free speech in Cyrodill

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 6:24 pm

Hello,

I'm wondering how much freedom of speech exists in Cyrodill.
The Black Horse Courrier is obviously writing what the Elder Council wants it to write, as it is founding it. It contains lies, as when it states Caula Voria was a loving wife to Uriel.

Could free speech and free press exist in Cyrodill ?

thanks

There seems to be enough to let a "prophet" like the one in Knights of the Nine or the one in Mournhold to speak what they believe is the truth, such as the one in Mournhold spewing about a Daedra invasion and the end of the world.

The Black Horse Courier never seemed to be censored or anything like that, pretty much always telling the truth.

There's probably more in Cyrodill than there was under Helseth in Mournhold. You don't hear any real examples of any types of literature being suppressed in Cyrodill. One can buy books on the Daedra at any book store, even in devout cities with many chapel goers. Books on Necromancy don't seem to be as common, except for the slanted mage guild version, but they do exist.

Oblivion's Cyrodiil seems to combine the middle ages with Victorian morals and literature. Alessia Ottus for a start, could be straight out of an 1870 book on housewifery. Their attitude to religion and freedom of the press (though the newspapers are biased in favour of the Crown) seems more at home in a 19th century democracy than a medievalesque world of assassinations and propaganda that it is supposed to be.

Plenty of free gossip though.
