Freeze During Initial Loading Screen

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:37 am

After I lost my original Oblivion installation when an external hard drive failed, I reinstalled it on another external HD. Now when I try to launch the game the computer freezes when the initial Loading screen appears after the Bethesda intro screens. The loading progress bar doesn't advance, and I have to use the power button to shut down the computer. A reinstallation of Fallout 3 on the same HD works normally. The game was installed from the original Oblivion, KOTN and Shivering Isles discs, and the latest patches were applied. My original Oblivion folder in the My Games folder was preserved, as it is on an internal HD. I tried moving that folder to a backup location to cause a new Oblivion.ini to be created during game launch, but that had no effect on the freezing.

Keep the new INI. Are you running any unofficial mods? Have you tried doing a clean boot or resetting your codecs?

Thanks for the reply. I'm now doing what I should have done before posting the message. I deactivated all mods other than the official DLC's and found the game did load. I have been gradually reactivating a few mods at at time and rebuilding the BASH patch each time. With most of the mods now active I still have a working game. The only launch failure I have encountered so far appears to have been due to incorrect ordering of 2 dependent mods by BOSS. It's a slow process, as the BASH patch now is up to about 12 MB.

Delinquent masters and missing masters can definitely do you in. Make sure you are not activating filter plugins.

Thanks again for your advice. I have a functioning game now. My only real remaining problem is that when I installed in my new Oblivion installation the same version of the ArmoryLab mod that I had in my most recent save games, the game handled that mod as though it were a clean install, so all the items I had stored there were lost. Items I had stored in another mod-added house still were there.

Maybe the problem lies in the mod itself. I don't get it...
