FOV = Cheating?

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 12:42 am

Lol, I was playing earlier and some guys started to call me a cheater because I raised my FOV to 95 for crysis 2.

They began to say things like: "Just because it's allowed does not make it right, it's not standard, if it's not in the game the developers don't want you doing it, your changing game files, etc."

I was baffled at how stupid this was. From their perspective I can agree in a way, but seriously? Someone else said "it's not cheating, but it's gay."

They kept saying that me changing the FOV must be why I was doing so good, 25-3 in instant action, etc.

I was honestly cracking up.

To the point of this topic I guess, I wanted to see what other peoples view of FOV.

FoV increases your area of view, for a 16:9 and 16:10 screen the default Fov isn't high enough, somewhere between 70 to 80 is ok, more than that in a single monitor is not normal, some people even set up their fov to 105 or 120 and that gives them a huge advantage since they can see almost everything

Yeah, that's why I love to raise it, I can see more. I think I like it at 95 best, 120 is impossible to play on, to funky.
Especially on a full HD 27 inch monitor, FOV makes the difference.

You guys do realise that the game uses vertical, not horizontal FOV right? 80+ is just insane for vertical FOV. (Default is 55). 65 vertical equates to 90 horizontal on a 16:10 monitor so 65-70 is just right.

An FOV of 90 has been the standard in PC gaming since forever. At least 15 years worth of games used that setting.

I use a setting of 80 in Crysis 2, it looks right to me. I just used an online FOV calculator, and it looks like a setting of 74 is the mathematically correct way to make the game look the way PC games have always looked.

consider also that raising the fov has his side effects, for example it's more difficult to aim as in the same image you have more camera view so the targets are smaller, also people has different monitors with different aspect ratios, so the ability to adjust the fov is a must.
fov is around multiplayer gaming since the beginning (quake?) and it has never been considered a cheat and has been always allowed even in competitions.

They are just wankers, dont bother what they say.

I have fov something like 90 because original 55 was to small for me.

If changing fov is a cheat then in next patch there should be no nanovision :)

Edit: changed the value of fov, mines 90 and I even forgot :)

It is cheap because you have more peripheral vision in-game, in other words, an advantage. I could my FoV really high and see everything if I wanted, then it's unfair because no-one would be able to sneak up on me

I guess a good config in FOV gives more view...
But everytime i see ppl with modified FOV's (through kill-cam)
i'm always wondering how on earth can they play with such a FOV.
Maybe most of them have a very high value to get maximum view...but it always looks weird for me..

It does have disadvantages you know.
I checked my fov again and mine is 90!

It is a bit of advantage because your not like with your nose in the LCD. But the disadvantage is that it is harder to fire on someone that is very far.

I play on 1366x768 resolution on 17'' samsung laptop and 90 is just normal for me :)

Well i call everything you cant change in ingame menu cheat no matter how small or big it is, your changing the difficulty of the game which is a part of the game.
Im not gonna tell people to stop doing it, but i just wont respect your play cause you cant do it with a standard game.
Example quake 3 players who change graphics/views beyond what menu can do, they might get nr.1 at a tournament but i will never feel they deserve it.

Wow this is the first time i have ever heard that FOV was hacking. Its Not It just give you a slight advantage. Not much. Trust me i cant get any extra Kills. So just change it from 55 to 75 or 85 is perfect for a 25in monitor. and around 65 to 75 on a 22in to 24in monitor

SURE that is a cheat. You can see more than other players and thats unfair. No matter what size of screen you have. I play on a 42" Plasma TV and dont make any changes to my view. And i am still good.
So why you have to change your view on a sweet 25" Screen???
Only because you have an advantage. AND THATS WHAT I CALL CHEATING.

Kid trust me, higher fov than original 55 is only a perceptual advantage and have nothing to do with your skill.
I dont kill by seeing someone, I also like the rest of you need to shoot you with something.

Whats the story with different fov = cheat?

If higher fov is a cheat then I can say that shooting at my back is not good also because you should get in front of me and say "hello, I will now start shoot you, so watch out" :D

I wonder what you all would say if I could turn my weapon visibility off (so I would not see what Im carrying) - ohhh I would be a criminal! :D

so, by their logic, anyone playing on anything other then 320x240 on a 14 inch crt monitor is cheating

Standard FOV is optimized to be viewed on TV from a distance. Using a pc monitor at close distance requires a higher FOV to feel natural. It's also related to the aspect ratio maybe. But since the pc version does not support any pc specific settings, they allow us to access those settings via console. By his logic, adjusting mouse sensitivity to other values than 0-5-10-15-20-...-35 would also be a cheat, same as disabling mouse smoothing or acceleration, or just disabling the music...
In the end, no good player will ever argue this to be a cheat. Let's move along, we can't teach idiots over the internet...

Lets get this straight Right now. FOV changing is part of the game. It is not locked down and should not be. it is a video option and has been for years. and its a preference. it gives you more view is right. and i should be allowed to take full advantage of a 16.10 viewing area I'm entitled to. now remember if you try and go crazy it start to become a disadvantage. it starts to look like tunnel vision . and they give everyone the option to change it so its again not a cheat its a video option.

Dont see a problem personally.
Higher FOV means harder to aim.
Its like mouse sensitivity: higher sensitivity lets you aim faster, but also means you could miss more, by overshooting the target.

that is also a good point. I didnt even think about that.

How can you change the FOV?
cl_fov=90
pl_movement.power_sprint_targetFov=90
r_DrawNearFoV=90

You need to edit your cfg in Crysis2 folder and paste those tree lines.
