Football Thread - World Cup Special IV

Post » Wed Dec 30, 2009 10:14 pm

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AMERICAN-STYLED FOOTBALL

Just a friendly reminder - we're not interested in having discussions about what the game "should" be called, be it "soccer" or "football" or whatever, so please don't bring that kind of nonsensical arguments into here. We've gone though 14 threads of having at least one argument-per-thread, and frankly the mods are sick of having to moderate and clean up the place for flaming/trolling. So please, just leave those discussions to PMs if you really feel the need to express your opinion on it.
Anyone who ignores this warning will be reported and subsequently dealt with by the mods.

I can't believe Spain lost. They had so many opportunities to score.

Ah well, I guess my step-dad gets to make fun of me today.

Uruguay seem to be really going for it at the start of this game. If they keep this up it could be a good game.

He's saving himself for the second half, quite honestly I can see him scoring a scorpion kick in the top right corner from his own half.

Oh dear, my man got sent off, in a bit of an amusing way though.

When the ref was reaching for the card I thought Khune was going to leap over the barricade and escape into the crowd. :P He clearly did it purposely though, if he played the rest of the group games it wouldn't be fair on the opposition, how could they win?

He'll pick it back up in the knockouts ;)

Whats with the annoying "OMG WE SCORED LETS RUN TO THE SUBSTITUTES" craze in this World Cup. What's happened to the good old one hand in the air or knee slide?

Scores are much rarer and hence much more valuable in this World Cup. I reckon in the next one they'll be running off into the locker rooms.

Silly of Suarez. Diving like that.

Oh well, new goalie wasn't far from saving, or at least touching the ball. A save would have been awesome.

Definite dive from Suarez, but it was reckless from the keeper. SA were never in this game anyway.

Yeah, the keep brought it on himself, really. DGSO is not something you want to risk, even if it is debatable.

DGSO

What-what-what-what?

Anyway, I don't think he deserved a red card. It's not as if he intentionally touched the tip of his foot with the tip of his own foot, I mean come on... And the fall that followed was obviously a bit theatrical. It looked worse than it really was.

I don't get why the guy went down? I'd want a World Cup goal rather than giving Forlan a penalty.

As always with Suarez. The guy can play, but he's a bit of a pansy.

Oh they're all like that, and they'll keep being as long as FIFA lets them. I don't see why situations such as this can't be reviewed by the referees using recordings from a couple of angles. This should have been a penalty (because the foul was nevertheless done) and a yellow card for Suarez for overdoing the fall.

Its an acronym we are taught around here. Denies Goal-Scoring Opportunity. One of the red-cardable offenses.

He didn't really have to do it on purpose; the lateness of the hit is enough to draw the call. The goalie sort of forced the ref's hand there, but I think he made the right call. It is just unfortunate, is all.

@Fighters: He could have got the goal, but it was a low probability - he let the ball get away from him a bit. That's why I said DGSO was debatable. Getting a PK for his team was a safer option. The red card was just icing.

Yeah, intentionally or not, that's a red card offense. Unfortunate for the keeper, I do like him. I thought he was going to cry when he was heading to the showers.

This working during matches is getting annoying. I've missed some good action it seems. At least I'll get to see the full card on Friday.
