For all Playstation 3 users:

From incrysis and Playstation magazine:

http://www.computerandvideogames.com/291859/blog/crysis-2-looks-bad-on-ps3-we-finished-it-yesterday-and-have-to-disagree-says-psm3/?site=psm

I feel the need to add some balance to the debate, because the pvssyr circulating the internet is in marked contrast to my experiences with Crysis 2. Plus, above all, it isn't fair to the game, or its developers, since gamers are threatening to cancel pre-orders based on opinions - however honestly held - that don't reflect the truth of the updated code I've been playing.

So I've outlined the main criticisms being put at Crysis 2 PS3 below, adding my own, lengthy experiences with the near-finished build (and for the record, I don't owe EA a thing - I love games that are good no matter who makes them).

Crysis 2 PS3: The truth

It's been claimed that the performance of the PS3 version of Crysis 2 is underwhelming, with a low and choppy framerate and unresponsive controls.

Well, this wasn't my experience. I've played multi-player with the maximum number of players (12) and noticed no slow-down, jaggies or screen tearing. The frame-rate held solid too. It sounds like the version others have been playing is a build that hasn't been optimized and (possibly) several months out of date.

Don't miss our exclusive review of Crysis 2-rival, Homefront, in the latest issue of PSM3 - on-sale today in all good newsagents.
The only point I'd agree on is that the visuals - compared to the single-player version on 360, which I also saw - appear slightly less colourful, giving the darker maps slightly more murkiness. But the difference is negligible.

We disagree that the Xbox 360 version performs significantly better than PS3. At our review event everyone played multi-player on PS3 - even the Xbox and multi-platform journalists. Would EA do this if they weren't confident the PS3 version was on a par with the 360, if not the PC?

In short, I don't think PS3 owners should take these reports *too* seriously. It's good to hear journalists speaking their mind, especially when developers were happy enough to show the game in that condition, but it does feel like the media is 'poking the bear' - nothing does better traffic than a PS3/Xbox 360/PC comparison. And let's be transparent here - it's part of the reason we're responding but, mostly, since we wouldn't want PS3 owners to feel like they're getting a raw deal when (on the basis of code we played extensively over the last two days), they're not.

Yes, PS3 does sometimes get the short-shrift when it comes to multi-format ports - most recently I've pointed out in the magazine that the PS3 version of Bulletstorm isn't up to the same standard as the 360 and PC - but that isn't true for all games, and I think it's unfair to level these criticisms at Crysis 2.

Well, as ever, the truth will come out when all versions of the game hit on March 25th - and you won't be short of intricate head-to-head HD videos pointing out miniscule differentials in facial textures, lighting etc.

Keep an open mind: On any console, by any standards, Crysis 2 is a pretty exceptional looking game. Compared to the Xbox 360 version, all we could notice is that the PS3 game was *slightly* less colourful, with less rich blacks.

You can read my Crysis 2 review in a forthcoming issue of PSM3, with updates here when the online review embargo breaks.

I really don't think too many ps3 users are honestly worried. I think alot of the "worried posters" are pretending to be ps3 owners to try to stir up console war sh*t on the forums. The few ps3 users who are concerned are people who think that the opinion of one person is a fact. Not only that, but one person who is not really examining the game too well on the same screen he viewed the 360 version with.

Honestly, how many people think they can see detail on a TV at an event like E3 better than the TV at their own house?

All the same, thanks for posting Asyrix.

I don't particularly care about the differences, I'm just pissed that Crytek lied. They said we wouldn't be able to tell..

The whole less colorful and less rich blacks can be fixed by lowering the brightness in game or adjusting your contrast settings on your tv or upping dynamic contrast a step. I am really not worried about the ps3 version and can't wait to play this game. I hope everyone at least tries the demo on the 15th before they freak out and cancel pre orders.

maybe to the untrained eyes is what he meant. no need to cry about it, especially over something as minuscule as this.

Alright. I believe it.

But will it look BETTER then the 360 version, as it should? I know some people will retaliate, but between Gears of War and Killzone/Uncharted, the latter simply looks better.

LoL at the above poster

comparin propriatory technology engines for the PS3 and a multiplatform engine for the 360 is ridiculous.

and PS3 is always outshined in multiplatform releases for the reasons we all know and it is not a critique simply architectural issue.

Seriously some people shouls stick to playing exclusives.

Whose crying? I just don't find false advertising to be good for PR.
I already said I don't care about the actual difference itself.

Good try though, just let down by your reading comprehension.

crytek always lies about everything, didn't they say that this game will be better than crysis 1? they didn't even gonna realese it with DX11. they also say this game will look more smoother on the ps3 than the 360... lies from crytek

-Whether it's better than Crysis 1 is a matter of taste in gameplay.

-Not having DX11 at launch is that big of a deal to you, huh?

-Where is the link to the quote that said PS3 would be smoother? The only thing I recall that was even close to that was that Yerli said that when doing their research they were getting SLIGHTLY better performance on the ps3. And performance can be in areas other than graphics. Have you personally played both versions?

-Here is another critique from a group that got to play the ps3 version at GDC:

http://translate.google.it/translate?hl=it&sl=it&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.everyeye.it%2Fps3%2Farticoli%2Fcrysis-2_hands-on_13347

All I am saying is, unless you have personally tried both versions or have a link to a group that has done side by side anolysis, don't just assume you know.

uhhhhhhhh....the italian article does not say that they think the PS3 version runs best, it says that they were TOLD it would be the best console version (which contradicts what the SAME person said not a few weeks ago about the 2 versions being pretty much identical)

I call BS

Well if one of the team has the balls to say it, then that must be worth something right?

true, it could worth something x).... but overall, a lot of us are wondering which console is gonna be superior, i'll say we are gonna see the answers in march 15, or when the game comes out. Just of seen the ps3 multiplayer footage, to me it looks the same as the Xbox360

Wasn't trying to imply that they said that. From the article, they saw no problems with its performance, not that it was better than the 360. Contradicting what the IGN writer said about bad framerate and muddy visuals. Just pointing to examples of people who have played the game who aren't saying that the ps3 version is obviously worse than the 360 in an attempt to get people to stop jumping to conclusions based on one opinion.

TV settings = color +5, contrast MAX and black level on medium!
What difference?

Xbox 360 vs Ps3 again?
Its always a case of bad vs. terrible. Its so redicoulous to insist to have about 2-3 % more performance than the rival platform.
Its like comparing the performance of two compact cars. In my opinion the so called optimization for the Ps3 and the secret behind those "good looking" ( in relation) Ps3 exclusives is just clever use of extreme short drawdistances embedded in clever leveldisgns.
But a game like the first Crysis ( a game which makes no compromise in maxing out hardware capacities ) would easily bring the playstation 3 to its knees. Thats why Crysis 2 had to play in another surrounding... they had to find a way to excuse the way shorter draw distances than in Crysis 1.
