Freedom or Skyrim?

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 7:30 pm

So we all know they are not bringing back Levitation or Mark/Recall spells.
They have also removed spellmaking from Skyrim.
They said it broke dungeons and events people worked hard on.
But what about that phrase "Do what you want to do"?
What if you want to levitate through a dungeon?

The question I am asking is:Is it right to limit player freedom and play the paths they have set for us,rather then make our own paths?

It is pretty debatable, but I think there can be such thing as too much freedom IHMO

well they are trying to give you as much freedom as they can without destroying the actual game, that is why they took levitation and mark/recall out. They also took classes out so you could have more freedom and just play how you want to play. And honestly I think they removed spellmaking because it was useless, I am not sure but I think their new system includes just the spell effect so your list will never become cluttered and outdated so you dont have to be constantly making new spells just for the same spell effect

How about this

for everything they removed

they didnt add aspects that needed those features to be addressed

so there isnt multilevel dungeons that can be scaled with levitation

It's all based on opinion. Some people enjoy being able to do anything even if it has the potential to break the game. Others like a smooth running game that still has tons of content in it. There probably numerous opinions in between as well.

Firstly there are threads on this. But to answer...

Levitation and Mark/Recall, I do love them, but the Todd says they break quests - if that is so then it is so. Better to have unbroken quests.

On the matter of spell-making, you now spell-make in real-time although you don't name your spells and you cant combine spell effects into a single instant cast spell which would make mages OP. But that said spell casting now takes time to charge up spells that have variations on power (hence real-time spell modification as per the requirements of the situation). Furthermore, the time it would take to cast 3 or more spell effects would make it obsolete - you are actually better off casting and charging and casting spells then charging up multiple spell effects in a single spell. I loved spell-making but I'm gonna love the new "spell-making in real-time" game play so much more. We have the tools to carve our path in the game and the rules that go with them, there is nothing limiting about these features that cant be considered to facilitate immersion. No need to cling to the past, don't be scared to give something new a go before you decide you don't like it.

So, to give you my verdict. BGS isn't taking away from our freedom, its enhancing it in exciting new ways.

its not breaking the game if the gameworld is designed for said features.

^ my thoughts exactly. Spell making was also an exploit. And there you can still play as a 'class' it just you don't pick it at beginning of game it forms to how you play, so just play the way you think the class of your choosing would

It depends if that feature is good for the game, I'm not sure if Levitation is good for the game.

Why would there be multilevel dungeons that required levitation in skyrim? Nords aren't particularly known for their use of magic

You're right! I wanted to be like Aragorn and behead some orcs, like he did in a PG-13 movie, but I suppose Skyrim needs to be safe for the kids who play M rated games! So much for being like Lord of the Rings, and doing whatever you want... thanks Todd!

its not breaking the game if the gameworld is designed for said features.

Oblivion, Morrowind, and Fallout were some of the largest games ever made. It would be so hard to design the game for certain features, I mean would you like skyrim to come out this year without levitation or next year with it? some stuff just takes too long and isnt worth it

What do you me an limit player freedom? They wont put the spellls in the game in the first place, so youre not limited to anything. IF they put them in the game, then took out the spellls after release, that would be classed as limiting freedom.

True. However, there are consequences to worlds like that. A world like that would require cities to not be separate cells. Separate cells allow the cities to have more detail in them. Then again, this may be avoidable with modern PCs, but not on consoles which just leads back to the system debate again and I personally do not want that. Technology aside, it's opinion again. Some people want a world that allows these things without it breaking while others want one that has lots of detail. It's all opinion. It's impossible for everyone to be happy.

As I said, the game wasn't built with Levitation in mind.

300+ hours of modding to make it just so.

I think the main issue is that some instances can be escaped from with levitation/recall and that would break the quest and wreck the gaming experience.

But the other issue is that if you're levitating and flying about your foe and casting spells or shoot arrows, you're pretty much untouchable by most non-magical creatures in the game. So... levitation is as exploitative as it is fun. Why battle melee style when you can fly around and be virtually untouchable unless every enemy is a mage/archer.

and why would you think it would take the devs any shorter? they dont have time for some features and yeh they may have more than one person working on it but its not gonna be all 100 and something of them, it would be like 1 or 2

I think the lame excuses for axing these are just that, lame excuses.

The excuses are simply a mealy-mouthed way of saying the dev staff was not smart enough to design the world they are supposed to be making...

I don't see a Skyrim vs freedom here, is more like MQ vs freedom. They prioriced the Main quest over some features that could be very interesting outside it.

"The world they are supposed to be making?" lol. I wasn't aware that some third party had this blueprint for Skyrim that Bethesda was supposed to follow. It's more like the world they want to make.

Agreed. If I wanted to shoot stuff from the sky levitating, I personally would also like melee oriented enemies to not just stand around like idiots, but seek shelter or hide in a hallway where I couldn't fly away if I followed them..

but that's entirely too much for for a game released with a few years of dev time. To implement everything people want would take ages. Not only to do, but to get it all working together in a reasonably stable way.

Levitation would require better enemy AI, better environments (and ones that won't break quests if they're approached in a way the Devs didn't intend), and a ton of other things just to make it "better instead of taking it out"

Solution? Give it the axe. Sorry, but implement cool things that are feasible. I loved levitation, but if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. People who say "well they should just improve it instead of take it out" apparently don't get that "improving" a feature so that it meets the requirements of the devs and lots of fans might not be feasible.

The lack of levitation irked me, but I understand the lack of mark/recall. We have fast travel now, and a lot of the dungeons had a "loop-back-to-the-exit", or a backdoor that emerged with you back outside in oblivion. I would't doubt they'd keep that design.
