Free roam or no free roam?

Post » Wed Aug 25, 2010 11:29 am

i personally DESPISE free roam shooters, nobody knows who they're shooting in, Red Dead and in GTA IV i'd just be walking round getting into things and some stupid jerk blows me away with a shot gun, now in Red Dead i'd just hunt them n they're gang down but i'm not very good at GTA IV either way though people never think that, because i'm not shooting them i'm not hostile and there fore in don't wan't to fight, i just want to explore things, for some reason they always think i'm horrible at the game, they're super ninjas and i'm a coward and that's why i'm leaving the area without my gun equiped or shooting at them. keep dreaming kiddo's. <_< anyways which would you rather for Brink?

How is this related to Brink?

was wondering if you'd rather roam around container city instead of entering matches and such but i guess that's why you should read the full sentence isn't it? i was using Red Dead n GTA IV for examples since they're free roam shooters and i hate it's free roam online.

Having free roming in a game depends entirely upon the game in question.

I ADORE free roam. Sprinkle a little of your own imagination into it and a game like San Andreas can be anything you want it to be. A free-roam FPS, though? Hmm...I don't know about that.

A free roaming aspect doesn't work for all games. It's essential for TES to have a big open world, that's what the whole game is built around, but for a multiplayer shooter like Brink (mind you I know very little about this game) it wouldn't be needed.

I can't speak for Brink or multiplayer in general (besides MMOs, where it's almost essential) but in most cases I don't care for it, though it depends on just how open and free we're talking. I prefer a more linear game designed around scripted progression and smaller areas that are heavily populated with NPCs, events, etc. Backtracking through areas is fine, as is exploration, but I find that too much freedom generally hampers a game and its story's pacing.

The Legend of Zelda is about the only series that I like that level of free roam (http://www.gamefaqs.com/wii/928519-the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/faqs/46445' being the largest Hyrule yet if I'm not mistaken, excluding Wind Waker's largely unpopulated sea), and http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/final_fantasy_ix_world.png are my ideal setup.

Edit- Oops, forgot Metroid. Love me some http://jansenprice.com/metroid/met3_sm/sm_map_censored.jpg, even if it isn't necessarily "free" until you acquire certain abilities.

I prefer free roam but can also do without it in certain RPG's.
Freedom is a must for me in a video game as I hate linearity.
Certain RPG's follow a linear system in progression of the story but each area has choices and exploration to a degree.

Only game I've bought in the last 5 years that was linear was Dead Space and that only cause I liked the "B-shock horror" theme of it.

I love free-roaming games - GTA, Saints Row, RDR, Fallout, Skate, etc. It adds so much to the experience.

Not a nice thing to say. Why?We all are different and we have different opinions/views/beliefs,it's a good thing.
From games u mention i like only Fallout. So?Nothing,it's just a persons playstyle.

Even if someones svck on games, doesn't he have a right to play?I don't like pro players to be honest, they think they are above all else and in the end,it's just gaming.

We make war out of anything, without any purpose or reason.Chill, listen to music,i propose Bob Marley ;)

I'm no pro-gamer, but if you're cowering in the corner begging NPCs not to shoot you, games like GTA probably aren't for you. Also I hate Bob Marley.

I love open-world games whether they're RPGs (i.e. TES etc) or shooters (or "shooters", i.e. Stalker etc) and find myself becoming quickly irritated with games that tend to lock me out of areas I want to explore, things like Teh Witcher and Dragon Age being particular culprits in this regard.

Then again I'm a non-awesome player and hate any multiplayer malarky.

Edit: how come I only spot the typo half a second after submitting my post...? Grr.

Freeroam is pretty cool. But sometimes Im into linearness. I forget what game it is called but it was linear and free roam sorta. Like you could do any missions anyway possible. I think it was Deus Ex Invisible War...

I like it, but not just for its own sake. There has to be a compelling reason for me to explore. No point having a large world to wander around in if it looks rubbish or there's nothing much to do.

Most of my favorite games are those that allow you to freely explore an open game world. While I don't think that this is the best thing for every game, especially ones trying to tell a tight, well paced story. Though even this isn't impossible to do under these conditions I would think. I just like that these open world games give you a sort of freedom to tell your own story, that which breaks away from the standard goal the game itself puts in front of you. Half of the fun that I found in games like Morrowind, New Vegas and the like, was exploring and getting into a number of misadventures that I could rightfully call my own.

I think I might be getting drunk.

Anyway, I generally prefer games which are open-world (free-roam or whatever) like Morrowind, but it doesn't bother me much if the game's world is not open if it is done well (like e.g. in Dragon Age: Origins).

To Free Roam, or not to Free Roam, that is the question. Well, my answer is, both. I fully enjoy open world(free roam) games like TES Games, and I also fully enjoy completely linear games(or not completely linear games), like the Final Fantasy Series, or NWN, or Dragon Age, or, or, well, you get the point. They both have their particular appeal and magic to them that makes them fun. To say one is better then the other is folly imho.

Ever since I have known about free roam, I haven't liked a game that doesn't have it. Way more fun then when they give you a path to follow and you can't go venturing off on your own. Way more fun to go anywhere you want!

I remember playing HL2, which came along before I'd even encountered a free-roaming game, and I probably spent as much time exploring the nooks and crannies and trying to find my way into what ultimately turned out to be totally inaccessible areas. Shame, really. I just like exploring, even if there's nothing much to do. :)
