Football Thread - World Cup Special VIII

What? A 2010 World Cup match where England doesn't fail miserably? well I'll be damned

Both defences are static, Lampard has finally realised where he is and I can see either side taking this. Who cares if you go out, as long as you go out in a blaze of glory. Best first half I've seen this year (especially by England). So far.

And the ref didn't see it Fighters Brotherhood. No point in dwelling on it now. Gotta go out and hammer them second half.

Great match so far!

I'm rooting for Germany, but the English were robbed of what might prove to be a crucial goal. It proves two things: Not only the USA suffer from these decisions, and Blatter should resign.

Hey, Fighter, karmic debts need to be repaid, even after 44 years.

And now, that said, LETS SEE A COMBINATION OF ITALIAN CUNNING AND GOOD OLE ENGLISH FIGHTING SPIRIT IN THE SECOND HALF!!!

Half time thoughts:

England is lacking pace on both the offense and defense. James is doing a cracking job, though. The historical 'grievance goal' Germany suffered in 1966 is now paid off - karmic debt anulled!

I like to think that the 1966 goal was karmic payoff for the earlier transgressions of 1958.

Still, this is why refs should use cameras.

Wow... You mean in soccer there is nobody behind the goal to tell when it's in? What the hell! Why does the Ref, who's often at the other side of the pitch, the one to say if a goal is good or not??? It's not a question of video replay, it's a question of common sense! Why isn't there someone behind the goal to tell when the ball is in like in hockey??!

Man, soccer might be fun to watch, but it's rules and conventions sure are retarded.

Sorry to make another comparison with hockey, but how come we can go trough the entire Olympic hockey tournament without a single controversy, but seemingly every single Soccer game ends with more complaining about the officials then about the actual things that happened in the game!!!

Why is there only one ref? (and the 2 secondary refs dont do anything important)

Why does he have to decide when a goal is in??? (that makes 0 sense)

Why does this kind of thing seemingly happen only in the world cup and not in the top level club soccer games here in Canada?

I'm baffled, now peaple wont talk about the lovely play of the players, but again only of the officials, and it's not even his fault, it shouldn't be his job to see if the ball is in!!!

I dunno how he didn't see it as it was the only thing of note happening at the time but you're right. We've gotta win this. Got to.

It's a nice thought but Karma actually doesn't exist in football. If it did Argentina wouldn't even qualify for a world cup, at least for the foreseeable future. :P

It was a [censored] unbelievable decision though, a bit embarrassing for a refereeing team that's apparently good enough for the WC.

Oh and by the way, they do have referees assistants that stay in the penalty box for decisions such as these in some forms of the game. It's being trialled in the Europa league at the minute.

Just you wait guys, I have a gut feeling that something's going to happen to Argentina too. This is a strange world cup, the strangest I have ever seen for 20 years.

But they could have censors to indicate when the ball has crossed the goal line, like Wimbledon. That would be fairly instantaneous.

Despite the disallowed goal (clearly in), England have been lucky. Game should be about 4-2 or 5-2. Cracking game so far.

Gerrard and Lampard have been awesome.

The reason this pisses me off (and what happened to the USA doesn't realy, bad calls happen, and even with video replay, it's a part of every single game. And I understand the argument against video replay, it makes sense to keep the flow.) is the fact that there is only one ref, and he has to determine if the ball went in the goal. That's ridiculous, sense he'll never be in a good angle to see if it's in or not! I cannot grasp why there isn't a goal official behind the net... Even two five years old could do it..... What the hell.....

You're Scottish. We sympathise.

Acesolid, it was tried for the Europa Cup. But Fifa want female players to wear short shorts and kinda forgot about sensible innovations. All I can say is Michel Platini was a great player.

I think a video referee is needed in football now....in so many other codes it is now just a standard thing, even on a state level. Same with Red card suspensions....they should be overulled if not valid after the game....thats not something that should be decided in a split scond by the referee. Video isnt far off...not after all the bad calls in this World Cup, you wait till some bad desision sets the result of a quater or semi final.

At the moment I still think game could go either way....both are having good attacking runs now...if england can pull in the defence a little bit more this will be close.

There are many inventions ... such as a GPS type ball and a GPS type system for electronic checking of goals and offsides, for instance - that FIFA has rejected.

Their excuse?

"Football is a game played by both the First and Third Worlds. We must make sure that any changes to the rules are affordable all over the world in every pitch".

In other words, because a few villages somewhere in the Third World MIGHT not be able to afford this equipment, it is banned even in the WORLD CUP.

Why? It sounds like a pretty good idea to me. It tells you exactly when the ball passed the line and it doesn't "interupt the flow of the game".

Machines don't have an opinion or bias, so they're instantly better than any referee. FIFA just refused to use them because some 3rd world countries might not be able to afford them.

FIFA's point has little vality...

You think my match on a half dirt pitch with 12 year olds as linesman is even remotely the same as a international match (I play in a 17-18 year-old comp)....no of course not. Give the internationals proper refering where the results are actually important in deciding best in the world.

Germany scores again...england is in trouble.
