Forum Update Feedback & Discussion

Upon seeing the lack of a TES V forums, I suddenly heard millions of voices screaming until they were silenced.

The forums don't need to be taken down to add a new section.

Yay! Finally got it back to some semblance of the way I like it. And managed to get rid of the profile drop-down options without needing to enable scripts too, which were really slowing down my page load times.

Site is slow as hell. It's pretty though, but it looks like I'll be using the ugly IP.board skin. :P

Flood Control is there to minimize the load on the servers. This isn't just important for busy periods but it also limits the ability to preform DOS attacks by spamming the search function. It would be fairly easy for someone to make a script which sends hundreds of search requests a second in order to overload the servers if there was no flood control.

It's not a matter of no flood protection vs flood protection, rather it's a matter of how it's done. In this case the rate limited algorithm is rather crude and inconvenient because typically people make two, three search in quick succession to get the results right and then they won't search for a while. Right now they have to wait a minute between each while these two or three searches even when done in quick succession won't overload the server.

Fortunately very smart people came up with very simple algorithms that have solved these problems. The http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Token_bucket and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaky_bucket basically provide each user with a number of searches, lets say 10. Each time a user makes a search one is substracted and when the number reaches 0 the user can't search any more. Fortunately the count goes up over time with a maximum of 10.

The works for everybody because normal users don't have to wait between searches while a bad user that tries to spam the site will get ten searches off and then he'll be waiting 10 minutes for the next search.

A lot of people seem to be saying this but mine is fine. Maybe because I am using safari but has it always been laggy?

gonna take a while to get used to the new skin, but overall it's good. Only bad thing is that it's harder to see Thread pages on the main screen.

Another suggestion: I'm having a lot of trouble distinguishing between threads with new posts and threads that have no new posts. Is there any way to make one brighter or even a different symbol?

I'm lovin' the update, I usually use my iPhone to cruise around and before you couldn't tell if someone was a moderator or see a lot of things, just the name, time date and if they had edited there post or not. I remember seeing one moderator post about flaming(how not to do it),I'm not going to say who, and I remember thinking "why does this guy/girl care if someone expresses there feelings? it's not there forum..." when it kind of was. so yeah, I really like the update, no problems here. there's a ton of new features and it's a lot more easier to look through the site.

I thought I would make a short list of things I do like.

1. When doing a search I can search for three letter words and I can search for them in topic titles as well as posts. The search for posts shows me the entire post instead of just the first line of it.
2. It's nice to be able to get a preview of the first post in a topic without opening the topic.
3. Ability to add as friend from someones post/or to pm them from the post.
4. When I select a different forum from the bottom of the thread, it goes right to it without clicking go.
5. I like being able to upload my avy without having to first store it on photobucket.
6. I can use the drop down under my username at the top to "view my content" and all my posts and topics show up.
7, The drop down menu on the main page that lets me select which subforum I want to view.
8. I can click on Fallout, for instance and all forums for Fallout will show up with an option to select the subforums for each Fallout section just under the section. Fallout:NV will have each subforum for that section listed just under and I can quick click it.

Things I don't like:
1. No note pad.
2. No zoom for us old folks sight impaired folks. (I can just move my monitor across the room I guess :P)
3. I can't find the coffee machine.
4. No link on main page to CD though really, it means you only find CD if you are here about a game in the first place. :P
5. Side space for avys is a bit too large for my liking.

In a word - Clunky.

I haven't time to read this whole discussion but since the site came back up, I am on cable broadband, page renders I agree are slow, lord help those of us still on dial-up (which includes some valuable participants)

Seems the more advanced and speedy browsers become, the more plugins can be taken advantage of and sites take a step backwards in time regards performance - not forwards which you would expect given browsers and machines becoming more capable of rendering fast.

Every page refresh or link so far has been a slideshow of chunks of page building before my eyes, and the loading info "waiting for static.zenimax ..." - I agree, constantly waiting. The user experience has not been improved, maybe it was important for security reasons.

I like the look, it talks the talk, but doesn't quite walk the walk.

Edit: And this

I like the shorter search wait (10 seconds now? ) and 3 character search.

And, am I mistaken, I can refresh within a thread and get the new posts? That's a change right? (if yes, I like it I like it! )

On the bottom of each forum you can switch to the default IP Board skin. Doesn't have so many transparent layers so it renders allot faster.

Hold down Control and press + or - to zoom.

My goodness, change makes some of you folks very cranky. And honestly, this wasn't as dramatic a change as the last huge overhaul. Some of the things will get sorted out and the rest, you might find you like them, or you'll just get used to them. Or, in the case of some of you, you'll do fancy schmancy stuff with scripts and stuff. :D
Just wait until its a DX12 first person forum, and you're missing the old 2d listings.

Implementing a smarter search limitation isn't within our scope. If IPB official doesn't do it, we are not going to rewrite the limiting.

The limit was originally in place because it was a huge tax on the database to do searches. Now that searching is moved to separate system it wasn't very necessary.

I've dropped the rate limiting for everyone to just 5 seconds.

Yeah but if you zoom in more than a little the entire thing expands and pushes off the side of the page - it used to be that text size was really the only thing that increased or decreased so you could make the font quite large without breaking the page.

That's going to drastically reduce the griping in these threads :)

Aah, I only zoomed in a few clicks to see if it worked. Saying that, with the http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b351/thewayofthe_wonderer/fff.jpg I can zoom RIGHT in.

pretty obvious on the ip.board skin

On the Bethesda official one it's literally gray on gray on gray. It's hard, for me at least, to distinguish the two slightly different shades of gray that are on top of two layers of gray.

I generally don't like brighter skins, but the ip.board is easier for me to read.
