Forums spring clean?

Post » Mon Oct 25, 2010 5:58 pm

Sorry, not being a troll here. But damn these forums need a spring clean. You guys and gals have far to many sticky posts that could easily be refined into a few.

This forum has enough, but the normal Fallout New Vegas board: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/forum/78-fallout-new-vegas-general-discussion/ is a joke! I have to scroll down just to see any new posts and its not like i'm on a small resolution here. :)

So how about it? All rules in one post? FAQs in another? All interviews in another?

That would make the place look a lot more tidy. ;)

Those stickies are there in the New Vegas forums in the vain hope new members will read them and not make the 5000th post of "ZOMG GAME NO WORK WHY". Having to scroll past them means you're noticing them at least.

Yet probably disregard them nonetheless...

Yes, there are many stickies above the boards. But I just scroll past once until the first new topic is at the top of my screen, and then refresh the screen every now and then. Takes me about 1 second so not a big task. And worth it if those stickies prevent many (or even 1) repeating topics you don't want to see in the topics lists.

The member pics and community poll could be merged, I guess. I think the rules and general information need to split though. And the rules themself are needing updated.

If they were to actually do that, the usefulness of the pinned topics would go from lim(pinnedtopic_usefulness) = 0 to pinnedtopic_usefulness = 0 :P

I disagree, the usefulness of the pinned topics wouldn't change at all. The rules and the other threads are there, just one click away.

Unless I misunderstood you, which is entirely possible considering I pulled an all-nighter last night to finish a paper

In reference to how often (or to be more precise, infrequently) new members actually read pinned topics. By making them even more invisible than they are when screaming at the user, new members are never going to read them.

That made less sense than "that made less sense than your mom did" did.

Is pinnedtopic_usefulness a function? Of what? And what's approaching to what in the limit?

I think all threads should be merged into a mega thread with the title "Stuff".

Ah well, at least you can link them to the stickies so they do notice.

of course pinnedtopic_usefulness is a function, a function that maps the real-world utility of pinned topics as actually used by new members, not the theoretical utility (which is obviously quite high). The function creates a graph over time t which is actually bell-curved in shape (the peak of the bell being when new members finally do look at pinned topics, after which usefulness sinks once again as they know the materials and no longer need to look at them as frequently)

Again, you're making no sense.

A function that maps
  • what
  • to what?

And limit of pinnedtopic_usefulness of
  • what, as what approaches
  • what?

I think they need to be bigger and louder. As it stands right now, they are obviously skipped over by the vast majority of new members as is.

Am I hallucinating from sleep deprivation or are we discussing the theoretical utility of the pinned topics as used by forum members?

I am trying to find out what we're discussing as well.

Those were both specified, utility over time

And limit of pinnedtopic_usefulness of
  • what, as what approaches
  • what?

as stated above, the function maps utility in the real-world

limits without a designated value can usually be safely assumed to go to infinity (or zero, but that doesn't matter since the graph is bell-curved, having a limit of zero at both 0 and infinity). I don't have the infinity symbol on hand :P

Ah, so

pinnedtopic_usefulness: set_of_times → set_of_utilities,

limt→∞(pinnedtopic_usefulness(t)) = 0

Ok, moving on. :hehe:

My head hurts, I [censored]in hate you people

Back on topic, I think we can all agree that there are too many pinned topics and they are taking up a lot of space, especially on smaller screens.

Solution? Either we change something on our side (with a script, like I do) or we 423420405417340379423424405410410423340388385340413418406419428340425418424413416340412409340411413426409423340413418340405418408340417409422411409423340424412409417 into Stuff?, then we can

I'm going to finish this tomorrow when I've had at least 12 hours of sleep. Good night.
