For all you realism lovers + things I've worked on for a few

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 1:24 pm

So I thought to myself, people sometimes really exaggerate with the realism they want put in games, but they don't get that realism sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't work. I am a realism lover myself, but I understand that sometimes it gets pushed too far.
Here's a little strip I made to show how realism gets pushed too far: (yes, this thread is mainly to show a few things I've worked on over the past few hours)

http://i53.tinypic.com/9ixmvc.jpg/

Also, I'd like to mention I've worked on a drawing for the past few hours... so here it goes :) comments and critics are always welcome (It's a Skyrim drawing, don't worry folks...)

If anyone would like to save it for himself and use it in some way they have my permission (Don't care what you do with it really...).

Man, what's with everyone posting fan art today. I swear this is the third one I've seen today.

(Btw, great drawing/comic. I enjoyed it ;) )

Well on the realism strip, I agree that it's ridiculous to complain about hand placement in first person view but the bottom part about setting the Troll on fire is what it does now lol.

To tell you the truth I only did because everyone else did it... I always thought about doing it, but now I told myself "Hmm... well, if everyone's doing it now I might as well give it a shot" :)

The strip made me chuckle and I thought the drawing was really good, but I couldn't help wondering what it would look like in first person.

Whats wrong with the bad guy catching on fire? I've always wished my foes were set ablaze and either burnt do death or scrambled to put it out when I blasted them with my magic fire! :flamethrower:

But that strip is wrong though. :( First person would be looking through the players eyes, that's why it's called first person. In literature, first person is when it's written from an "I" or "me" perspective.
And if you hit something or someone with a fireball, it wouldn't necessarily explode into flames, it would probably just sear the spot where it hit.

But yeah, I get the point, People really do ask for a lot when it comes to realism. It's as though the idea of suspending your disbelief when you play a video game is gone or something. Some things have to be sacrificed for the sake of gameplay.

I have to admit I didn't really get the strip (maybe I've not been following all the debate here closely enough, and tbh sometimes subtle humour goes over my head a bit) but I LOVED the Dragonborn comic/portrait, good work!

So why is the strip wrong? In first person you look through your eyes and you see the player's hands look all stiff and let's face it, it would be really weird walking with your hands like that, your sword in front of you and your other hand raised with a spell (and that's just walking :P). The fireball would not explode, but that creature is practically made of fur, so it should burn pretty easily.

And yeah, you get the point :)

By the way, Epona222, thanks :)

You should do a strip on realism discussing how occluded the vision would be inside a helmet.

I use "Darknut's first person enhanced" personally. It is amazing.

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=119915&id=7773

In Oblivion, I can freeze enemies and I can shatter them into pieces with one strike and it is amazing to see an enemy flying like a fireball across the room, with mods.

Realism can be fun and immersive. If enemies were catching fire, one could differentiate an enemy that doesn't as having resistance to fire. It would actually help gameplay.

You are right, but only to some extent. Note that too much realism can ruin a game, some realistic features should stay in reality for a better experience of gameplay :)

Try tossing a fireball in real life, lets see what happens.

It's magic we are talking about, it would be epicly unrealistic if it actually did go up in flames like that. For an object to catch fire, it would have to reach a minimum heat. Imo, everything that happens in the game should pass a magic-realism check, even if it is magic it should somehow be realistic but because it's magic, it cannot exist in the real world anyways.

hardcoe mode can easily solve all the "realism" problems.

Hey, he's filled with fur and the player makes the troll's entire body to burst into flames, a more believable theory is that he should burn quicker and heavier than the way he is currently burning in-game (I barely noticed he's on fire when I saw the screen).

The third-first person thing is a little inaccurate

Sure, it would look like that if you imagined the bottom of the screen being the bottom of your vision, but making games look exactly like how your eyes would see them would look extremely odd unless you have a huge wrap-around TV/monitor to play them

Instead, imagine if you are looking through a small box (slightly bigger than the box you can make with your index fingers and thumbs) pressed into your face

You'll get a similar result to the in-game pic with your arms in their natural positions

I'm not saying it's illogical. I'm stating the obvious, if you want to see your entire body in first person, be ready for things such as this :P (unless they change it).
