Food: AKA "What? Is that it?"

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 2:48 am

Am I missing something? Because food seems kind of pointless as a healing device.

Uncooked: Restore 2 points of health.
Cooked: Restore 5 points of health.

Um.... What? So unless I'm mistaken, you need to carry your weight limit in food just to replenish your health-bar, like once.

I know that alchemy is for healing potions, but what's the point of giving us cooking, if the food just to going to be a miserable, and unusable option?

The more complex recipes have better results.

Cooking certainly isn't comparable to alchemy, even when just considering health and stamina restoration. But then it's also much cheaper and has no associated skill. Some of the regeneration effects are pretty nice, and if you don't pursue alchemy they are quite useful.

I was cooking all the time until I realised I could use my salt pile for a better purpose, alchemy.

Yeah, the cooking bonuses should be better. And there should be a "chef school" faction ... The bonuses from cooking should be unique also. Well, you can either eat one ultimate healing potion or 500 carrots, it is your choise.

I have a friend who had to go to the hospital because he had an intestinal backup from eating so many carrots. Seriously.

I think cooking is more useful for roleplaying purposes.

Hopefully we will have, or someone will create a "hardcoe" type mode when possible :) that'll make things a bit more interesting with food and new Recipes.

One of these days I'm going to RP a character who only eats...with no alchemy or health regen. And a lot of folks complain that the game is too easy? You can make it what you will.

I got a paper cut last week and instead of getting a bandaid I ate a carrot.

My finger is now infected.

Food should have some legit uses:

-Cure a "Hunger" Debuff
-Add more to the Well-Rested Buff
-A longer, more considerable Healing over time buff.

Elsweyr Fondue (Increases Magicka regeneration by 25% and increases maximum Magicka by 100 for 720 seconds.) isn't too bad if you're a mage. Venison Stew (Restores 15 Stamina and restores 1 Health per second and 1 Stamina per second for 720 seconds.) isn't bad overall. It's the healing over time versus burst thing. If you've got no alchemy or magic, then that food stuff could come in handy.

Do the food effects stack? If so, I could see carrying around a bunch of Venison Stew, especially since the ingredients for that are probably easier to come to by than some Increased Health Regeneration potion.

I'm sure it'll provide a good set of elements to work with if anyone decides to make a food requirements mod in the vien of NewVegas hardcoe mode.

As things stand, yeah, it's pretty substandard compared to a bottle of healing juice, but if all you can find after a fight is a side of venison and a bandits cook fire, it's better than nothing.

Food has to be one of my biggest gripes about the game.

Oh look... I am under 10% health and that Draugr is swinging his sword at me!

Pause time - Consume 100 carrots - fully healed - unpause time.... get hit with sword...

Aha!! you didn't kill me yet!

Food should ONLY be a very slow regeneration over time at MOST. In fact, not eating should bring penalties that keeping fed will relieve.

It would be cool if food would restore x health per second or likewise, but 1 health per second is so low that if the situation is so that my char is in dire need of health restoration, 1 per second isn't nearly enough, even against a mudcrab. If it was just a little more, it could be useful.

Cooking in this game is more for the Role that one plays than for the game. It's just nice to have something tangible to take away from the process.

Kind of like chopping wood or grinding grain, you do it for reasons that have little to do with game play and mostly to do with the role of your character.

I guess if you're losing a fight with an Ice Troll and are almost out of health, you can chow down about 100 carrots before it's next slash.

Similar to unmodded Fallout 3, BTW.

But a bit worse here because your health regenerates. So need need for food outside of a battle. And role-playing eating a six course dinner in the middle of a nasty fight is tough.

And since food cannot be used for Alchemy and can't be sold for much, it seems it's only purpose is decoration and role-playing.

According to the Official Game Guide there are maybe two recipes that give you a minor benefit for a couple of minutes or so, but that's about it.

I made a non-magic warrior orc that uses food as a main way to heal.

The Stews are neat, but not amazing.

Luckily my warrior orc barely ever takes any damage.

I have some 50 Apple Cabbage Stews in my inventory. I find I lose stamina like crazy and that's the only thing that replaces it fairly quickly.

For what it's worth, a couple of the food ingredients can also be used for alchemy. I know wheat can be, off the top of my head. Can't think of any others.
