Freezing & Friends

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:06 am

Hello,

I recently purchased a new computer after my aging rig was approaching its retirement. After installing other games and running it through the motions to make sure everything was okay, I decided it was time to tackle installing Oblivion, Shivering Isles, and a myriad of mods. I followed many of the installation and mod guides to make sure the process went smoothly and I didn't have to mess about with any bugs. Well... consider that mission a failure. Currently I'm suffering from a few issues, but the biggest one is one of the game freezing. The game runs just fine normally and looks beautiful with a number of enhancement mods, ini edits (few, mostly dealing with water reflection), and full graphics on high resolution. The problem comes along during instances of, what I've only determined through estimation, freezing during physics. Examples of this include myself trying to grab a log trap and bash an enemy with it, chasing an enemy back and forth past multi-log traps (resulting in pushing a bunch of objects repeatedly), a bugged out skeleon arm stuck in the ground, and picking up a corpse. All of these resulted in Oblivion completely freezing and requiring an exit via the task manager. It should be noted my computer does not freeze, only Oblivion does. Also, this does not occur everytime I interact with physics objects, but it does seem that everytime I freeze some sort of physics movement is happening. Otherwise Oblivion runs fine with the exception of minor bugs I'll mention below.

Hopefully someone can be of assistance on the major issue, here's my dxdiag and mod list:

Lastly, one other issue I'm suffering from is somewhat minored compared to my freezing issue, but no less vexing. Currently my attacks occasionally will 'stick' when doing a power attack, which means that I cannot perform one. Sometimes this happens in the foward/back attacks or side to side, sometimes all of them. It happens the most with hand to hand, oddly enough, but still does happen occasionally with melee weapons. The only solution I've found to solve this is to either re-load the game, or occasionally it will fix itself after a while. I've searched all over the forums for any mention of this odd bug, but could find nothing. I had this issue on my older computer, but it was rather uncommon; however now that I've switched to using hand to hand on my current character, I've found it plagues hand to hand far more than melee weapons, which needless to say is troubling for my character. Any further assistance on this matter would also be much appreciated.

Thank you.

http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/stabilization/outdatedmods

1. Have you tried regenerating your Oblivion.ini file?

2. Have you installed the latest Oblivion patch (or do you already have the GOTY version)? It looks like you do, but I have to ask...

3. Make sure FFDShow is set to ignore Oblivion.

4. Have you tried a http://www.ehow.com/how_5331553_clean-boot-windows.html? That indicates a process conflict, and there are ways to deal with that.

5. Have you updated your video drivers?

6. Have you tried turning of hardware acceleration for sound?

7. Do these crashes persist when you uninstall your mods?

8. Make the recommended INI tweaks to your freshly-generated http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/stabilization/oblivion.

9. I know I am probably forgetting something, but I will check back later...trying to hit a few other threads...

I do not know why you linked Natural Vegetation. I do not use it (or any vegetation mod), is it recommended for stability or something?

1) Yes and no. I regenerated one after installing Oblivion and edited this one to provide better graphics in terms of water reflection. I can try regenerating it again, I suppose.

2) Yes, I have the latest Shivering Isles patch.

3) I'm not familiar with FFDShow, but after using Wikipedia to define it, I do not believe I have it.

4) Yes, with the exception of one AMD service program. I suppose I can try turning that off as well.

5) My drivers are up to date through 2/2/10. I know there's one newer set of drivers but a couple listed bugs have kept me from downloading them. The ones I have work fine with everything else, so I'm not inclinded to update them to ones that could cause other working games to bug out.

6) No, I can try that as well... although I've heard some solutions to computers with onboard sound include turning off music. I don't really like that idea at all as Oblivion would be difficult for me to play without music.

7) Difficult to say. Given the nature of the freezing (not crashes) is apparently related to physics and I have no physic mods (that I'm aware of), this makes it difficult to know where to start. I suppose I could go down the list one at a time, but seeing as I have 130 mods and to get the freeze I might have to play for an hour or so... that'd take a very long time. If I had a better idea where to look it might be more managable.

8) I did that upon installation. Infact, I followed that very guide when installing Oblivion.

9) No problem.

I appreciate the help.

My concern as it is now is that I possibly made the cardinal sin of modding Oblivion: I didn't do it in small increments. Instead I modded it all and then played, which of course has now lead to a mysterious freezing that has to do with physics somehow (again, that is only my assumption). I've been playing Oblivion for a very long time and I've had all kinds of bugs, but rarely any game-stopping issues that kept me from playing it. I'm begining to think perhaps reinstalling and starting off slow might be the only answer, as hunting down this bug, if it is unknown to the community, might be near impossible to do and extremely time consuming.

