Where is the Arena?!

For somthing to be standard in TES games to all of a sudden not be there is very...bothersome...

Morrowind didn't have a join able Arena faction either. There was an actual arena, but all you did was fight high level duels there.

That said, would've loved to do some pit fighting in Skyrim.

Well being circled by Mammoths and taking on 3 giants at a time seems like an Arena to me.

They do have an arena in Cyrodill.

You are in Skyrim now.

The Nords don't need fancy arenas.

They sail out to an island or climb ontop of a mountain top to fight there.

There are enough blood feuds in Skyrim for people to get all the entertainement they need.

Also, no Nord would stand outside a fight and just watch like an Imperial. A true nord would join in!

"Standard" seems a bit strong. The arena in Morrowind was only used a handful of times, and I don't recall any in Daggerfall or even the eponymous Arena.

The only race inspired by the Romans are the imperials, not the whole ES series.

I thought that all the bars, inns and pubs doubled as Arenas.

For people who are saying "this is Skyrim, not Cyrodill"

umm, Skyrim is still half controlled by the Imperials...And since the Arena is somthing that Imperial citizens like do for entertainment, youd think the Imperials would have set up some Arenas in there provinces to make it seem more like home, and to keep the citizens happy...

In RL the Romans set up temples, arenas, and lots of other things they had in Rome in places they controlled in order to "Civilize" or "Romanize" the barbaric places they occupied...So you think the Imperials who are very much like Romans wouldnt have done the same thing? I do...

And I know the Imerials are only 1 race...But they have the largest Empire and are a BIG part of TES. Sorry but if you compare the Imperials to say, the Argonains, who do you think has a bigger role in TES? Thats why I said for a Series so inspired by the Romans because it IS...

This makes sense, but then we've only seen arenas in two of the four previous games, which suggests they don't necessarily set up arenas in the other provinces.

That would be a great official DLC.

The DLC could be questing in new dungeons for things to help build the arena and then at the end of the DLC the reward is a fully built arena with a player apartment inside some place

Each of the differing races is inspired by a different culture, but that doesn't mean that they are a perfect imitation of said culture.

Inspired =/= Replica

Thus, the Imperials have qualities that are largely drawn off from what is known of Roman culture, but they are not meant to be an exact imitation of Roman culture.

I did find an arena like structure in a dungeon
there was a pit with a bunch of vampires on top who opened cages to let beasts in
wasn't really an arena qeust though, just something you'd walk into randomly
ended up killing the vampires as well

If you're on the PC you'll get an Arena. You could also spawn any number of enemies your PC can handle. Just fought a dozen giants and 4 ancient dragons.

Not quite the same as a built in Arena with quests/functionality behind it but still...

Time for a brief history lesson!

The Romans, during the Republic and into the early-mid Empire, were fond of building temporary arenas out of wood. These arenas would be built in a communal area (for the city of Rome, this was usually the Campus Martius) to honor the dead in early Roman history, and later as a sport/pastime or to commemorate an event. After the games concluded, the arena would be taken down. Julius Caesar is famous for sponsoring a whole slew of games in temporary arenas such as these.

Also remember that the Flavian Amphitheater was started by Vespasian and completed by his son, Titus, around AD 80. That's over 500 years since the accepted founding of Rome! Even then, it was only one of many permanent amphitheaters popping up around the empire.

Finally, keep in mind that Hollywood is largely responsible for perpetuating the myth that gladiatorial combat was the prime form of entertainment for the Romans. In truth, it was the circus (chariot racing) that appealed to most Romans, and you would more often find a circus in a city than an arena (if they had these structures at all).

To say that the Imperials in the Elder Scrolls are at all a solid mirror of the Romans is a stretch. Sure they have classical features, they wear classically-inspired armor (more so in Skyrim than previous games), and borrow Latin titles and honorifics, but don't look for Romans living in Tamriel.

Inspired by history is not the same as being history.
