Frequent and Intermittent CTD's

Post » Wed Oct 08, 2014 5:59 am

I crash to desktop randomly and frequently enough for it to be a little bit annoying. It's roughly every 15-30 minutes, ususally on loading screens (fast-travel or going in/out of buildings), but has on occasion been completely random (in the middle of a field or whatever).

I've checked my load order with both BOSS and LOOT and have cleaned all the master files (DLC etc.) with TES5Edit, no errors are apparent in Mod Organiser but I was wondering if there was anywhere I can look to see if there is a conflict or issue that could be causing such a frustrating problem?

Here is my load order, in case anything is obvious.

Thanks!

Is the game just closing or actually freezing and crashing

If you have too many high texture mods etc you could be running out of RAM at which point the game closes

Well, CTDs can be a sign that Skyrim for some reason stopped responding to "windows". That may be a graphics call or controller, whatever. Could be a bad memory stick that has gone down ways.

Why does this happen in your game you ask.

Well, there are some things you can try since you cleaned and checked your mods, re-processed the last ones too.

So. Using SKSE? Are you using lots of memory for your Skyrim installation? Texture overhauls and adding more NPCs?

Try adding this to the SKSE.ini in the SKSE folder

[Memory]defaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768scrapHeapSizeMB=256

You can lower the 768 if you have a reason too. You can not raise it nor change the 256 one.

You can also add the

[General]ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

if you think you got a bloated game for some reason.

Delete your Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini and let the game recreate then as you load it up after deleting them from the My Games/Skyrim folder.

Take a look at ENB boost if you need even more memory for textures.

You can run ENB boost without any graphical changes and only take advantage of the memory re-mapping that it does.

There are some changes you can make in the Skyrim.ini too if you have a really script heavy game, but don't do the insane values suggested in Tweak guides.

Cheers!

How long had you been playing with this exact load order before your CTD started happening? (E.I. did you make this load order today and then right away get the CTD or have you played this same load order for weeks/months now all the sudden you get the CTD? Or some other combination of time there of...)

It's just closing. I do only have 1gb of VRAM (MSI 7850 1gb) but I was seriously hoping that this wasn't the issue.

It was a fresh install, with about 30 mods added straight away (including skyre), the ctd's have been there as long as I remember, which is about two weeks now.

I'll give the .ini tweaks that @Locksley has suggested first thing tomorrow and see if that helps at all.

As for textures, I play with Skyrim HD (lite, and not towns), SMIM, and a few other replacers, water, ice, snow, etc. Nothing I'd consider major. I also play with ENB (Seasons of Skyrim), but to stop this killing my gpu, I play at 1440x810 rather than 1920x1080.

Thanks for your help guys!
