Friendly reminder: The cash shop was debunked.

Summary: the "cash shop" was a miscommunication. The only actual things a player would have to pay extra for are extreme changes, such as changing their name, redoing their race/gender, or transferring to a different region server. As of currently there are no plans to add a cash shop in the sense as seen in various F2P games.

I only bring this up since mentions of the cash shop still come up on these forums and its debunking isn't well documented. Might be good to have a sticky post on the matter.

In the wide wide world of MMO's, a single word misused will cause the sky to fall. It's reassuring tho there won't be any 'cash shop', just a service shop.

Please show a link that says that will be for purchase, for RL cash, in the shop.

The only information is what is currently out, and that says nothing about being able to buy Imperials, super horses, invincible armor and nuclear armageddon weapons.

Can't seem to find it :/

I can remember seeing it (upgrade service being available post launch, no pre-orders mentioned - and not the customer support FAQ), maybe I'm going mad

(Until I find it, if I ever do, treat me as a mad raving fool :D shouldn't be too hard seeing as I am )

I don't believe that though. That would mean ZO are morons. Everyone knows how touchy the subject of payment models is and that cash shops combined with subscriptions have been unpopular in the past. So far no game to launch with that model has done well. Some have flopped on a massive scale. Making that particular miscommunication would be a monster booboo. There was also more than a little negative feedback to the announcement of the sub + cash shop model for ESO which ZO could not have been ignorant of. If it was a miscommunication the obviously smart thing to do would have been to clear it up immediately. They didn't.

I don't believe ZO are that stupid. Or maybe I just don't want to believe that. It seems more likely the negative feedback piled up, they realised it was a mistake and changed their minds. But for some reason don't want to admit that.

I think that making a core TES race a part of the Collectors Edition was a crappy move...

But you can't honestly equate a Collectors Edition bonus to something purchasable in a cash shop, can you?

Why should I believe them? Their marketing team calls the shots and they don't care what the devs have said. Even if their marketing team would've announced anything I wouldn't trust them either since they had Plenty of time correcting their "misinformation" regarding the Pre-order/CE-bonuses, and they just didn't...

The original report that started all of the insanity was (iirc) from a German publication. It honestly seems to be a mistranslation ("transcription error") referring to the elderscrollsonline.com/store site. They did respond about it in about the same time they respond to anything -- their marketing team doesn't seem as hyperbolic and reactionary as the Internet "sky is falling" crowd.

That's not true. Possibly you've been on the receiving end of a 'miscommunication'? :P

The interview was conducted by and published on a German site. But it was conducted entirely in English.

http://www.myelderscrolls.de/news/154-eso-interview-abomodell-itemshop-entwicklung%5B1%5D

"There won't be anything like 'bonus points' but we'll have a shop to buy kinda fun stuff and services too, like name changes and things like that. But it's not part of the core game, anything in the core game is included in the subscription price."

That's not a mistranslation. That's what Matt Firor said in English.

I'm still not getting "uber gear and weapons in a RL money cash shop" from "kinda fun stuff and services too, like name changes and things like that." Kinda fun stuff could include outfits/formal dress [think "fine clothes" from Skyrim]. Name changes could include server changes/account switches/someone starts on xbox one and wants to change to pc or ps4 or any combination thereof. We don't know. But people sure do like to get extra exercise jumping to conclusions.

What difference does it make? The former would be complete pay to win and even these guys wouldnt be that ballsy. But cosmetics, mounts, potions etc is the staple of EVERY FREE TO PLAY game. NOT subscription game, but free to play.

They came out with the straw man argument that they werent going to sell zones and instances. Big frigging deal, no one else does either, except for Lotro and those are so cheap that you can make more than enough to buy those in the game with earned store credits. Or just buy a reduced box for 10 bux or less and get everything.

Just because theyre not selling 'content' doesnt mean jack. Theyre already pay gating A race, we can debate if that is content or not but I suspect an overwhelming majority would say a race is content.

If youre paying a sub you should have access to EVERYTHING the game has to offer, end of story. Theyre the ones who went with the sub model and got buried for it. So now 6 months later to run an end around and get people to defend them for selling stuff in a store (whether it be in the game or a website) is just stupid.

I cant wait for the first 'store exclusive' to hit and seeing how people will react. I suspect the usual people who wouldnt find anything wrong with what Zenimax does would love it, most wouldnt.

They milk the people they can for as much as they can for as long as they can. When they figure out a way to make more money they will change the approach.

You mean Zenimax will never sell the Ring of Mara xp boost after launch? Not even cloaked within something like WoW's rent-a-friend, oops, I mean recruit-a-friend plan? Hopefully ESO will be a huge success with monthly subscriptions and won't need to do that but never say never when it comes down to businesses trying to separate consumers from their money.

They really blew when their management decided to do this. OR it is possible that this can be obtainable in game, but later game like the horse.

Wow so much hate I can't comprehend why you still come and post here about a company and a game that you hate so much. If I hated something as much as you do I would just walk away I don't get it lol

Good.

I know the cash shop may be tempting but it is not a sign of quality nor of trust. First, we know that games with cash shops evolve and derail because of them; second, Why I should buy a game, then pay a subcription if the company is doing the same as other dozens F2Ps?. No way.

It's not even about $15 a month, it is about trust and what the company wants to project to the gaming community. They want to be seen as greedy or the honest guys? That's the question they should answer before taking these decisions.

I think it's probably more accurate to call it "Account Services" than a shop or store because that's what it offers.

All we can really do right now is speculate. If they only sell name changes, appearance changes, and other account services, then its fine to me. We have no idea what they will add in the future. I agree that it should remain as only account services. When they start selling cosmetic outfits, mounts, armor, etc. That is what F2P games do, and that is double dipping to me.

With that said, when WoW came out with the Celestial Steed and Vanity pets on their store, I didn't really care... so who knows. I guess cosmetics are okay, as long as there aren't a ton of them. Also, no boosters. Boosters for cash is a bad sign, F2P games do that.

I'm assuming you will be able to upgrade your base purchase to a collector's edition purchase. Which is not really what I consider to be a cash shop purchase but an opportunity to upgrade your purchase at a time more suitable to you instead of being forced to buy the Imperial edition or missing out, which I'm sure most would agree would be a much worse idea.

you can upgrade to the imperial edition in the account store.

I agree with you except of the small fact that you can't buy the individual in game items/race and there is no cash shop to put them in. its a small difference, but it does put emphasis Account shop and not Cash shop.
