Football Thread - World Cup Special VII

Post » Tue Jan 26, 2010 6:40 am

THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH AMERICAN-STYLED FOOTBALL

Just a friendly reminder - we're not interested in having discussions about what the game "should" be called, be it "soccer" or "football" or whatever, so please don't bring that kind of nonsensical arguments into here. We've gone though 14 threads of having at least one argument-per-thread, and frankly the mods are sick of having to moderate and clean up the place for flaming/trolling. So please, just leave those discussions to PMs if you really feel the need to express your opinion on it.
Anyone who ignores this warning will be reported and subsequently dealt with by the mods.

First time I've ventured into these threads I believe but I'm back from semi retirement! :foodndrink:

Hmm I have to say I have mixed feelings over today, glad England are through for one although I was on the edge of my seat for most of the game and really would of appreciated a more comfortable margin.

Ghana are through too which is good as they are my sweepstake hope and I could see them beating the USA if they are in good form its just a shame they don't have Essien as he could be the talisman to push them that bit further. As the only remaining African represenatatives I would personally like to see them make at least the Quarters.

However...

I feel terrible for Serbia who without a doubt were the victim of the worst refereeing (in my mind) of this entire World Cup how on earth they were not awarded a penalty for that handball by Cahill I will never know. Add into the fact they had 2 disallowed goals I think the players had every right to be furious with the ref (and you should of seen some of their faces once the whistle was blown!) it was quite simply a farce.

Looking ahead I really would like to see New Zealand progress for the sake of Oceania and after their perfomance against forza azzuri they don't half deserve a little more adventure. The fact that they could go through and Italy could drop out is something I find rather amusing and in keeping with the whole bag of surpises this world cup has and is turning into. Also South Korea are doing south east Asia proud with some technically beautiful football and solid performances. More please!

I would have liked to see England come a bit closer to their potential today though, maybe the next match.

As for Sweepstakes, I have little sympathy for you. I got Honduras :stare:

and South Korea have always been a magnificent team.

The handball I agree should have been pulled up, certainly should have been a dot shot.

The two goals disallowed, that was just good referring, both were done by offside players. They shouldnt feel cheated, they are the first team to verse the full australian side, Germany and Ghana both had Australian's get a red card early in their games. I dont know why Australia was ruled out by so many for beating Serbia, we just had alot of bad luck and poor referee discisions in our first two games.

But...both Australia and Serbia are out, now I must go for New Zealand! It would be really good if they make it through. :)

I never watch soccer or pay attention to the World Cup, but today my brother and I watched the US game and we wound up jumping out of our chairs when they scored.

USA almost got robbed on that sketchy off sides call... Anyway i felt the US played better than Algeria the whole game and deserved the win. Kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time, which is refreshing since I generally am not a fan of soccer, be it MLS, other clubs, or international.

I reckon:

Paraguay 1 - New Zealand 0

mainly because New Zealand have one of the best defences Ive seen this world cup...so think it will be a low scoring game, i dont think they will win...but it wont be a huge loss.

All I can hope for then is that the Germans don't make us surrender after 5 minutes when we finally meet them. Looking forward to tonight, hopefully we can start to play some real football now the pressure is off.

EDIT: This new lol smiley is horrible. The previous one was just a happy guy with his mouth open which was way better than this laughing creep.

That's not entirely how it went, but I won't go into that, as it's really offtopic.

Anyhoo, tonight we'll play against Camaroon. Doesn't really matter what we do I guess, but we might as well go for the win.

I don't dare predict results but I dare say that the match between Netherlands and Cameroon will be fairly uninteresting, considering the Dutch already qualified for the next stage while Cameroon is out of the game. Neither of the teams has much to win or lose so neither of them is likely to give it all they've got. The Dutch will probably still win though.

Denamrk vs Japan however, is going to be a fierce battle.

There's a chance the reserves will play against Cameroon, so they'll want to prove themselves to the gaffer. Could be interesting if Cameroon decides to play footie, instead of parking the bus like Japan did.

I certainly hope not. If there's one thing we should have learned from 2 years ago..

I expect the only changes will be for players with yellow cards and in particular De Jong.
