Football Thread - World Cup Special II

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:38 am

That was a fun match to watch. And the man who scored for the US is a Texan to make it even better for me.

On the subject of American sports, the leagues have done quite a bit to ruin their respective sports. Plus, for the most part, sports fans here are just horrible. Aside from a small group of diehards, there's no passion and too much ignorance. But, that's a different subject and really doesn't mean much to this topic.

No matter how hard I try I just can't get into ice hockey, but not because it's too slow paced but because 90% of the time I have absolutely no idea where the [censored]in' puck is!!! I'm not trying to offend here, I suppose you just have to get used to... I don't know actually, either guessing where the puck is or be at peace with not knowing where it is.

Throw some boards along the side of the field and we would have a sport. No more out of bounds, no more players standing around because they know they can't beat the ball to the line, no more stopping the play every minute. Without the ball going out players would be battling for the ball alot more.

So how many games in a round in the World Cup?

No, then we would have chaos. Also you apparently can't even conceive how high a ball can fly after you hit it with your leg, so if you really don't want the ball to go out of bounds despite the boards the boards would have to go pretty damn high, which if you want the crowd around the field to be able to see what's going on inside the field would have to be a pretty unstable construction.

So how many games in a round in the World Cup?

There are 8 groups of 4 and each team plays each other (6 games in each group), then it's the knockout stage. Last 16, 1/4 finals, semi's, final.

Unstable constructions can make any sport more interesting.

No more ice hockey in a football thread, that's why the rest of the world sneers at US football fans.

We all do, it helps us forget how you could take over the sport if you ever understood it. Plus we still remember 1950!! :)

Excuse my noobnes, what is the point of staying at a tie and not having a sudden death round style thing until a winner is declared?

The first three matches are a round robin little league of four teams, then it goes to sudden death for the top 2 teams from each group. Sorts out the men from the guys wearing shorts first. Once they get to sudden death you'll have extra time then the dreaded penalties.

It's a group based round. The top 2 from each group go through. Each team plays 3 games against the other teams in the group.

Because it's still the group stage.

I've played soccer like that. Its fun. But the ball still goes out of bounds. Still, very quick pace that way.
