A Freeware Guide

Just discovered this one yesterday. It's a very nice software which inferes equations from a series of number. According to the article "it was fed information on a double pendulum and in just a few hours it inferred Newton's second law of motion and the law of conservation of momentum from the data." ( http://www.physorg.com/news179394947.html )
I am currently testing it with some oil and gas exploration data to try to test it and move further in risk anolysis.
If you are interested to download it, it's only 12 Mb : http://ccsl.mae.cornell.edu/eureqa

Updated. Fixed some links and added a few programs (two more to go, but didn't finish running them through their steps yet)

Miranda - IM-powerful mutliprotocol IM that is highly customizable
SMPlayer - Powerful frontend for the powerful MPlayer
Malwarebytes - powerful malware remover
Fences - nifty icon organizer
CD Art Display/CoverGloobus - nifty CD art program for current playing music
aMSN and emesene - These last two, originally I was against single-protocol IM clients, but the features they implemented were too staggering to not include them. I highly suggest trying them out if you use the MSN protocol and don't like WLM. Mac OS X users in particular should try out aMSN.

As usual, you spot an error I made when editing, please do tell.

I'm looking for a program that can detect if a scratched or damaged disc is too damaged to run properly (i.e. lots of errors and stuff, won't install, that sort of thing). Um. What would such a program be called? What's a good freeware program?

I've got some scratched PC game discs, and before I list them on Switchgames, I want to know that they will still work.

A good many of the applications in the guide are cross-platform. There is also http://www.playonmac.org/en/ and http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/ (website currently down) for running Windows Applications on Mac

Knowing exactly what you are after, though, would be helpful.

http://www.xvid.org/Downloads.15.0.html *Use it for Virtual Dub*
Operating System: Windows 32 and 64bit *Believe Xp and up to windows 7*

As mentioned I use this for the virtual dub program and absolutely love it. It's a bit of a pain to get used to and figure out, but once you do it is great to have. You install the program in the codec folder for virtual dub so the xvid.dll file is there. Then in virtual dub you select compression and choose the xvid codec from the list then hit configure. The only thing to pay attention to if you are just an average video compiler like myself if the slider bar. Set this to 3.00 up to 5.00 and you will be good to go *hit ok then ok to get back to your video.*

I use the Xvid codec in combination with virtual dub to compress my fraps videos down to more manageable sizes. Largest file i've dealt with is a 2.21 to 2.3 gig file uncompressed AVI and saved it as a compressed avi turning it into a 60 to 140mb file which isn't too shabby imho. Found very little if any loss of quality in the video.

Thought I would bump this thread to ask if anyone knows a simple macro program - I'm trying to record a left-mouse-button click and have it repeat a few hundred times (to save me a lot of effort managing my armies in Mount & Blade) and was wondering if anyone had a good suggestion?

AutoHotKey should be able to do it.

some script like

^LButton::Send {Click 100}

That will click 100 times when you press the left mouse button while holding control.

I've got a feeling my brother is going on certain sites he shouldn't be using my computer, then deleting the history afterwards. Any lightweight programs that keep track of web history regardless of if it's deleted from the regular history you could reccomend? I'll be pissed if I get in trouble for this.

Parental control software like that is often extremely invasive and highly proprietary. There are two tools I can think of (though only one is really a tool, the other is a combination of sorts)

1. http://explore.live.com/windows-live-family-safety - Now whether this works in private browsing I don't know

2. http://www.labnol.org/software/remote-desktop-monitoring-with-dropbox/13696/. Technically you can do it without dropbox by using the http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=13805&replies=23 and setting it to save somewhere on your computer.

Either tool can be disabled if your brother realizes what is going on. The advantage of #2 is that it will work even if your brother uses proxies or any other exotic setting. The advantage of #1 is that it is more likely harder to notice/disable.

The best solution, though, is just don't let your brother use your computer. Set a password on your computer and, if necessary, use Truecrypt to encrypt the entire hard drive.

ok, those seem like they'll work well enough. As to putting a password on, while it's technically my computer, mum makes me let everyone use it. And my brother isn't very computer savy so he probably won't notice. Thanks.

Is there a program to make me lose connection when I use wifi more often? I noticed sometimes my connection is really good, and it will stay fluent for hours. Is there any program to stop this?
