Frame rate drops extremely

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 10:20 am

I had it now 2 times happen, that after a few happy hours in a dungeon i leave it and as soon im outside, the framerate drops to maybe 3 or 4 fps. Very hard to move or turn around. I closed the game and the dosbox, restarted, still the same problem. Then i rebooted the PC and everything was fine again. Now, after the next dungeon i have the same problem again. Im playing in fullscreen modus. Oh, and when i returned into the dungeon, fps was good again, just outside bad. After travelling to Daggerfall still bad. Then i entered a tavern and fps was quick again.
Someone experienced the same ? Im sure anyhow, that its a problem of settings, maybe memsize to small ? i set it to 32, as stated.
Help would be great.

When you exit the dungeon, you are left facing the entrance to that same dungeon (the arch with the skull). Just move backwards, away from the dungeon entrance. Don't turn around, or look left or right, just hit the key that makes you move backwards. Just for 3-4 steps. At this point you should see the fps 'free's up' and you can look around, etc as normal.

Given how nearly every thread is about Daggerfall, and I had the same problem as the OP in Daggerfall, I feel fairly certain. Although he could have mentioned. It's the sort of thing I might do, so I won't shout loudly! :)

I would hope so, since the OP mentioned travelling to Daggerfall.

You couldn't go to Daggerfall in Arena? I honestly can't remember. I know you could go to most major cities/provinces in Tamriel.

actually you could I just checked that out the other day. You can go to sentinel, lainlyn, wayrest, reich gradkeep(aka anticlere afther the war of betony), glenpoint, and Ilessan hills. which are all in arena.

Thanks for the hint, will try. Sounds a bit like "eat potatoes in midnight sitting in a cupboard" but when it comes to computer and games, everything is possible :D

I had that problem and got these helpful responses. Try their methods.
Try setting memsize to 64, and cycles to max.
On some games i use with DOSBox i noticed that when i had cycles=auto it set the cycles to around 3000.
3000 is way way way too low for most DOS games, and for Daggerfall that even use 3D, it is a joke.

So as previously hinted, you should first try cycles=max instead of cycles=auto or any number.
Your memsize is fine. Change "output=surface" to "output=ddraw". Surface is pretty slow. If ddraw doesn't work well try opengl.

Ah yeah, Arena's cool like that. Lots of the towns and even characters (the Underking) are established in that game and go on to have much more prominent roles in later ones. If I recall, some of the towns' kings and queens have the same names as the ones who rule them in later games. Forget which, though.

True, although I think it's hard to justify spending a few hours in random Arena dungeons. :P

Wait, I'm having the same problem -- do you make these changes in some file in the DAGGER folder or in DOSBox? And, um, how?

Start>Programs>Dosbox>Configuration>Edit Configuration. Once you make the changes, save the file.

In the edit configuration section under dosbox in the startup menu.

Or, if you had a windows front end like D.O.G.or D-Fend Reloaded you click on the Daggerfall profile then MEM and you click on '32' and enter '64'.

I tried the first hint, when leaving the dungeon not to turn, just to move slowly backwards, this didnt help. When i played fullscreen i had this huge lag, and i did not need to go into a dungeon and leave again, to have this lag, it one time appeared right after logging in. Now i dug out the thread again and read Shades hints, i changed memsize from 32 to 64, cycles to max and output to ddraw. Thanks Shades. If this doesnt help im back here, whining :celebration:
