Framerate stuttering on Xbox one

Post » Thu Nov 26, 2015 10:28 am

I don't have the game but i thought i would post this for xbox one owners in hoping it gets fixed. Seems xbox one version has stutter's lasting up to 1 second and are quite noticeable when loading or going to new area's.

I have been playing since Saturday, (been playing on the day one patch the whole time) when I picked up my copy here in Germany. In that time I have experienced everything depicted in the digital foundry video. I moved my game files to an external LaCie SSD USB 3.0 drive, and the major halting hiccups stopped, but the game continued to have a generally low frame rate. At one point, relatively early in the game I played through an indoor segment that send my fps down into the single digits. The enemies were nearly unshootable at that point, and I got really frustrated. I literally had to use V.A.T.S to get through that complex. Then, again, as I walked through downtown Boston, all hell broke loose and the game started crawling again.

I think what really bothers me about the low FPS on Xbox One is that the game is on the whole quite visually unappealing. As I first emerged from the vault in the game's early segments, the frame rate was stable and I remember thinking, well this game looks muddy as hell, but I guess you have to sacrifice some things for a stable frame rate. It wasn't until later that I realized the game had somehow sacrificed both texture quality and frame rate.

So what does the frame rate stuttering do to the gaming experience?

In my experience, the game is severely altered by it's low frame rate. Every time a feral ghoul leaps at me, the game stutters just a tick, and totally throws off my ability to kill them in mid air. The controls feel perpetually sluggish, with aiming and strafing becoming more challenging than in other shooters.

I have been a long time Bethesda fan. I dont even what to calculate how many hours I put into Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. But, with the release of Fallout 4 I find myself not wanting to boot the game back up. I just dont want to spend anymore time stuttering around the wasteland.

A Final Question:

Does anyone have the new Xbox One Experience yet? Does the game run better on the new OS? The new OS is supposed to have a smaller footprint than the current OS. Maybe that is how guys like Arthur Gies were able to give the game a 9.5/10, seemingly having not experienced the train wreck I have been playing.

Am I missing something? This isn't just a slight stutter and it doesn't just seem to cause a minor problem. This is A HUGE UNPLAYABLE MESS. The factory that you have to clear for the settlers is completely unplayable the moment flames are visible on the screen. In fact, further investigation will lead you to this conclusion: fire, explosions, and any complex visual effects will make the game completely unplayable.

What is the value of a game that is unplayable?

I'm using an Xbox One with New Xbox One Experience update.

I have not had the chance to play it on XBOX one yet, I will later tonight once I get home. My biggest question during all of these issues coming to light is where is Bethesda???? Are they know acknowledging these problems at the very least? I understand it may take time to get a patch out which i'm ok with because nothings perfect unfortunately and these things happen. What i cant live with is if a company does not make a comment regarding the issue. I'm wondering how this problem also was never discovered during testing. I hope they resolve the issue. If not and they let modders fix it for them then im done with Bethesda.

With it being such a big release for them, i would be very surprised if they dont have a patch out ASAP, just a shame it was released with the issues.

Dam this is disappointing i was hoping to get XB1 version but based off the posts.

Mostly because i prefer the controller over ps4 and it gets mod's first.

I have not had that issue there. I am just having an issue finding the boss since I keep on getting lost there. I might just be lucky at the moment. I am actually surprised that it is working this well since other day one games I had on Xbox 1 had a few more issues than I have had. I have only had an issue with some sub titles not advancing in conversation.

edit

Hopefully we can find what the issue and resolve the issue.

I am using a digital version of the game and the default HDD that came with my refurbished Xbox one.

i havent experienced the xbox one issue of the game freezing for a second or so when running around new areas.

but ive seen videos of it happening so i know it exists and i just havent had it happen to me.... yet!

definitely needs fixing before i experience it!

the digital foundry article on eurogamer points towards SSD's fixing the issue on xbox one, aswell as having the side effect of speeding up loading naturally.

this seems to be an unoptimized or buggy background streaming issue to me, and one that needs addressing.

it doesnt happen on the ps4 and the ps4 harddrive is the same speed and design as the xbox one.

i know generally bugs are fixed on beth games (upto a point where they simply get fed up with patching) but i dont want to see any dlc/killcam added animations or other crap until this specific error is sorted on xbox one.

