I will never roleplay a female character in Skyrim or any TES game, because I project my own personality into my characters.
I am not feminine enough for such a feat as cross-gender roleplaying.
I do suppose it's different for people like me who prefer to play in third person. I don't project myself into my characters at all. That would be awful, I'm the complete opposite of your typical fantasy hero. If I had to be involved in a war in a fantasy world, I'd be a cook or something like that, and I'd only serve nice and warm vegetable/legume stews and things like that. I don't even like mead. Now if an RPG came along where I could actually project that into a character and it'd still be fun, maybe then I would. Until then, I play RPGs in a way that feels like being told a story about a character of my design. Having some experience with pen&paper RPGs probably helps. When I play a female character, it's a story about a strong and beautiful heroine, rather than a big, burly, dirty barbarian. Basically, the kind of woman I would like to meet if I lived in a world like TES. Nothing against barbarians of course, but there are plenty of RPGs where I have to play that by design, so I don't see why I'd have to do it again when a game comes along that gives me a say in it. I also like reading novels that feature strong female leads for pretty much the same reasons, traditional fantasy often focuses on male characters, which does get old eventually.
Edit: And no I don't use women I admire in real life for inspiration. My wife would be seriously pissed off if I pretended to play with a doll of her that I can control.
