Football Thread - World Cup Special IX

Post » Wed Feb 24, 2010 8:50 pm

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AMERICAN-STYLED FOOTBALL

Just a friendly reminder - we're not interested in having discussions about what the game "should" be called, be it "soccer" or "football" or whatever, so please don't bring that kind of nonsensical arguments into here. We've gone though 14 threads of having at least one argument-per-thread, and frankly the mods are sick of having to moderate and clean up the place for flaming/trolling. So please, just leave those discussions to PMs if you really feel the need to express your opinion on it.
Anyone who ignores this warning will be reported and subsequently dealt with by the mods.

An extra note people, keep this thread nice. Everyone is welcome to have an opinion. They are entitled to that opinion. You can think that they're an idiot for having that opinion, but please, please, don't post about it in the thread.

Still think it's fairly open at the minute, could be any number of teams. Think Brazil will have the beating of the Dutch though. :sadvaultboy:

I have Spain over Brazil, but I'm thinking maybe Argentina gets there over Spain. Brazil.. well, they're are a pesky bunch and they will likely win the whole thing.

Ha, there's a Facebook fanpage titled "I'm a great goalie! Jokes, I'm Robert Green."

Spain will do it still. They're a top team.

To make two nations go absolutely bananas, I hope Netherlands meet Germany in the finals.

Spain vs Portugal. Considering how Spain has been playing, I think Portugal is going to win.

Sivartus, beware of saying that. Brazil has one huge historical achilles heel - every once in a while, their defence suddenly develops amnesia and forgets they are world champions.

The transfer of Laurent Koscielsny to Arsenal seems imminent now.

http://www.fclweb.fr/flash/?id=5851 This from the official website basically saying he hasn't travelled with them and it should be concluded by July 1st. Huzzah!

With the USA out (and Sweden & Norway not even making the cut), I have but one team left... Japan.

Here's hoping they crush Paraguay.

With the way these games are going, I can't tell if I'm watching the World Cup or the International Diving Championships.

I kind of expect Brazil will beat the Dutch, but I very much hope it will be the other way around. The Dutch have been taking it easy until so far, but they'll give it all they've got against Brazil (they'd be silly not to). So I think that for both teams this quarter-final is going to be the hardest match of this WC up to date and the only match that could be harder will be the final one against Argentina/Germany.

The guy's a genius, really. He sends out some other guy to take the heat at the pressconference and meanwhile he gets to work behind the scenes to make it look as if he's invented the wheel again.

Whether we like it or not, he's not going anywhere soon.

Oh, and we'll beat Brazil. The teams we faced so far, with perhaps the exception of Denmark, are teams we would play in our practice campaign. Every single player has been slacking of so far, except for the goalkeeper and yet we've only gotten two goals against us, both out of penalties. Sure, there's a chance we might lose, but it won't be by much.

Yes. And I think they might actually be capable of doing so. Japan's been playing surprisingly well this far, I'd say.

With the way these games are going, I can't tell if I'm watching the World Cup or the International Diving Championships.

Actually. There has been a lot less diving than I thought it would be. Chile's been worst so far (or best, had it been the International Diving Championships) and now they're out.

My guess is Japan will beat Paraguay and Spain will beat Portugal. And that we'll see some major mistakes by the referees today as well.

I'd agree with these predictions. Japan will probably only win with 1 goal of difference though.
