Frame Dropping

Post » Thu Nov 11, 2010 12:06 pm

I am having a problem that after about 15-20 mins of play the Frame rate starts to drop and the play becomes very jerky.

I exit the game, then run it again and it works at full frame rate again. Until another 15-20 Mins.

At first I thought it was a problem with my setup. Core I7-960 and GTX580

But after visiting several Games Forums I am starting to read MANY complaints from other PC users about the Frame Rate dropping. A couple have even reported it dropping as low as 1 FPS. I did actualy see this once when I was driving the Tank. I had to exit the game and run it again.

It is being reported on ATI cards as well as Nvidia cards. But doesn't seem all people have this problem.

Is Crytek aware of a problem were the frame rate starts to drop dramaticaly and the only way to get it back is to exit the game and run it again ?

This is a Retail version bought in Australia.

not overheating? The card will throttle down when it begins to overheat..

If it is dropping after several minutes that is almost a 100% sure fact that its a heat issue with your GPU.

Definatly not an over heating problem. I have a Games Case which has masses of Air flow thru the case. And the heat out the back of the GTX 580 is quite reasonable, A lot better than some other games I run. This game doesn't actually fully load the CPU at all with Vert Sync on. Running in 1280x720 3D side by side mode. The GTX580 craps this game in.

Why only this game ?.... I run other FPS games in 1920x1080 60p and never have a problem. Even Metro 2033 runs just fine on this card and it never slows down.

I have run the Original Crysis version in 1920x1080 60p and it never slows down. Also run Crysis Warhead and again it never slows down. And they are MUCH more GPU intensive than Crysis 2.

Since it is now being reported by more and more people I don't believe they all have overheating problems.

Why would exiting the game and quickly run it again allow it to work for another 15-20 minuets before it drops again ?

One FPS is not over heating. That is a serious problem.

It has now been noted on the Nvidia Forums that simply ALT TAB out of the game and ALT TAB back into the game also fixes the frame Rate drop.

I guess I will just wait and see were this goes. The number of messages on Games Forums, Including the Nvidia 3D Vision forum now, is increasing quickly.

Okay, so what it is is that Crysis 2 (for some strange reason) actually seems to lock down the clock rates of video cards to their lower profiles and often 2D settings. Basically all the newer video cards have a system whereby they have multiple profiles for core, memory and voltage clocks. One profile is dedicated to gaming and performing high intensity 3D tasks and the others are all just for lower priority tasks. When you start the game, it probably performs at its higher 3D mode profile but then after a while, it locks down to a lower profile.

Same thing happens with my 5850, I usually run it at about 875mhz (725 stock) on core, but sometimes it will drop to either its 157mhz/400mhz 2D profiles resulting in insane lag.

I'd recommend you install something like MSI Afterburner to confirm this is happening, and also refrain from minimising the game if that is what you have been doing till now :)

Good luck man!

There is a problem that was known with nvidia GPUs but it may still exist.

tell me if this sounds like your problem:

You play the game and after 30 min or so you frames drop?

If this is the case and you are NOT over heating there could be something wrong with your driver.

The problem Nvidia GPUs were known for were throttling at temps that were to low. (throttling is when the GPU gets to hot and drops the clocks for safety reasons).

In your case it sounds as though you are not experiencing heat issues so it must be a driver problem. I suggest you download driver sweeper (http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/) "read the instructions on how to use." Uninstall Nvidia drivers and use driver sweeper in safe mods and sweep the old nvidia drivers. then reinstall the latest drivers from Nvidia (http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7-winvista-64bit-266.58-whql-driver.html)<-- these are 64bit Win 7 drivers for 580.

I am also having this issue. Mine happens randomly thought. Can be 5 minutes into the game, could be and hour in. I have my EVGA precision up on my 2nd monitor, and I notice when it happens both of my cards(2xGTX260-216) usage will drop to %30-%40. At first I thought It was a heat issue as well, but my cards barley hit 70c. Never had this issue before.

sounds like you are getting the same issue as the OP. Do what i suggested and see how that turns out.

Oh and btw, if you guys find downclocking is your problem, there are pretty much 3 alternatives:
1) Downloading an older version of MSI afterburner that force disables downclocking (might also be in the NVIDIA drivers, cant say since im with ATI/AMD)
2) Waiting for Crytek to address the issue
3) Flash your card bios (not recommended unless you have extensive experience)

they cant revert to an older msi driver. the 580s only work with the newest msi afterburner.

I get the dropped frame rate problem on my GTX260M, but sometimes the frame rate picks back up again after a few minutes. This also happens with Bulletstorm. Crysis and Warhead both play perfect on the same computer.

I recently cleaned all drivers and installed the latest Nvidia driver. Still have the drops...

