I found Honest Hearts quite offensive...

Post » Sat Aug 06, 2011 12:32 pm

I found their superbly broken "engrish" really stereotypical, and how they are being exploited by a white guy just way too cliched. Plus, all their drug taking and very low sophistication really stupid.

I don't know maybe I'm just being oversensitive.

There's been some issue over the "White Man's Burden" theme of HH too.

The fact that you typed this means that you suspect this is exactly what is going on.

I think you might be a little over. I have a native american background. I didn't find it offensive at all. They were in that canyon for a few hundred years. isolated from the rest of the engrish speaking people. They had developed their own language. Just as my ancestors done a thousand years ago. It doesn't demise their intel, from broken engrish. The same way you would be speaking broken Sioux.

I don't think the "white' guy had any more bearing on the story as any other race. All of the legion are white. What else would the "Burnrd Man" be?

EDIT : I stand corrected. They are NOT all white. And technically, the "The Burned Man" isn't anymore.

Joking aside...It has no bearing.

The language had a pretty good explanation that is rather realistic and made the tribals feel different, they weren't massive drug taker they had 1 ceremonial drug that got used once in game on the player during an optional quest , the white guys exploiting the tribals? they were doing everything in their power not too especially since thats how cesar came to power it was definitely something that the new cannanites would have been extremely cautious about, as for sophisticated what do you expect they live a rather migratory life and feel the old world buildings were taboo so where would they get any tech or if you meant socially tribal societies tend to be less complex in terms of structure since theirs a focus on survival. I thought it was rather well done.

All of the legion are white.

Negative, Karl (Frumentarius at Red Rock) and the man in the Legion safehouse are black. Plus, I think you can find Black Legionaires sometimes.

The only thing I found offensive about it was Joshua Graham and Daniel. I don't think there's ever been more pathetic characters in the Fallout world.

A "missionary" and a disgraced murderer? Sad.

The idea of people finding this offensive OFFENDS me. People are so hypersensitive about race relationships. Their's a group of not-white people speaking broken English! That's RACIST! Give me a break.

I tend to agree. Given the circumstances, if they spoke perfect English - it would be ridiculous.

They are their own unique cultures that developed their own languages. A reversion back to anti-technological ways, with rituals and new belief systems. It was even emphasized that they were smart groups . . . what exactly is offensive about it? They aren't Native Americans anyway, they're brand new tribal groups. Your offense isn't warranted at all.

I didn't pay close attention to "all" of the tribe. But Isn't salt in wounds (or whatever) just a white guy with a decorated baseball cap?Maybe the broken "engrish" was because they learned from recordings that got warped over time. Or maybe they had the same problem as we have now, where companies create a new word out of two separate ones just because they think its kitchy enough to sell a crappy product, therefore diluting our language with unnecessary jargon. ooops, was I ranting.......?

I think it is suppose to be racist. not because the developers are racist or anything like that, but because it is suppose to convey a 50s racist attitude about backward tribals in a wasteland.
