Forum Update Feedback & Discussion

Post » Sun Dec 19, 2010 3:22 pm

Apparently the forums are back up, for the most part at least. It seems the avatars aren't working (at least not for me) and there are some odd graphical issues going on.

So what do you think of this update?

I think it looks pretty damn sixy.

It seems you have to upload avatars from your computer instead of linking them from a hosting site now.
At least that's what I did.

You actually need to grab a new avatar. To do that, you now upload the avatar.

I get an error saying "The upload failed - you may only upload an image file"

The file I'm trying to upload is a 90x120 PNG (32bit) file and it's 20.2kb.

Repost:

Dislike :shakehead:

The negatives:
  • Who thought Times New Roman in 18pt is a good idea for the number of posts/topics in a forum? It might not actually be TNM, but its still preposterously big and the only serifed font on the site.
  • The member info box by each post sticks out like a sore thumb. No avatars either, apparently.
  • Impossible to tell pinned topics from regular ones.
  • Sleek black look of (most) of the actual features still clashes rather heavily with the (pixelated) paper-y background of the TES sections.
  • Not fond of the paragraph style sub-forum listing, its less clear than it was before. Does save space, I suppose.

The positives:
  • Floating top bar. Not sure if that was there before, but I like it.
  • Expandable front page.

This is all on the black theme, haven't checked the other(s).

[edit] Expanded and reformatted.

I'll ask... it might just be an issue with everyone trying to upload avatars at the moment.

Repost from the duplicate thread:

I use the black layout. All I can say so far is that it's total crap. It lags more than a bloated Adobe PDF file, it's more difficult to distinguish links from background images, and they increased the size of everything, so that it takes much longer to read, scan, and/or scroll through things. You can no longer distinguish between stickied (sorry, you call them "pinned" here, for some reason) threads and regular ones. All in all, bad choices. They should have asked people for problems before they went and "updated" everything. At least they didn't break the forums for 3 days with no announcement like they did porting over to the new forum software...

You will need to save the image to your pc then upload from there.

Hm, aside from the occasional bug and lack of avatars, it's fine by me. The Admins should fix all this up soon.

A nice looking update, at the least.

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man, I think it's terrible. For me the most annoying thing is that pinned and normal topics look almost indistinguishable. Really like that you can now upload avatars from your computer though; once the regulars are used to that it's going to save us from a lot of useless threads.

Yeah I disabled my form extension immediately (a bunch of userscripts smashed together in a Chrome extension) and the thing I miss the most is the ability to toggle the pinned topics :P

Avatars will not upload... and the size [dimensional] requirements are not listed.
*Will keep trying...

Gif avatar gives the response, "The upload failed - you may only upload an image file".

I am trying to upload from my computer :)

Apparently this only happens when I try to upload a .png image, jpg works fine

I uploaded my avatar from my PC, which is a big improvement on having to host the pic online.
It'll take a bit to get used to, then I'll decide if I like it; right now it is taking a while to load the pages...

Agreed Medivh, surely they will rectify this, cos it is complicated the way they have it now.

I'm terrified. All this change, it'll never stop! Somebody help us! The forums are updating exponentially, soon enough we will have but seconds to post, and then time will eventually become the planck coefficent as we write scripts to document the site and post the replies between updates. It'll be madness!

On a more serious note, looks a bit odd as of the moment, and I agree on the pinned topics discussion. Very difficult to tell them apart from normal topics. The avatar/member info is kind of sticking out a bit more than necessary.

Not bad not bad! :)

I like how we can display all the sub forums with the + button.

Edit: Nice, they stay open too!

I can tell the difference between pinned topics just fine. The pinned ones have giant red push pins beside them.

It's just awful.
Since I've gotten used to the older version this new one doesn't "improve" anything for me.
The small things like when I have a thread watched I see a little symbol to the left of the thread is now replaced with a tiny little eye which is making it hard for me to see what threads I have under watch.
There are surely other things as well that I will get really pissed off about too, might come back and whine some more when I notice 'em.

Oh and it's really ugly.
Yknow when in movies and tv-series some criminal cuts out letters from a newspaper and glues them onto a piece of paper and every word looks really clunky because of the different size of the letters?
Yeah, that's how this feels.
