Atrocious work by the referee. The second card for Kaka was totally uncalled for.

Ivory Coast have proven themselfs to be pathetic losers.

EDIT: On a different note, the second half actually had some pretty great football. Bravo!

Ridiculous sending off. Should be a retrospective ban for the IC player. And the whole Italy squad, just to make me happy.

That said, losing Kaka for the next game might not be a terribly bad thing for Brazil. He's looked pretty poor these two games, so a sharper player could probably contribute more.

They're through anyway, so if he is suspended it doesn't really matter anyway. That red should definitely be rescinded though.

You referring to his second goal? Looked okay to me. There was contact with his arm, but I wouldn't say that intent was there. Good call by the ref, I thought.

There were two contacts with his arm. Using your arm to control the ball so it falls in front of your feet so you can shoot? Ha. I hope replays of it will appear on YouTube or somewhere soon so I can link to it and tell you exactly at which two points Fabiano used his arms to control the ball, yes, use his arms to control the ball.

The first "handball" could have been given against him since it did hit his hand, but it didn't look deliberate. The second was never handball in the first place, since it struck his upper arm and by my understanding handball has to be from the elbow down? Was a cracking goal though

EDIT: Veeno, that's where the BBC really are excelling just now. They have replays of key moments (goals, penalties, sending offs) up within about 10 minutes of the event, even if the game's still playing, and the live stream online is smooth despite the volume of traffic they must have. Which is more than I can say about ITV's... Viewers in the UK only though I'm afraid. (Incidentally, anyone in the UK who wants to watch ITV games online, watch on the STV site instead of ITV. Their live player is so much better.)

It's not from the elbow down, that would be ridiculous. It's handball when it hits the arm, i.e. below the shoulder (so shoulder is not handball, but anything beyond that is). Also, when he's trying to control the ball which is falling from above the arm has no reason to be above his head, unless he plans to control the ball with the arm, which he did in the second instance.

The seam of the sleeve is a good general indicator of where handball territory starts. Also, he was trying to chest-trap the ball so that it would land at his feet. To do so, you need to make you chest concave, and putting your arm up is one of the easiest ways to do so. There really appeared to be no deliberate attempt to use his arm, so it becomes a judgement call on the ref's part, and I think he made the right choice.

I've played for over twenty years, mostly premier level, including a season with the Olympic Development Program, but the travelling was too expensive for that. :(

Yeah? Well I invented football, played for 75 years, won the World Cup with Hamilton and the Champions League with Israel, and won the 1865 golden boot playing in goal.

The world wants your money.

So i'm not sure who the runner up for this group will be. I'm leaning towards Portugal, but we'll see.

Ivory Coast isn't out yet, but if I were them, I would be contesting Kaka's card. They need Brazil to smash Portugal if they want to advance.

They play Korea next, right? I think they can beat them.

I like Ivory Coast, mainly for Drogba, and would like to see them get to the knockout stages, but I wasn't impressed with how they finished that half.

I wouldn't mind seeing any of those teams advance; it is one of the more interesting groups. Who I am really rooting for now, though, is Slovakia. Go guys, knock Italy out! Woo! :woot:

The big bad thread of one upmanship?

I think it was handball, football is always boils down to differing opinions though, no escaping it.

Incidentally, who is this Joanne person in the Brazil team that the commentators keep mentioning? And on that note, what's the story with Juan? He's listed in every line-up, but I never hear him mentioned.

He's a sort of average, tall defender who plays in Serie A. I don't really rate him but Brazil arguably don't have a better partner for Lucio.

The referee actually asked Fabiano if he handballed it as they were going back to the centre circle. I wonder what he said? Si senor, I have to tell the truth, who wants to win a silly copa anyway?

Kewell got sent off, Fabulous Fabs as he is officially known adds to his tally. What the referee didn't see is almost as interesting as what the Butler saw, don't you think? And Kaka is simply a victim of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RKo_50sWW4, bwuahaha from someone with Turkish blood and a long memory. Brazil are like "Oh no we have to do without Kaka, what shall we do?" The answer is probably score more goals, I reckon they were close to dropping him anyway.
