Football Thread - World Cup Special VII

Post » Tue Jan 26, 2010 3:58 pm

On a serious note, I think the match will end 2 - 1. However for who I can't really tell, I'm not that much of a football freak only when its Denmark VS -inset county name - then i'll watch! :celebrate:

I guess that makes us two of a kind. Though I'm cheering for both Slovenia and Netherlands because my father is Dutch.

Aww NZ are out, i wont be getting £1000 for them winning the world cup then :sadvaultboy:

Although Italy are out... I think in years to come we may look at this and say, "yep france, italy and (england or germany) went out rather early".

Even in 20 years there will be faint echoes of vuvuzuelas :D

1-0 with little touches of brilliance, we're on our way!

EDIT: Meh, 2-1, still not at the top of our game, but good to have Robben back!

Nah, I'm pretty sure the Geneva convention prevents it.

Roffle!

Also, why isn't Van der Sar goalkeeper for the Netherlands team? Has he retired or something? I know he played in the qualifications.

He's retired from the national team. He came out of retirement 2 or 3 matches because the new keeper was unavailable for those matches. Still playing for Manchester City, though.

All the great goalkeepers are going into retirement. :(

First it was Chilavert, now Van der Sar.

Speaking of Chilavert, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3CAMpVnT0Y.

Speaking of great goalkeepers and Maradona, does anyone here know how many penalties (which he shot) has Maradona not scored in his career?

Fixed.

I do find it odd seeing the Dutch playing without Van der Sar in nets, it just doesn't seem right after 16 years of Van der Sar in major tournaments.

What a brilliant day of football Im overjoyed that this world cup is turning into something unique and special with quite a few more "wild" entries into the knock out stage. I'm not being funny but imagine the odds you would of got on Slovakia to win the world cup before the first game was played! :P As always in retrospect it looks worth a flutter.

Hey Greece won Euro 2004 didn't they? (Sorry greeks!)

Im really anticipating tomorow with what will hopefully turn into one of the most memorable games so far in Portugal V Brazil thats going to be some match I think, that or both sides cancel each other out and we have a really boring match :yuck:

As for the weekend Im torn I'd love for the USA (took them as my second team when England got knocked out to Brazil) to get a run like in 2002 but Ghana are my sweepstake team so....

GAH

As for us facing Germany I feel quietly optimistc I think that we have a really good shot at beating them considering the realtive youth of the team and we know the Germans a little better in regards to how they will play than an uknown entity like Ghana.

Tell you what looking at the likely teams we are going to face if we carry on (hopefully) progressing we certainly will deserve to win Germany -> Argentina -> Spain I think its looking likely with Brazil in the finals :bonk: - correct me if I'm wrong.

I want to see Crouch get some time on the pitch though because I really want to see him do this again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b90gpqFp5Bw

C'mon England!

It sure is, Van der Sar was a true hero. However, Stekelenburg is a great keeper who just keeps on improving, so we could have done a lot worse.

EDIT: True that, Wasp!

Drogba just tried to kill the ball. Nice header to follow it up to give Ivory Coast the 2-0 lead.

The ref in the Brazil/Portugal match is giving away yellows for diving. Good for him, I say!

I love this ref, he's not taking any [censored]. More refs should be showing players cards for complaining and diving.

Could/should have given a red card for that handsball, though. And perhaps to Pepe, that was pretty reckless.
