Friendly advice: Don't let your imagination run away with yo

Post » Tue Oct 18, 2011 12:03 am

I want everyone to have the most enjoyable Skyrim experience possible.

That's why I'm worried for some here who let their imaginations run wild on what type of things might be in Skyrim.

For example, I'm not so sure everyone knows exactly what "Radiant story" means.

That doesn't mean there are an infinite number of mind-blowing quests that are completely new every time you start the game.

It means that certain variables of quests will be different based on your character and his experiences.

For example, if your side quest is to go retrieve a sword, but you have already visited X Cave, they might tell you to go retrieve it from Y Cave instead.

Things like helping the group with the giant and them asking you to be in their faction, or traveling funeral parties, or public hangings are NOT examples of radiant story like some here say. Those have been in nearly every extensive preview so far, in exactly the same manner. Those things are scripted.

Also, I hope people with this vibrant, brilliant images of things like Tavern life in their head aren't disappointed with the real game.

I always see topics such as, "What are you expecting in the Taverns?"

And the answers are things like, "Very loud and raucous, with 20+ people in there at a time. Singing and dancing, and grizzled looking mountain men sitting in a corner telling stories of their travels while buying ample rounds of mead for everyone in the place. Meanwhile, a lone, hooded Dunmer sits at a table in the corner, counting his coins and looking around suspiciously. You take a seat at one of the tables and a beautiful barmaid comes over to take your order. While you are waiting on your drinks, you pick up an instrument and begin to play with the 3-4 other Nords already playing instruments and singing. Your character begins to tell his own stories, based on what you have done so far in the world, and then sings songs about them. Then two Nords erupt in a big bar fight and everyone in the whole tavern is brawling bare-fisted. There are broken bottles and chairs flying, and cursing abound.... etc. etc. etc."

Yes, that would be most ideal. But I'm afraid technology just isn't at that level yet.

What do I expect from Tavern life? 5-6 people sitting at tables drinking, using the randomly-processed conversations that you've heard elsewhere in the world. If you want a drink, you have to go up to the counter and "barter" for it. AND THAT'S OK. It will still be a nice experience as part of an awesome game. BUT, I'm not going to let myself expect something unreal that quite obviously isn't going to be able to happen.

Like I said, I am pumped for Skyrim and want it to be awesome for everyone involved. I just hope that everyone whose expectations are in another world right now aren't disappointed when it's a little more basic than they had imagined...

Umm ... ok. I really just want an upgrade from OB to be honest. Some of the 'improvements' they have made make me more worried than thrilled, but I'll see once the game is out.

That's what I'm expecting/hoping for.

I just want some more Oblivion with some little things fixed and slightly better graphics.

Anything better than that is a real bonus.

We already heard Todd say that Oblivion to Skyrim is a lot less of a jump than Morrowind to Oblivion.

Pessimists are always happier than optimists.

Optimists are either proven right about something or disappointed.

Pessimists are either proven right or pleasantly surprised.

I keep my expectations realistic, it's a much happier way to go through life.

I agree with you completely, we as humans sometimes set ourselves up for disappointment by expecting far too much.

Why would you guys want the same car (game) with a new paint job? I'm guessing you guys like Call of Duty. I for one, like the idea of a NEW game being DIFFERENT then the game before it.

I expect to be able to invent the camera through a long and complicated Mage's Guild quest, then using said camera and high speechcraft skill, convince my in-game wife to participate in the world's first pormo with two wood elf men.

If this isn't in game, I'll be demanding my money back.

Lol, i am sort of expecting OB, in a new world, with smaller additions than was in it's predecessor. Same as i expect with any sequel to any game.

My expectations are realistic. I did lol at your tavern example, if you truly have read that, i have to believe whoever posted it is just majorly excited, and letting their minds run wild with ideas.

"Ow I really hope they add ********"
"If ******* is not In, I'm gonne cancel the pre-order!!!!!"

Buddy, I don't think this is a sequel in the sense that your thinking of it. It's not like the COD games where the sequel is just there to continue the story set up in the first. Each game is standalone and drastically different than its predecessor.

You know what a sequel is?

For your example image having a 2007 Ford Mustang and wanting to buy a 2011 Ford Mustang. Make the color anything you want for all I care.

How overbearingly odd of you.

That's why I'm worried for some here who let their imaginations run wild on what type of things might be in Skyrim.

Are you sure it's not due to your futile attempt to gain respect from random, unknown folks?

For example, I'm not so sure everyone knows exactly what "Radiant story" means.

Do you?

Thanks for that juicy tidbit, Captain Obvious.

Really appreciate you letting us know how it really is based upon your many hours of playtime with the game. Wait... you haven't gotten any hands on time at all, have you?

Thank you captain obvious for clearing up that this isn't COD 6.... i can sleep good now.

What i actually meant, was i wouldn't care if not much has actually changed since Oblivion. Oddly enough i did know that it would be a new story, set in a new world. I'm not like most, gonna ditch my pre-order as Werewolves ain't in, or that a spear isn't in the game. That is all small, minor none-game-breaking things to me.

So no, it is definately a sequel in the way im thinking. More TES. More win. Oh and Dragons, feel rude not to mention them.

Wouldn't you guys say that satisfaction is the death of desire. Sometimes looking out for something can be just as good as having it, if not better.

I totally agree with you, although it's been confirmed that there are randomized infinite quests. They just won't be on par with the other, hand-written ones.
