PC framerate question

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 11:01 am

I have a question about the framerate in the PC version. I'm fully aware that the console versions are capped at 30fps and the PC has "unlimited" framerate.

Here are my PC's specs:

Intel i7 5820k

GeForce GTX 970 FTW Edition

16 GB 2133Mhz ram

1,920 x 1,080 resolution

I have Fallout on Ultra settings.

The thing is, my framerate peggs out at 30 fps. Doesn't even go to 31. ever. My PC aught to run circles around this game. Is there something that could be capping the framerate?

where did you hear the frame rate for PC is unlimited? I don't know either way my self, but my assumption was that PC was locked too.

It was a tweet from Bethesda a couple of months back

"Fallout 4 is 1080p & 30fps on Xbox One and PS4. Resolution and FPS are not limited in any way on the PC."

There is bug on some people's PC where the framerate gets capped at 30. It sounds like you are having that issue. Do this to solve it:

Go to the Fallout4Prefs.ini file and change the part where it says iPresentlnterval=1 to iPresentlnterval=0.

Save the file, close it.

Force Vsync on in your graphics card settings for Fallout4.exe and FalloutLauncher.exe.

You should now be playing at higher FPS.

What monitor are you using that has a resolution of 1980x1060?

No problem. Post a dxdiag report, please. It could be a 30Hz VSync cap.

You gfx card should be able to handle the game on Ultra at a higher frame rate, so unless there is something wrong with the card, you either have a problem with your monitor, monitor cable, monitor and/or gfx card ports being used, or have something funky going on with your game settings.

So I unlocked the framerate in the game config file and when I restarted the game, it ran at 115+ fps. I read somewhere that I would see some screen tearing if I didnt turn on v-sync. So I did that and now it runs at 60fps.

It looks WAY better at 60 fps. I don't mind keeping it here if unlocking it causes more issues.

If your games frame-rate is inconsistent, so has huge dips below the 115 fps mark, you may encounter screen tearing.

So, if you are happy with your visuals, i would leave it that way...with Vsync enabled.

Very high framerates can cause issues with terminals such as over 120.

I'd sure like to not have to limit my framerate due to tearing issues. What's the point of having beasty hardware if I can't use it fully?

I have the same card, the 970GTX FTW and I'm having the same framerate issue. I'll try that fix tonight, crossing my fingers it fixes it because my system specs are almost identical and I should be no problem for this game. Thanks for the possible fix!

Here's the link I followed: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=551069501

It looks gorgeous at 60fps, but I'd love to be able to go even higher. It svcks we're limited.

Your game is atlest playable :D. I Have Intel I5 3.4GHz, GTX 650TI, 8 GB RAM, Win 7. Game is running on low settings under 25 FPS making this game unplayble.
So it's not Hardware fault but optimization is bad.

Gotta remember, once you disable the cap, to go into nVidia Control Panel and turn on V-Sync

OMG I got the opposite problem.

I cannot limit my 970s fps giving me bugs.

Turn on Vsync, in either the game or the nvidia control panel. By default the game takes priority.

I tried this and didn't see any change. It seems to only choose 30fps or 60fps for me. At 30fps it runs sluggish and choppy but when it puts out 60 fps it's smooth with no issues. It really seems like an odd bug. I hope they squash it soon.

Do you have a quality monitor?

Quality Monitor? You mean 1080P 60hz? yes, but that wouldn't be the issue. This is clearly a driver issue with the GTX970, I'm mostly getting a locked 60fps and it won't go above that. When I strafe or move around it will drop to 30fps and get 'jittery'. This isn't an issue with my hardware, it's something going on with the game.

I7 4790K

16gigs 2400

500Gig SSD

GTX970 FTW

Running on a 1080P monitor

A GTX 970 is way above maximum spec so I don't understand why its dropping to 30 fps. Mine doesn't do that.

Have you built your pc yourself? If so can I ask is your motherboard PCI2.0 or PCI3.0. If its PCI2.0 what's your other hardware as you might be bottlenecking? If it isn't this it can only be drivers.
