Veeno, I suspect that

1. You are NOT a Team USA fan

and

2. You have NOT seen any of the 'controversial' decisions (read: blatant cheating) connected with Team USA in the 2002, 2006, and this world cup.

Oh no. This is almost as bad as English fans with penalties and the war.

Worse!

I think that if "Team USA" (whut?) were to play actual good footie, the ref wouldn't make any difference at all.

I heard a good one today, if the World Cup teams were cars, Holland would be a Robin Reliant. :P

D.Foxy, I suspect that

1. You are NOT generally a football fan

and

2. You have NO idea what an actual 'controversial' referee decision in football is.

I also suspect that I'll ever be able not to laugh when I see "Team USA"... Sounds like some kind of a different name for Justice League, then I start thinking about who would make a better goalkeeper - Batman or Superman - then I realise how ridiculous what I'm thinking about is and I can't stop laughing. I can't help it.

Help.

I'm choking here.

The only real 'controversial' decision I've seen against the US is Edu's non-goal. Other than that, our matches have seen the same stuff every match has seen. The US has also missed a lot of opportunities so far as well. You can't let bad calls get to you, regardless of the sport. There's never going to be a time when a ref is overwhelmingly against you with his calls, and if he is, the game is probably rigged.

It is true, Veeno, that the 'Gods' of football (read: Europe and South America) have for long looked down and sneered at pathetic little team USA.

AND it is also true that for many, many years....the period 1970-95 in particular...their sneers were based on solid fact. We were a weak, third class team with a fifth class fan base. (That should give you an idea of how long I have been a soccer fan. I remember when we DIDN'T even have a team USA, and I was cheering - in the 1970 world cup - for Team Germany, and DER BOMBER Gerd Muller...)

But no more, Veeno. A new Age is dawning. Slowly, year by year, we have been steadily climbing up the ladder.

AND we would have been there a lot faster, too, if it had NOT been for blatant cheating. Penaties given for nonexistent fouls. Goals disallowed for equally nonexistent fouls. Handballs RIGHT ON THE GOAL LINE being blatantly overlooked....the list goes on and on. Even Kaiser Franz was disgusted at that one...

So, Gods, sneer on. Sneer on. A new Age is dawning in spite of your words of disparagement.

Let's hope Ghana beats the USA, so Africa still has something to root for and this entire referee nonsense about the USA can finally end.

EDIT: Oh, please Foxy, get over yourself. It's not just the USA that suffers from bad referee decisions. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr2oTmQ0GwM actually destroyed Australia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Pm4jD5kU4U, IT'S PART OF THE GAME, EVERYONE IS AFFECTED.

If USA loses then the entire referee nonsense has just begun. The only way to stop it is to let USA win. everything.

Jesus [censored] christ do you have to be so spiteful?

And the rest of the [censored] world wonders why we Americans love our American football so.... the rest of you are just absolute [censored]s when we try and enter the international level.

I think USA should win. They have more stars, Dempsey, Howard and Donovon - to beat Ghana. I think it could be one of the tightest (and least pretty) game of the last 16.

But I'm looking forward to it.

Yeah, the rules clearly state that this was a case for a referee's drop ball.

I hope the USA get a really bad refereeing decision (like a penalty against them or a goal wrongly disallowed) so that all the Yanks can continue complaining about being the only team in the history of football to have some bad decisions go against them. It'd also make for an entertaining game in what promises to be a pretty mediocre game.

I say it'll end USA 3-1 Ghana.

Ghana leads 1-0 and the USA have nobody to blame but themselves. They missed a few good chances and let Ghana have the initiative.

If the USA dont pick themselves up during the break they'll have to go back home soon (after of course getting drunk with the two amigos, Bill Clinton and Mick Jagger.)

So the Irish were just whiners about the hand ball? They didn't have any right to complain either? I bet they didn't http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/8368100.stm. They were man enough not to http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/8367420.stm.

Seriously people EVERYONE complains about calls no matter what the sport, or what level. So honestly, the next person that complains about people knocking the refs is getting a warning.

USA have svcked so far. Lacking going forward and poor defensively on the goal. Howard should've had it covered and De Merit was too slow. Poor stuff.
