Freezing Water

Curious to know if there will be any parts in the game where the water is so cold it will damage you, since you won't traveling into oblivion this time, it would be nice to have some pure hostile environments that you have to go through

It wouldn't surprise me if there were areas like. I believe it was stated that there will be glaciers so if you could/would go into that water it should cause some kind of ice or water damage.

Doubt it, unless Bethesda implements a "New Vegas hardcoe" mode

I though this thread was gonna be talking about using ice spells to create "stepping stones" across the water... :(

Every time I get quoted I get so happy it's scary

I feel exactly the same way

OT: The problem with this is how would we know if it is cold enough to damage you. In real life it is easy to gauge temperature but it would be hard to show in game without something regular to the "damaging" water like ice floating in it which in my opinion is less realistic than not getting damaged by water. Not to mention the annoyance of having intraversable places only serving to make the game world feel smaller.

Anyone played battlefield bad company 2 campaign? (I think it was that). There was a freezing wind up in a mountain where the screen would turn into ice and if it was totally iced you'd die. A similar system could work in Skyrim, when you jump into freezing water/walk in extremely cold areas without fur clothes your screen could start turning into ice, to warm you it s extremely cold. At first it wouldn't damage you, but soon it'd start doing it. Also, in a way that doesn't let you walk around casting heal spells in ice cold areas either.

The idea as presented wouldn't make sense from a physics standpoint to have the water doing damage. Remember, water freezes at 0 C. So you'll never find water below 0 C (unless it's got anti-freeze). Ocean water may freeze about a degree lower than that.

Now, the reason cold water causes hypothermia in real life is what happens after you leave the water. If there's wind, the air blowing over your wet skin causes evaporative cooling, which eventually causes hypothermia minutes later. In fact, the temperature of the water is largely irrelevant. In cold air, it doesn't matter if the water is 0 degrees or 20 degrees.

So...we can have a situation where all bodies of water, regardless of water temperature, cause damage, but only 5 minutes after you leave the water...or we can just forget about it.

EDIT; The water is unlikely to be pure so can be below 0 C

Try chilling in 1 C water for a few minutes and see how good you feel.

Impurities have a very minor affect on freezing point. Also, read the rest of the sentence before responding, please.

Feels cold =/= actual damage. It would take, as you said, several minutes of sitting in cold water to sustain any real damage to your body.

Get better

Trying hard to.
Only reason I posted a reply in the first place, was because of supercooling. My original unedited reply was going to allude to this but then I though about context and how supercooling would never occur in these circumstances.

Well fur clothes will not protect from freezing in water, making water do some damage isn't hard even in Oblivion ( Magma in oblivion just water with some settings tweaks) about other yes thats will be great, screen decals was confirmed so adding such freezing to screen will nice FX as well for Ice spells, also devs say wind will be more important so maybe ice cold wind will be also available, also cold resistance will have more importance in game as well as Nords will be more unique as available race.
I use Duke Patricks Basic Hypothermia II in Oblivion it's really immersive mod

It sounds good, so in this case do Nords get to swim, and argonians freeze?

The cold probably won't worry a Nord, due to resistances, but they did experiment with a "natural" frost damage area effect in Oblivion. Maybe it will return.
I was just thinking about the temperature of the water, and the idea that there will be dynamic waves. If it's all frozen, it will just be like wave hills of ice.
If it was a dynamic climate that freezes most of the year, with a short thaw period, that would be very interesting.
I get the feeling from the lore that many frozen lakes will be vampire dens.
I can see the ocean not freezing up, but there can't be much in the ocean, right?

It sounds weird, but unless you have 100% resist frost, I think the mission in Bloodmoon where you swim into the ice cave to activate the sea stone thing is probably the most ridiculously superhuman feat ever performed in an Elder Scrolls game. And yes, I think cold water should have negative effects.

Edit: Ok. That and shooting fire out of your hands.
