Free anti-virus software

Post » Tue Dec 14, 2010 9:54 am

My subscription to Kaspersky is almost expired. It was a 6-month trial, and I don't think I want to pay for it.

I don't expect it to be free and great.

Thanks in advance.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

It gets great reviews, both for high-detection rate and minimal resource usage. Plus, it's free

Avast! and MSE are both good. Avast! is more proactive, whereas MSE is more retroactive.

Is AVG not recommended anymore?

Definitely not. AVG went down the crapper quite a bit ago. It hasn't been good since the 7.5 days, and gotten progressively worse with each major release.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but which is better? Avast! or Norton? Or is Norton crap?

Avast!

Granted, to be fair, it's been about 2 years since my last shakedown with Symantec's Antivirus, so it may have improved since then, but the entry cost and "Once bitten, twice shy" means I'll probably never use it again.

Do you think it would be worth switching to Avast? I get Norton free with my internet service so cost isn't an issue.

IMO I don't think Norton is as bad as many would have you believe. It might not be the absolute best on the market, but it sure as hell ain't the worst. Even though I no longer run Norton I don't really have a problem with it. I do admit to hearing alot of people hating on Norton, but TBH I don't know where alot of that comes from, I've never had any serious problems with it that weren't my own fault to begin with.

As far as free AV goes, I'm currently running Malwarebytes (I also have Kaspersky too).

there are free one for sure. I don't know any personally so I couldn't say for sure how good any of the free ones are since i don't have security for my computer as I have no internets and viruses are not a threat to me.

MSE for sure. BTW I recommend using Malware's Anti Malware tool as well since it doesn't conflit with your antivirus and it's an extra (and quite good) detection/remove tool.

I recently decided to run MSE and I had a http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=TrojanDownloader%3AASX%2FWimad.CJ infection. It listed 3 MP3 files as infected. (In 2 locations including a USB drive.)

I've since decided after almost 8 years of not running real-time software to run MSE all the time. This is my first trojan and I suspect it's my roommates fault through the network. His computers was doing everything it says this trojan does needing a reinstall. (Which has shared the USB stick between both computers.) Mine wasn't, but doesn't mean it wouldn't start if the files are there.

Long story short, use MSE for all the reasons mentioned before me posting.

Avira and Avast have better detection rates, faster scans and use less memory than MSE.

Using Avast now. So glad I got rid of AVG, it was a slow pig. Avast is fast, and it has a gaming mode! :D