You just watch, they will 'fix' the issue by decreasing the quality of the textures. But the patch will take another 30GB to install worse textures!

Hey Bethesda how about release the game in working order? It's your fault you released it in its current state, you should give a refund and withdraw all current copies and distribute the game with the patch. This is not a finished product so you fix it.

I sincerely hope the fix isn't to reduce graphics. Only in heavy combat do I see the drop to which your shouldn't do anyways. Do the update right the first one please Beth!

The game should have been 900p on both consoles for a smooth 30.

I am not having any issues at all and I have about 10+ hours played so far. I get maybe a second or two of slower frames when entering a new zone by loading screen. All other times the frame rate has been stable even with a lot of stuff happening.

I am surprised it is working this well for me at launch. I believe there will be further tweaks from the team and hopefully with the new OS upgrade to the Xbox One maybe that will boost the performance as well.

It has been smooth sailing for me so far. I even saved and reloaded probably ten times outside Diamond city (first time the player gets to the gates) and it never once dropped to 0 frames like it did in the video. There is some hitching here and there of maybe 1/4 of second at most but I have been really impressed with how smooth the game has been for me.

I am honestly blown away that I could play 15 hours into a Bethesda game, at launch, with out any significant problems hampering the experience.

I'm experience stuttering and framerate drops on the Xbox One as well. I am also unable to even start the game at this point as I can't get past the "push any button to start game" loading screen.

I figured out how to get Fallout to run a little bit better on my Xbox One.
Step 1: Don’t bring a companion, they are just one more thing to render, also they will just walk in front of you all the time and make you mad, you need to stay positive to play through Fallout 4 on console.
Step 2: Never go to downtown Boston.
Step 3: Fast travel whenever the game starts to chug, the wasteland cache seems to clear upon fast travel loads.
Step 4: Never walk on paved roads, they have uneven surfaces and make you bounce up and down, an annoying problem made worse at low frame rates.
Step 5: Almost never sprint, the game cannot keep up with itself if you move too fast, also you will need you AP for when you are forced to use V.A.T.S because your frame rate is dragging on the ground.
Step 6: Never use the power armor, the game just cannot take it, and more egregiously the power armor is just not fun.
Step 7: Never look NPCs in the mouth when you are talking to them, not only does their mo-cap look terrible, but on Xbox One it often lags behind making it unwatchable, instead find an object in your living room to stare at while talking to your favorite NPC.
Step 8: Have a liter of beer on hand to swig from during the long loading screens.
Step 9: Just stop trying to craft anything, every time you scrap a type writer for it’s screws, someone in the wasteland turns to cannibalism.
FINALLY Step 10: Continue using your $249.99 LaCie USB 3.0 SSD that you are supposed to be using as a working drive in your video production work.
If you follow these ten simple steps, you too can play Fallout 4 on your Xbox One.

So we bought a game which I shouldn't use as I want to make the FPS better? Sorry that's not my fault.

And screw you to the idiot who said I have a chip on my shoulder. I paid full price so I should get what is promised.

No problems on the XBox ONE.

Best Practice for XBox ONE:

- Disconnect from the Internet. Load the game from disc.

- If you've got the digital version turn everything else off and download the game and leave it alone.

- DO NOT START even if it says READY TO START.

- Reconnect to the internet and download required patches by selecting the game.

There you go. Loaded up much faster and will work fine.

Been playing with the day one patch for over 20 hours and I haven't had any problems. But I know overheating is still a thing for xboxs even if no one is saying anything about it. That might be something to look at for people who have stuttering or low fps.
