Forcing my character to "join" Winterhold College to

Post » Fri Dec 16, 2011 12:57 am

Thats just not acceptable, especially for a warrior that has nothing to do with magic. I should not be required to join nor have the quest to join forced onto my character without me wanting/asking for it. It destroys immersion because now I have it stuck in my journal to talk to the woman in charge to begin my training as a mage.

That is sloppy game design to say the least. Seriously.

Main quest line has me going to Winterhold College. I cant get in unless I get past the first NPC thats for joining it in the first place.

Another quest is the Legend of Gauldir quest. No spoilers of course, just that to ever hope to complete it you must join the Winterhold College as well. I thought it was a terrible design decision too. I just don't see why you just can't lockpick the door to that particular dungeon.

Yeah, the grounds should have been accessible by the public, or there should have been some dialogue to tell the [censored] at the front gate that you just want to get some questions answered about the specific item you're looking for.

Maybe its telling you to have a little variety. I don't complain when missions make me use weapons.

I can't think of a miscellaneous quest that requires you to join a faction.

Not to mention that the same questline has been going to get help from an NPC in ANOTHER faction and he wont even help me until I help him....which starts that factions questline.

Seriously. [censored] off. MY game, MY character, MY choice.

Whats next? Complaining about quest specific achievements?

The OP is perhaps, overreacting but if you don't want to join a faction you shouldn't have to in order to complete a totally separate goal.

I never did enchanting except with mages anyways and I always joined the guild with them so that never bothered me. Besides, there's always the enchanting from the Wizard's Tower.

Well, technically you didn't if you got Frostcrag Spire, but I get the point.

The choices offered in the quests in this game are extremely limiting. The vast majority of quests involve the tried and true (and totally done to death) go here, kill everything, get loot, return it script. Where are the choices? Where are the multipe outcomes? Where are the consequences? For a so called open world game, Skyrim takes far too many decisions out of your hands.

I had a similiar experience with the main quest in Riften. Whilst I wasn't forced to join the Thieves Guild, I did come into contact with them and was forced to do something horrible and completely out of character for me, something I would never have even comtemplated doing that playthrough. It completely compromised my RPing, and I seriously considered just abandoning the main quest. In the ended, I went along with it, and I still feel horrible about it.

I can't believe they're pushing you in directions you don't wanna go in a TES game now.

The task you are referring to is what made me realize that I apparently do RP... because I refuse to do some sneaky thief [censored], I'm a warrior! Absolutely unacceptable to force you to commit criminal acts.

I don't even want to be Dragonborn....corniest thing I ever heard. At the end of the day though, there is way more good than bad and no alternative game for me right now.

yeah it svcks... i play a warrior and since this damn quest the guards say that i'm the new member of winterhold. i mean wow, they give you the chance to get in there without using real magic... your thu'um(which is magic too, but different) is enough, but in the end you are still the new member of winterhold without any interest in magic. stupid.

oh and yes as the riften thing got mentioned... yeah i didn't quest there at all, because most things pushed me into getting into the thieves guild. but my character is not a thieve...

The complaints here are just getting more and more pedantic and idiotic.

Nobody is "forcing" you to do anything. It's an obvious component designed with the intent to introduce you to a side of the game sword swingers might otherwise miss.

Here's an idea.. .ignore the quest and move on.

Seriously.

Sometimes you just have to do things (out of character or unwillingly) to get stuff done, it's as simple as that, in real life too.
