Forge system could explain glass/elven sword debocle

Post » Fri Dec 10, 2010 11:41 pm

Seems like everyones debating wether the sword that the elven armor guy uses in the screenshot with the ice wraiths is glass or elven but has everyone forgotten theres a forge system??...add that to the evidence that we have layered clothes and skyrim could be the most in depth equipment system in the series...but it seems like everyone forgot this feature so im just gonna bring it to the forfront of the forums minds..the forge system seems to allow us to use materials(glass..iron..possibly jewels) to make specific weapons(maybe items too) to be used by us...obviously...but maybe a quest in the future will require
us to forge something for somebody else for gold...maybe we could make easy money that way or even set up shop

Look http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1177758-new-armor-design/page__p__17416044__fromsearch__1#entry17416044. Scroll down two posts. Now ask yourself "was this thread really neccessary?"

Yeah, let's all go argue about the direction a windmill spins.

You do that. I, for one, have never even visited that particular thread.

@OP - 2 things

1. I agree that the forging system could explain much about what we cannot say for sure concerning armor and weapons. But I don't think discussing ideas about armor and weapons to be a bad thing.

2. Debacle is spelled with an a.

@Danger Dan - I'm glad you have your opinion about what we've seen, and I'm glad you mentioned the smithing as well. And no, this thread is not necessary. Just like another thread that got blocked last night because it was very critical and unnecessary.

@danger dan, keep in mind that we didn't known each othe and when you use some words to show your displeasure with someone opinion, you can hurt his/her feelings, unlike what happens with people that hang aroud with you and is seing your body language.

It's assumed due to two screenshots having similar armor where one has a shirt and one doesn't, plus a different pauldron.

On the one hand it seems like they would bring it back because a lot of people wanted this. On the other hand, they could have fallout like system with set outfits since they're taking a lot of stuff over from fallout and these two are just two variations of one outfit.

What was? Help me out here, I've read the OP 6 times now and can't really find a coherent idea in it, much less one that appears to have any bearing on "Forge system could explain glass/elven sword debocle." Looks more like some vague, disjointed rambling about various nothings to me, but it's possible I missed some startling revelation that ties it all together into a cohesive whole.

In previous threads a lot of discussion and debate has been going on about some items of armour and weapons from the screenshots. There is a debate over some things being elven or glass. Since they look elven in some respects but then have green glass like parts.

The OP is suggesting that this could be because of the new forging system, where you will be able to forge to some limited extent.

Yeah, I've seen all that.

Uh..ooookay... so my previous request still stands, because I'm not seeing the connection. Yes, I know there's a forging system. I don't see how it would make glass parts look elven, any more than I see it making ebony armor come out red, or steel come out looking like Dwemer.

This forum is literally filled with speculation topics about vampires, werewolves, liches, river rapids, prostitution, what the different races will look like, the direction a windmill spins, seasons, holidays, hardcoe mode, etc. I really don't see how discussing the concept art is any worse than any of those topics.

yep, i suspect its an elven design with glass as the material used in the forging.
which probably means you have to find/purchase designs.

This is like a new low point in these boards. Why is everyone going off on this guy because he had an idea? I think it is a rather good idea, the forging system would kind of svck if there weren't unique designs only available through it like mixing elven styles with glass and stuff like that.

The problem is that I very highly doubt that we can actually forge custom designed equipment, even though some, perhaps in wishful thinking, seem to have taken forging to mean that. Much more likely, forging behaves like in other games with similar mechanics, which is that if you have the appropriate materials, you can take them to a forge, and used them to create items from a generic list of premade items, these could just be default items, or maybe some items on that list can only be acquired by forging, you might be able to craft any item on the list if you have enough skill, or perhaps you need to learn how to craft certain items first, at the very least, I think that would be logical for more exotic items. But either way, I doubt we can actually design our custom weapons and armor when forging. Now, in theory, it would be nice to be able to do that, provided the system gave us enough freedom to not have every custom made sword come out looking like the same one with a different colored blade or a slightly different handle, but I find it rather unrealistic to actually expect that from the game. So it doesn't really explain the sword, more likely, the sword is just one of the default weapons, maybe it's glass, maybe it's elven, it may even be some other material we haven't thought of, possibly because it's new to the series, but I doubt it was custom designed in the game.

You realise it could simply be Elven made glass equipment...

Well, that could technically be the case, as maybe glass is made by elves, but then that renders the debate irrelevent as I'm assuming there's only one kind of equipment called glass and one kind called elven in Skyrim, much like in Oblivion. When we talk about elven, we're specifically refering to the style of armor and weapons called "elven" (I don't want to say material as I doubt elven armor is actually made of a material called "elven".) not armor and weapons made by elves in general, and when we speak of glass, we mean armor and weapons made of glass, whether these are made by elves or not is irrelevent.

It's an elven sword in that pic.

1: Its weird styling on the tip fits in with the feathery bird motif of the elven set,

2: The guy is wearing elven armor. They'd want to display a fully matching set for a promo pic.

But it looks green? Vaguely. Can easily be explained away by an imagespace modifier or lighting setup altering coloration.

Glass weapons in Morrowind and Oblivion were very conspicuously GREEN. They also looked less like metal blades and more like shaped shards/lumps of glass.
