Football Thread - World Cup Special V

Gah, on my third beer and we still haven't scored. The confidence of our team is clearly non existent, everyone is scared [censored]less, can't handle the pressure. Big changes need to be made at half time, Joe Cole on for Heskey, play Gerrard just behind Rooney, Joe Cole on left in a 4-4-2. No need for a target man, especially one who's horrible.

By the 5th beer I'm expecting a goal.

Agreed and I just started drinking after that first half.

Well you can't really say that the match isn't interesting to watch. Lots of action and lots of opportunities on both sides. It would be better if there were goals, true, but this is definitely better than the majority of the first round matches.

I guess it might have something to do with Slovenia not participating in it. I'm rather biased that way, I probably wouldn't be following the world cup if our boys weren't playing in it.

Oh and if you can watch ESPN. I understand from the blogs ITV are patronising the Algerians in commentary. ESPN have Martin Tyler and.... a Scotsman. You can see the fear in the English players' eyes, he correctly points out.

Where did Capello find Belhadj and Ziani? They are excellent, Rooney and Gerrard are feeding them great ball.

Carragher gets booked for being too slow by the ref, who has been paid by English fans. No Carragher next game!! :)

ITV commentary is terrible. Andy Townsend is such a bandwagon hopper it's not even funny.

And Carragher is awesome :stare:

You fiend!

We're doing terribly though :( The passing is sloppy. Credit to the Algerians though. They're defending well and in numbers (almost everyone behind the ball at all times) so they're gonna be tough to break down. All the play is with us at the minute though so hopefully we can force a late breakthrough.

I sure hope not. I'd much prefer the status quo to continue. Then when England faces Slovenia on Wednesday (I think) they'll be psychologically ruined and our boys will get their second victory. :chaos:

You'll see when the referees say +5 minutes. It's usually like that when a "great" team like England is in this kind of situation near the end.

edit: Well, +3. I was close. I guess they realised they can't stretch it that much.

Ah, the sigh of relief. Now if only the Algerians were to play a tie with the USA too... ^_^

That would be optimal. But the important parts are:
1) Algeria can still make it to the elimination rounds if they beat USA so they won't lose their fighting spirit and lose in advance.
2) The pressure on the English player is going to be hellish and we all saw today how well they perform under pressure. This means they are unlikely to win and may even lose if the Slovene team plays the way they did against Russia or in the first half of the game against USA.

All in all I expect Slovenia and USA to advance.

All on the last game. In 1990 England won the last game of the group stage after failing bad in the first two games, and they reached the semis only to lose on penalties.

So it's not a disaster yet, only disappointing.

Garrrrrr I'm past my 5th beer and still no goal.

I can't be arsed to anolyse that shower of [censored] though, tactically wrong with poor players. Booooo, looks like I'll be cheering for the Dutch before I usually do. We don't deserve to qualify from this group.

That's why it was so important for Algeria to draw with England. If they had lost this game they would have been eliminated from the competition and then USA would be much more motivated in that game so they'd win. But this way both teams will be in a fighting mood so I'm expecting a draw.

And I don't really see Slovenia losing vs England either, not with the way they've been performing in these matches.

Plus England's morale will be crap after these two games.

Well, we haven't played well so far but all it takes is a game where we click and that's it. Unfortunately, Capello doesn't look capable of changing tactically and the players don't look like they have the balls to wear the shirt.

If we turn up against Slovenia we'll blow them off the park. However, in all likeliness we'll slump to a 0-0 or 1-0 loss.

I think it would be somewhat fair if England beat Slovenia and Algeria tied with USA so England and Slovenia go further, but then again maybe that wouldn't be fair because England doesn't really deserve to qualify from group stage with this kind of play. In all fairness USA played better than England in both rounds so far.

Wayne Rooney (no longer 'Rooneh' in that odd testosterone chant Americans reserve for chants of U S A) has actually contributed to this game. "It's nice to hear your own fans boo ya" he said to a camera on the way off the field. The Guardian says it is sarcastic spitting. He has a career in TV.

Haha, yeah I heard that, maybe he shouldn't play like he's drugged then. There's an idea Shrek, if he plays like that all season for Manure then I'll be a happy man.

Maybe he should stop commiting so many pointless fouls, too. He cost England a corner kick at one point by pushing over an Algerian player for no reason, and he had some other silly fouls, too.
