Found an interesting picture and would like some opinions

So I stumbled upon what is allegedly an excerpt from the intro to Fallout 4's script on Kotaku, and I'm not sure what to think.

http://cdn2.pcadvisor.co.uk/cmsdata/features/3498996/Fallout_4_script.png

Assuming this is accurate, I dont know about this. They've decided my back story, family's back story, character's attitude towards the world, and my characters attitude towards his family. This is even before getting into the whole voice and compressed dialogue option thing.

Then compare this to New Vegas, which says "You're a courier. What that actually means in this world is a bit up in the air. You have a chip. Fill in the rest yourself. Go."

So, what do you think? Is RP going to be limited, and if so, how much of a hindrance will it be to your engagement in Fallout 4?

I hope not because I wanna go with the idea of the wife not being a legit wife but a spy I'm suppose to take out... (Long story).

I had to bend over backwards to roleplay in Fallout 3, due to the restrictive backstory Bethesda imposed on my character. I expect I'll have to do the same thing in Fallout 4.

This is pretty old news that has made the rounds here.

I don't see how roleplaying can be limited by better defining the role.

(It also suggests that the game might actually interact with the PC on a more than superficial level; rather akin to Witcher ~hopefully.)

meh nothing in there isnt rational feelings pretty much everyone would have at that time. As for the background, doesnt bother me and actually ads some depth to our character, plus in the end, its our actions in the Boston wasteland that will ultimatly define us.

Isn't that script old news? Pretty sure it was leaked even long before Fallout 4's announcement.

Anyway, all of the protagonist you play as in Fallout have had some sort of set story to them in who they are to some degree, so I don't see how this would all of a sudden be seen as a hindrance when it has always been a thing in the series.

Depends on who you ask.

Never noticed the part about the podium. Wasn't the PC en route to a speech? I bet this is said speech...

There is nothing wrong with them giving you a backstory. So long as they give multiple ways for your character to logically react then you can rp your character however you want.

I would prefer something like Vegas where my opinions were not so set. The guy (or gal) is already set as some smart, prescient, eloquent type who is concerned about nuclear war. I'll probably have fun playing the goody two-shoes character that I normally play, but it does limit what kind of person I can be for other replays.

I have no problems with backstory.
However, if I am not feeling it, I am going with, "Cryonic Stasis does strange things to a guy/gal."
Think of it almost as a coma patient waking up (and left alone), forgetting who they are- re-defining their personality as a result.
Even if presented with information from the past, the PC rejects their former self; they have moved on and are fine with who they are now.

So.. like every fallout game.

Courier's backstory is decided (and actually pretty impactful on the entire story), same with Lone Wanderer.

I don't see the issue.

All the characters in fallout have had a backstory and all the games main plots were centered around your main pc's backstory.

Fallout 1 you were raised in a vault and had to go find a water chip to save your vault.

In fallout 2 you were raised in a tribe and were sent to find the geck to save your tribe,

In fallout 3 you slightly lived your own backstory and were sent into the world to figure out and conclude your fathers backstory..

In NV you forgot your backstory and are sent into the world to discover it.

None of these plots hindered your rp-ing or forced you to play a certain way.

I'm fine with it, although I know a lot of people aren't. In my opinion, having a more scripted background works wonderfully for telling a more compelling story. So long as I define who my character is as a person, that is enough for me. Having a wife and child and a father with a military background are all things I want/identify with/make sense to me, so it isn't a major issue. I look forward to seeing how the story unravels!

In fairness, we don't know if that was a final script. Hell, it could have just been written exclusively for the auditions.

Actually, this is true. Even the most hardcoe roleplayers can agree with a given backstory. There's tons of table top RPGs that expect certain things in your past. Some even expect your PC to be married or have a fiance, like L5R. It's the voicing and personalty inserted that takes it to far.

Many people forget, that the courier in New Vegas has a backstory too... Just play Lonesome Road. New Vegas don't had a bland character without story.

Didn't that same leak say that you could only play as a male?

No, that was a different leak that claimed to be responsible for the Kotaku leak. Kotaku confirmed they weren't, and every part of that leak that wasn't already rumored or confirmed beforehand was debunked at E3.
