FOV = Cheating?

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 3:23 am

How can you change the FOV?
cl_fov=90
pl_movement.power_sprint_targetFov=90
r_DrawNearFoV=90

You need to edit your cfg in Crysis2 folder and paste those tree lines.

Paste them exactly where?

FoV 90++ give you an "aliens view" from AvP :D:D:D:D90 is what you set for 4:3. ~100 for 16:10.

So no anything over 90 is not "aliens view".

SURE that is a cheat. You can see more than other players and thats unfair. No matter what size of screen you have. I play on a 42" Plasma TV and dont make any changes to my view. And i am still good.
So why you have to change your view on a sweet 25" Screen???
Only because you have an advantage. AND THATS WHAT I CALL CHEATING.
Kid trust me, higher fov than original 55 is only a perceptual advantage and have nothing to do with your skill.
I dont kill by seeing someone, I also like the rest of you need to shoot you with something.

Whats the story with different fov = cheat?

If higher fov is a cheat then I can say that shooting at my back is not good also because you should get in front of me and say "hello, I will now start shoot you, so watch out" :D

I wonder what you all would say if I could turn my weapon visibility off (so I would not see what Im carrying) - ohhh I would be a criminal! :D

You IDIOT call me a KID. I am 35 you F***** so shut the **** up.
When you need to change some files to have more kills than i call that cheater.
AND to change the speed of the mouse is sure not a cheat. Its a part from the game. But changing the view is not a part of the game. Tommorow somebody comes and say: "OH, i have only a 15" and i must use shooting while in steahlth and Aim-Bot. Becaouse my Monitor is sooooooo smalll.

When its only a small advantage, WHY you change it. You are a looser. thats all. Everybody how makes some changes on files is an **** CHEATER.

FoV is not cheating, get over it, its every1's personal preference. (Im fine with my 55 basic FoV at 24")

Haha nice one :D
If you are really 35 then you should know most of the FPS games and play more than me, cause Im only 25.
And if you would know more FPS games then you would know that FOV is something that is not a cheat and it is present in 99% of first person shooters!

Its amazing how you put FOV and unlimited stealth while shooting or aim bot... to one sack.

As for me - maybe you have those 35 but mentally you are 15 and since the game is PEGI 16 then get the **** out.

Have a nice day :)

This topic is on a good way of becoming a "trolling on each other -thread"

The reasons are always players that pretend to be advlts, acting like spoiled kids...

if FoV is not locked, i can only repeat myself, "its every1's personal preference"

My 2 cents. Yes, I consider it a form of "cheating". Why? It's not an in-game option, so it was not intended to be altered by the end user. No matter how easy it is to do.

In a FPS game, one of the biggest advantages anyone has is "battlefield awareness", and FOV is a huge part of that. If I edit my game to set my FOV at 90+ and most other players are at default, I have a distinct advantage over them. Pure and simple. The only way to compensate for it would be if everyone had it set to the same value.

You can't compare it something like Nanovision since that's a game feature and everyone has it.

These types of edits are far to common in online gaming. I know many people to edit their games in order to increase visibility to give them an advantage over other players. From increasing FOV like whats being discussed here, texture modding, advanced engine settings like you can do with Unreal Engine powered games. In most all cases the effect is the same, you can see more of the battlefield than other players, and in most all cases it's considered cheating by the game developer/publisher or server operators.

The most I will do to gain a competitive advantage in an online video game is adjust my graphic settings to remove as much clutter and distraction from the environment as possible. Many competitive gamers do this, but they do it within the games available settings, they do not edit the game files in any way. Where as many people always try and play the game at it's maximum graphic settings. The guy running at lower settings but high resolutions often has a tactical advantage since he has a much better chance of seeing you before you see him.

Well Mr 35 years old. Act like it them. don't flame someone. And I'm telling you straight up its not a cheat. Why its a video option. its in battlefield bad company 2 cod and its in crysis. it is NOT A CHEAT get over it. One more time its a video setting. Its been used for years. i use it and you should too. they cant determine what size monitor you have so you adjust it to your liking. a cheat is wall hacks aim bots and BOOMIJUSTSHOTYOU is a cheat. since your 35 you should know this. I cant stand when someone thinks they know it all. and flames someone. go get anger management. Its not changing a file. a change in file is taking it out and replacing it with something that gives you a advantage. you change a number that is allowed. it gives really no advantage. And here this is a good example. your playing field is all around you and this adjust the view from side to side not to alow you to see behind you . i have a I-Inc 25 in monitor and you bet I'm gonna take full advantage of my monitors capabilities. why don't you accept the facts jack!! cause you got owned.

Dude, for a 35 year old, you sound like a Luddite. Calm down. Drink some water. It's an internet forum, go outside, real life graphics look better and you have a wider fov ;)

is it CHEATING? I'd have to say.... no.

does it provide an ADVANTAGE? absolutely.

A simple example is all it takes...

have 2 people standing in the exact same spot looking in the exact same direction.

Individual 1 with higher FOV can see someone standing to his side, whereas individual 2 cannot. They're both standing in the exact same location looking in the exact same direction, but the 2nd individual with no increased FoV can't see the same person that individual 1 can see. Individual 1 has an advantage, plain and simple. anyone arguing that it's not an advantage to be able to see MORE than someone else is just..... yeah.
However, the 90 FoV is common in FPS's, and the option to change it is often times made readily available, hence my reasoning that it's not cheating. Everyone has access to it, whether it's through console or not.

I would personally go with 90 still. but if you don't like the way it looks or feels. then back it down to 85. never go past 90 cause all it does is make it look like tunnel vision. but 55 in my opinion is way way to low of view.

The 'correct' number for everyone to use is 74. That will set the field of view to exactly as wide as it has been since the original Half-Life. Half-Life, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, and all those old games used a horizontal FOV of 90 degrees. On a 4:3 monitor, a horizontal fov of 90 means a vertical fov of 74.

Just set it to 74, it will look right. On a 16:9 monitor, your horizontal fov will end up being 106 degrees.

These are the lines you should have in your autoexec.cfg.

cl_fov = 74
r_DrawNearFoV = 55
pl_movement.power_sprint_targetFov = 74

I prefer to leave the r_DrawNearFoV unchanged. This variable just changes how close your gun seems to be, and it also changes how first-person animations look when your arms are visible.

As for the moral debate - I don't care if it's cheating or not. I've been playing games on the PC for 15 years now, and it's way too late to ask me to change a standard like the FOV.

I know its not a cheat. i might have mine kinda high. but i always have used that with this monitor. i feel comfortable with that setting. as you like 74. it all preference. the way i look at it is if the view is there use it. its real estate that is being waisted. and i don't like to waste anything.
