And before that, when questionable situations arose the referee would walk over to one of the assisting referees to consult him.
And don't be ridiculous, people. Obviously because of all the hustle in that situation the referee just saw something wrong. Mistakes like that happen. They still do communicate in person when the situation requires it, I've seen it happen often enough.
...and a referees job is very difficult, they don't have the luxury of 4 replays from 5 different angles, they have to make a split decision on what they can see and go with it. On the whole, they do a good job but they're bound to get something wrong from time to time and invariably when they do, everyone goes ballistic about it. I've seen worse refereeing performances than that before though, you see some right gaffes every week.
