion was reduntant when they couldn't get through traps, However, followers in NV are like pack mules that can mildly defend themselves. I like having ai to come along and hold my stuff, no dought about that. I'd say put a few in, give them a nice backstory and a few quests, but other than that don't go overboard. Fighting an army solo with nothing more than your sword, shield, armor, and spells is always fun.

No I only solo followers always get in the way and sometimes backstab me so no.
EDIT: you should change the poll option "No, Im a one person wolf pack." to "No. Im a lone wolf."
It just sounds better.

With an improved AI, companions might actually be more useful than just companionship for once.

Really should be trying to make Elder Scrolls and Fallout LESS alike.

Perhaps maybe mercenaries or bodygaurds you can just hire for a wage. The whole companions with unique personalities is sort of a fallout thing.

If they work well and follow orders I would like a companion or two.

I would very much enjoy nameless, respawning mercinaries that could be hired from a location inside at least one of the major cities, although as many people said, friendly fire will be an issue if we can't turn it off.

If they're anything like Farwil Indarys from Oblivion, then...no. Otherwise, yes. :)

Eh, you got a point in it being a fallout thing. But it still would be nice to get some people from a guild you are in/lead to come with you. Maybe they'd come with you for a cut of the reward? There'd be incentive to go alone, but if you need help you'd have that option.

Only instead of having to be two feet away from them to tell them anything, you can give them commands from a distance.

Yes I most certainly do want companions.

It would be great to have some special companions that have some sort of story and relationship with the character (other than just 'travel companion'). And also have some random fighters/rangers/mages we could hire to travel with.

And now that I think about it, being able to have evolving relationships with followers would be interesting, too. The more you adventure with them, the more backstory you get + the better they fight with you.

+1 Yes I liked the way they did it in FNV. It would be even better once improved upon in an Elder Scrolls world.

We have mods for this. With the new scripting features of Fallout, they are quite easy to do.

We also have mods for weapons. Does that mean they shouldn't put weapons in the game?

We shouldn't have to use mods to get something like companions in a big game like this.

I want the choice to have em or not have them but I want them weak and actually ineffectual to any real fighting more as a distraction while I do the real fighting as they fall in heaps while I kill all the screws with their backs to me or sneak past while my minions fall and I want them easily replaceable as hired guards, slaves, mine workers, laborers, servants, and I want to be able to dress them as I wish, and arm them as I wish

I was always against having followers/companions, until I played FONV - that game got it nearly right. With improved AI I could see it working better. One of the things I dislike about games is those babysitting quests where you're forced to take someone else along or escort them somewhere and they get in the way and die, but optional companions with decent AI would be a good thing.

no no no to special companions or anything even remotely fallout like in a companion, never would I want a truly effective companion, this is not fallout or dragons age or mass effect, I want them for little more then eye candy period and never as a must have .

I like having followers in the Fallout and Mass Effect games, but in Oblivion I just feel like they get in my way and they aren't very useful.
