Football Thread - World Cup Special XI

Post » Sun Mar 28, 2010 2:44 pm

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AMERICAN-STYLED FOOTBALL

Just a friendly reminder - we're not interested in having discussions about what the game "should" be called, be it "soccer" or "football" or whatever, so please don't bring that kind of nonsensical arguments into here. We've gone though 14 threads of having at least one argument-per-thread, and frankly the mods are sick of having to moderate and clean up the place for flaming/trolling. So please, just leave those discussions to PMs if you really feel the need to express your opinion on it.
Anyone who ignores this warning will be reported and subsequently dealt with by the mods.

An extra note people, keep this thread nice. Everyone is welcome to have an opinion. They are entitled to that opinion. You can think that they're an idiot for having that opinion, but please, please, don't post about it in the thread.

Today is the culmination of it all. Spain vs Netherlands in the final. Cue Spain passing the ball slowly around the Dutch for 80 minutes doing nothing much, before a Villa shot bounces off the crossbar, both posts, then in off the 'keeper's :spotted owl:

Grrr...

Ha, I think you've called it about right. :P
more Grrr...

so that's where the loyalties lay, huh :stare:

'kay.. Robben in the third minute, making the Spanish squirm from the get go..
vd Vaart in the ninth minute, off the post from a set up from Schneider. Demoralizes them even further.
B)

All the football wives from the Dutch team in skimpy dresses to further confuse the Spanish players.. :hubbahubba:

so, me says 2 - 0, for us. :celebration:

Now I've seriously jinxed the game

btw, how did we go from IX to XI? Did I miss a memo again..

You're assuming the Dutch will even see the ball before the half hour mark. Their "gameplan", if Arjen Robben is to be believed, is "we're going to do what the Germans tried to do, but it's going to work for us!"

btw, how did we go from IX to XI? Did I miss a memo again..

We had two thread IXs.

:ahhh:

Less than 8 hours to go before we write history!

Not to underestimate Spain, but we all saw against Switzerland, Paraguay and Chile how well they can play the ball around and score at the same time when the opponent isn't Poland. I'm not too worried.

EDIT: Also, Robben said we shouldn't do what the Germans did, which is to give away too much space.

It's collective psychology, we can take the Spanish team because we've done so before in games that mattered. -doesn't matter who played then or when it actually happened, because it's just a collective thought, unrational, but still there non the less.

'We can take them'

But against the Germans it's a mass collective case of
OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!.. :ahhh:

Of course, in complacency lies a big threat as well.

Still, thank  it's not against the Germans.
edited for spelling, of course...

The Dutch to win with Sneijder taking the golden boot. I'm gonna say 2-1 Holland.

I said this the other way round Spain winning 2-1 with David Villa getting the golden boot.

Wouldn't argue with that as I did back Torres to win the golden boot just before the tournament started.

Tennis game all the way up to the 90th minute when some relatively unknown Spaniard puts the ball in the Dutch net with a lucky toe-kick, leaving the Golden Boot either to a vote or straight into a saw's teeth.

Holland needs to play aggressive and physical, not the waiting game like those poor, misguided Germans. Van Bommel and De Jong need to bully around those spanish dwarfs. Btw, I don't care about the Dutch I just have some money on them winning.

Now I, the great D.Foxy, will make a prediction.

IF THE SPANISH SIDE PLAYS TORRES AS A STARTER THEY ARE DOOMED. TORRES IS THE GREATEST BAD LUCK JINX THE SPANISH HAVE EVER HAD.

I doubt they'll start with him though.

I'll be heading to town in just under two hours, it's going to be a great night!

I don't think Robben should play. He's done nothing (besides scoring one, maybe two (lost count of who scored how many) goals) besides, what we call in Holland, "pingelen". This basically is not passing the ball on critical times and trying to score a goal.

For the rest, Holland all the way!

There has never been a country that became the world champaion that has lost one of the matches in the final rounds. Spain lost to Switzerland, so we win :D Also the home team has always been the winner too AFAIK :P

So yeah... who said the odds were against us again? :P The key to beating spain is to score first, then furstrate the eff out of em :D

EDIT:

Here's why NED will win:

- Psychic Parakeet supports us
- Drugged Russian supports us
- In the history of the WC there never has been a champion that has lost a match in the final round (Spain lost to Switzerland, we haven't lost any match since 2008)
- All world championships were won by the home team AFAIK (We're the home team)
- Spain can't score for diddley (miss miss miss miss miss miss, after the 20th miss it's already 1-0 for the Netherlands thanks to a quick counterattack by Arjen Robben :D)
- We have long range shooters which Spain doesn't really have (Sneijder, van Bronckhorst - yeh him too, not the first time he scored a goal like the one in the Uruguay match, Kuyt, van Persie etc.)
- Octopus Paul is delusional, all he does is grab a mussel from a box (drunken russian said so...)

Sounds reasonable I suppose... :P

I bet 8 dollars on Holland that I don't have anymore, so they better win. 2-0 with Sneijder wrecking [censored].

Also, if Sneijder doesn't score enough goals to get the boot, is it given to the 4 people tied? How does that work?

I think it would be so much more interesting and exciting if it were Germany vs Netherlands, there would be riots.

Which I sincerely hope doesn't happen as it will frustrate "it" out of me and start taking it out on all those who deliberately avoid the autocensor in any little way. :stare:

Seriously - I hope it is a great match and I don't mind who wins as long as it gives both sides of the fans good entertainment. .. and as long as Spain wins. :D

Not sure but I think it goes on assists but I do think bookies have to pay out on them all.

Yes, with a tie in goals, assists will count. At this moment Muller from the germans has the most assists of the 4
