This question has a couple of different parts.

Lydia was my follower. I then made her my steward at my Lakeview property. Here is what I am trying to clarify:

1) When she is not my follower she is only wearing underwear. Is this because I took some piece of her personal equipment from her? Is there a way to find out what her original equipment was and give it back? If I make her my follower again she will switch back into the gear she has in her inventory that was provided by me. If I dismiss her she goes back to underwear.

2) It seems that since I made Lydia my steward there is no way to remove this role from her. If I tell her to follow me she doesn't do any steward duties but I also cannot hire any other steward. If I dismiss her she immediately goes back to being my steward. Can she carry out both duties at the same time or is there a way to make her my follower while getting someone else to be steward?

I am playing on the PS3 with all patches and DLC.

1. If you removed her steel armor then it's possible she reverted to her "original" clothes which in this case aren't there so she's naked.

-I don't know if giving her another set of Steel would help.

-Yes, just walk out a door and she should have the armor you provided.

-I don't know if dismissal will make her naked again or not.

2. I don't know..

Lydia's default gear is Steel - steel armor, steel Nordic gauntlets and steel boots. She carries a steel sword and shield and a hunting bow. Follower default equipment is supposed to be "hidden" though, which means it can't be taken from her. It sounds like you have some kind of bug or glitch. Try taking away the stuff you gave her before dismissing her as a follower, and see if she equips her default armor and weapon set as steward then.

Once someone becomes steward it's a job for life. The only way you can get another steward is for Lydia to die.

I suppose you have pickpocketed the gear from her, or (if you're married to her) has used her shop to buy it from her. Try to remove ALL her default apparel this way, then she should produce another set.

I don't think I pickpocketed from her. I believe that what I did when she became my follower was give her some new gear, which she put on, and then take whatever she had and sold it, though if their default gear is supposed to be untakeable I don't know why she isn't just putting it back on. I'll try taking everything I gave her and see what happened, though I think I already tried this and it didn't make a difference. It looks like I'm stuck with her as my steward, though, so I'll have to find someone else to be my pack mule.

Addendum: I forgot to mention that when she becomes steward she is carrying a shield and wearing some sort of gauntlets. I'm not sure if she has boots on or not. She looks very interesting standing there in her underwear and shield.

if she has any peices of armour still on, Ive her a better peice of that armour and then dismiss her. pickpocket her stuff and then the next time you ask her to follow you take your stuff back and dismiss her again. leave the cell and enter again and she will have her stuff back.

No boots: just the gauntlets and shield. Here's what I did: I hired her again, gave her some ebony gauntlets, which are better, like you recommended, and dismissed her. I pickpocketed her and took the ebony gauntlets and a steel shield. The steel shield didn't show in my inventory after pickpocketing. I hired her again but couldn't take anything from her since she didn't have anything. So I dismissed her again and she's now my underwear steward, with her gauntlets and shield. I guess I could kill her and hire a new steward but that's not really my style. I just want her to look somewhat dignified as she's going about my business!

give her the ebony gauntlets but steal her steel gauntlets from her.

No steel gauntlets show in her inventory. The only items that she has are the ebony gauntlets and a steel shield.

are you pickpocketing or trading. you have to pickpocket them.

Pickpocket. Those are the only 2 items in her inventory. The ebony gauntlets are in regular text but the steel shield is in red.

take the sheild.

I did. I took both items and the results were the same. I think I'm stuck with it like this.

If she has no Items at all, fast travel away and then back.