I do have a related question, however. Concerning Wyre Bash, when creating a Bash Patch, do you include all recommended mods to be merged or just select a few (like race mods)? In the past I've only merged mods that conflicted with one another (again, like race mods). This time, I merged everything together that was listed as mergable. Which is recommended? I do not think this has anything to do with my freezing issue as I've done it both ways on the current character and the issue persists; however I do wonder if one way or the other is better for squashing other bugs that might pop up.

Anyway, thanks again and I truly do appreciate any further help anyone has. I sorely miss playing Oblivion and right now I cannot play it reliably.

Natural Vegetation is in your load order, that is why I posted the link. I think you should remove it. This is the Natural Vegetation plugin: Natural_Vegetation_by_Max_Tael.esp <--search your load order

Edit: #7 Is a blanket question. I just mean do the freezes persist when you uninstall all of your mods, not one-by-one or anything. This does not sound like a problem related to a specific mod, but using mods generates all kinds of surprises...

Oh, so I do. I thought I only enabled the habitat part of Natural Environments. I'll do some of your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks again.

Yes, and you can supplement the Vegetation component with Enhanced Vegetation. (See the link I posted earlier.)

You are using DR5 - so make sure you have the hotfix. The link is in the description on Tesnexus, very near the top.

DR5 original esp has a bug that can freeze the game during certain actions, as a result of an infinite loop.

You know, now that you mention it Skycaptain, I remember on my older computer I did have the hotfix and on this one I do not. Hopefully that is the cause to my freezing, as all instances where this froze, it was either during combat or right after it occured (I don't know if those are the symptons to the issue you had in your mod). I do have a problem downloading the hotfix you alluded to, however; the link at the top of your Nexus page does not work for me. Are there any mirrors for the hotfix?

It does work just fine, I meant this edit in the description: :)

EDIT 9.9.2009

1. The patch link (see below) died: here is a new one:

Maybe it wont work if you click on it? I mean it′s a direct "save to computer" link (a bit silly, but it wasn′t re-uploaded by me), it wont open a webpage. If it wont work in your browser (for whatever reason) when you click it, copy paste it into your address field, a window should popup asking if you want to save the file onto your computer (ie. download it). :)

Yeah, I tried that one several times by typing it in, copying and pasting it in, and it kept giving me an error that it didn't exist. I finally tried Saving Target As... and it downloaded. Thanks a lot, I'll test this out today and see if it solved my issue.

5. Have you updated your video drivers?

My Oblivion is running faster and smoother on older drivers (NVIDIA)

Yes, not all driver updates are improvements...

Hmm, yes but when people DO have problems, it′s a good suggestion to update.

While new drivers may introduce new bugs, naturally, at least they attempt to fix old problems. And while some older drivers may be faster, the optimizations they usually had (and which make them run faster) may cause problems for some people, as agressive optimizing usually (always?) means cutting "unneeded" rutines that could improve fail tolerance but eat performance.

Again new drivers may include new optimizations that cause new problems, of course. I guess the moral of this story is to simply try different drivers than you currently have. :P

Just to update, so far the upgrading Deadly Reflex seems to of solved the freezing issue. I played Oblivion for a few hours off and on without any major issues, so perhaps this weekend will yield more positive results. I still receive the power attack bug quite often though. Does anyone have any insight on that issue?

Have you tried using Wrye Bash's "repair abomb" fix on your save?

Isn't abomb the bug that occurs after 200+ hours? My current character is less than ten hours old, I don't believe that'd be the issue. I've always had this issue, actually, but it has only become more pronounced since using hand to hand. I believe it may have something to do switching weapons via hotkeys, but I cannot say for certain. It definately does seem to get worse when I switch from hand to hand to a sword and back again, as sooner or later, one of the two weapons will be bugged in this fashion. Note that usually this bug will only afflict one weapon type at a time. So if it affects hand to hand, swords will usually work fine and visa versa.

Very odd and what's even stranger is I've tried looking for this problem on these boards and found only a few people even referring to this issue.

Hotkey mods can cause conflicts as serious as any other mod. It really depends... Are you using a Hotkey mod or any other UI mods? Repair abomb does not have to happen after 200+ hours. That is just a rough estimate. Try that sort of fix should not hurt anything, and better safe than not. You seem to have pretty much homed in your issue, however. Have you mad sure bUseJoyStick is set to 0 in your Oblivion.ini. I cannot remember whether or not it is set by default, but having that set to 1 has caused trouble for enough users...

I'm not using any hotkey mods, yet I am using DarkUI. I suppose I can try to repair the abomb, if this problem persists. It is funny that you mentioned the joystick issue, however; it seems that my .ini file was set to bUseJoystick=1 by default. Perhaps you are right, and maybe that is the source of this issue with power attack. I shall experiment later today and see if it (or any other bug) has improved. I cannot imagine why using a joystick would be on by default for Oblivion... yet there it was.

Yeah...The latest Official Patch did not fix everything (as if you had not already noticed.) That is not the only default tweak that is problematic either: http://sites.google.com/site/oblivionpoinfo/stabilization/oblivion.