The same thing happened to me. I have learned that my overclocked (850 Mhz) GTX-460 throttles down and locks itself to 401 Mhz when it overheats, thus causing a giant frame-rate drop; I have to restart my computer to fix it. That's why I always have Precision running to monitor my GPU fan speed. Have Precision run all the time, check Enable software automatic fan control, and try setting your fan speeds to something like this.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: only for nvidia gpu users... lol.

i have the same problem with my Gtx 295.

In 20 -30 min of game play, the fps go down from 60 to 3 or 6 fps.

Even i run the game in low quality!

And on maps with alot of water the frame drops gone wild!

Have same issue with my GTX 570. FPS suddenly drop from 110-120 to 30-40 and not going back until I restart game. It's definitely not thermal throttling (my Chieftec case have six fan installed, and when this bug occurs first time, I start monitoring temp of GPU and CPU). My system is patched with latest updates, MB and Videocard flashed with latest BIOS and of course I use latest video drivers (even try BETA, but bug still there). BTW, bug occurs only when I play Crysis 2 multiplayer about few hours.

This problem is also happening on ATI cards. Not just Nvidia cards.

If you do a Google search for "Crysis 2 frame rate drops" you will find many many people with the same problem. Different Video cards. Different CPU's. The only common component so far is the officially released game version.

Something VERY interesting.

Most people who have this problem have said it NEVER happened with the DEMO version. Only happened with the commercial release.

And, others claim it NEVER happened with the LEAKED version either. It's only happening with the Official Release. And not everyone appears to have the problem.

I will look into the possibility that the card is switching into a 2D profile. Mine is not as bad as some. Only once mine dropped to 1 FPS. But many are getting 1 FPS very often. Mine is what most are getting. About a 60% drop in frame rate. Some people have monitored their GPU usage when it happens. GPU usage is also dropping heaps. Down to 30-40% usage.

I try even better, I'm using Acronis to backup my system partition and one of backups I made when first install Windows Seven. So I restore system state from this backup, reinstall game (for case they store some data in registry) and copy my Crysis profile from recent backup. After few hours of MP I encountered same issue (even worse, because game won't close properly) on almost virgin-clean system.

Since it has been noted by some it didn't happen in the DEMO or the LEAKED version.

Is it possable the v1.1 Update has caused this problem ?

I have just downloaded and installed MSI Afterburner so I can have a look at what might be going on. I havn't used it before so will take a bit to sort it all out.

Anyway, Just to give you an idea what is happening with the GTX580 when it's all running fine.

Video Mode = 1280x720
Vert Sync = On
System Spec = Extreme

3D = On
Nvidia 3D Driver

I played for about 10 mins. Heavy fighting going on etc.

Max GPU Temperature = 68 Degrees C
Max GPU Load = 57%

As you can see the single GTX580 absolutly eats this game even on extreme. So it's not related to GPU Over Temperature.

I knew the GTX580 was not running very hot with this game. I often feel the temperature of the Air coming out the back of the card. And I knew it was not heavily loaded. It was only quite warm air.

On other games that realy push the GPU the Air out the back is Very Hot.

My GTX 295, from specs can reach 105oC and with NVIDIA INSPECTOR, i can see the game turn my GPU only on 75 - 85oC
Its safe!

The problem is in the game!

how hot is your GPU on full usage?

Never had a need to check it. I know it runs very hot air out the back on games that use 100% GPU usage. And games like Metro 2033 that use 100% NEVER slow down. Crysis 2 is only very warm air. Not even close to the maximum GPU limit.

Crysis2 is only using a Maximum of 57% GPU usage and the Maximum GPU Temeperature was only 68 Degrees in Crysis2.

This problem is NOT heat related. It's a bug in the game.

Ok,

Their was some advice on the Nvidia Forum that gets the Frame Rate back to normal when it drops very low.

I was sceptical that it would work. In fact it DOES work.

I played the game till the Frame Rate dropped to an extreamly Jerky condition. Maybe 10 Frames a Second.

"ALT TAB" back to Windows Dekstop. "ALT TAB" back to the game.....

Guess what ..... It was back to FULL frame rate again !

Now what could possably be causing such a problem were a simple ALT TAB out of the game and ALT TAB back into the Game and the frame rate goes back to normal ?

Very weird.

I have the same problem, although for me it always happens after 5 minutes with my AMD 5770. ALT-Tabbing works in my case too for another 5 minutes and unlike many others I also had this problem in the demo. The game runs like a dream and then it becomes jerky, playable but not nearly as smooth.

And also in my case this is not a heat issue, I can play other demanding games for hours and hours and the only game where this happens is Crysis 2 :(
