Free Morrowind for PC from Bethesda?

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 2:56 am

I went into Gamestop to see if they had this by chance (I figured they wouldn't since it's been at least 6 years since I originally bought it)
and was told that they don't sell it there, so I was about to buy a gamestop gift card to purchase it online when the salesman told me I could actually download the game for free from Bethesda now.

Seemed legitimate since you can download the older TES games from here but I'm not seeing it anywhere.

Am I missing something or was my salesman just mistaken?

Thanks for replies.

He was mistaken, Daggerfall and Arena are available for free but Morrowind isn't. Morrowind is still for sale on http://store.steampowered.com/app/22320/.

Better than Steam order the GOTY disk set from Amazon or Best Buy .com . You can also Google Morrowind GOTY for a store nearest you. That's what I did 2-months ago. Picked-up MW GOTY at Best Buy, installed the disks, installed the MGSO mod (a beauty-graphic overhall compilation) and began play all in the same day.

You can get the GOTY for quite cheap on ebay too.

I remember when they released Arena for their 10th anniversary and then Daggerffall for their 15th. I wonder if they will release Morrowind or the Elder Scrolls Adventures Redguard and Battlespire for their 20th in 2014?

I would really like to see them release TES III: Morrowind as a free game at that time. If OpenMW or any of the other engine rewrite projects was completed at that time, it would truly be fantastic to have Morrowind available for free.

If they're ever going to release Redguard and Battlespire (dear Bethesda: PLEASE DO) it's likely to be at the Morrowind anniversary.

But I'm not sure what's going to happen with Morrowind come the 5th of May. I just hope they do something.

I see Daggerfall/Arena as being a bit of an exception, and don't expect to see Morrowind to be free. At least not for many, many years.

Dagerfall/Arena shouldn't be free anyway. They belong on GOG with all the other old classics...

Seriously? How do fans suffer as a result of Arena and Daggerfall being free?

They don't suffer from it being free, but they definitely suffer from it being non-supported. The advantage of an outfit like GoG is that they package up the old games with a functional and transparent DOSBox installation, and apply any fan-made patches that are out there. And then they provide support for the product.

Did I say fans suffer...? No.

I just think the games are too good to be free.

I have to agree, after playing both Arena and Daggerfall, I'd gladly pay money if I was required to do so.

So would I. And the nice thing about Good Old Games is that they give you some cool extras with your games, like manuals and soundtracks and such. I would love to have that for Arena and Daggerfall.
