Friendly (Or Speaking) Dragons

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 2:24 pm

This may seem stupid, but would you be interested in speaking to dragons, or perhaps encountering friendly dragons, who may be neutral in the battle for Skyrim? I personally believe that the dragons of Skyrim would be much more unique than in other games if you would be able to have conversations with them, or perhaps have friendly ones. I'm not talking "Leafy The Dragon" style encounters here, but if one could speak to dragons and not portray them as typical antagonistic invaders I believe it'd add a whole lot more believability to the game. Any thoughts?

Yes, if they're voiced by Sean Connery.

Well all of the dragons should be able to speak, as they do have their own language, and the player could work to understand what they're saying.

But since I lean towards the "dragons are the Jills/servants of Time and are therefore wholly and totally devoted to eating this world to begin another" crowd, I would be disappoint to see friendly or neutral dragons. Dragons that speak in a more cinematic or lets-talk-before-we-go-at-eachother style, sure. But dragons that want to shred apart the world nonetheless.

It would be cool if dragons were to be able to display there intelligence by mocking us before the fight, or if we defeat them to try and bargain their way out of death by offering a cool reward. Of course being able to kill them after receiving said reward should be possible too.

I will be very disappointed if dragons are one dimensional mooks for Alduin.

Spoiler I guess:
Spoiler
We already know the player can understand and speak to them as the dragonborn. It would be a shame if that was wasted (in my opinion) by making EVERY dragon one dimensionally evil, even doubly so if the game becomes an extermination quest, wasting any development the dragons could have had.

I would like the oppotunity to speak with a Dragon, even if is was just a "Pathetic Mortal! We do this to save the World not damn it!"

Akatosh also has the benefit of being a mythical compromise with Shezzar/Shor/Lorkhan/Space, therefore allowing for the Time God that actually cares for the existence of the world.

The dragons mocking the player is a great idea, and maybe have more powerful dragons boast similar to Smaug of The Hobbit.

Yes, a really powerful dragon that's all like "You are pathetic mortal, whack away while I nap. And when I wake, I snack." :toughninja:

I cant understand why someone would be dissapointed if you encountered a friendly dragon. Im sure if there was one, it would fit the story.

However, I doubt there will be friendly dragons. maybe, who knows? Theres so little details about the story and the nature of these dragons, or dragons in general, that we just cant know for now. However, since one of the dragon shouts is calling a dragon by name and forcing it to fight beside you, i highly doubt theres a possibility of a friendly dragon.

Because for me personally, it would be boring in comparison to what I anticipate instead. I see the dragons as comparable to a force of nature and their mission as non-negotiable. The inevitable cosmic result of a massive kalpa-spanning metaphysical equation. The thought and will of Time made manifest.

To my tastes, having a friendly or neutral dragon who doesn't care, something that is an outlier, something that makes dragons just dragons, just doesn't compare.

I'll be very disappointed if all dragons attack on site. I would expect some to be neutral until provoked. I would like there to be conversations that may cause them to fly into a rage.

I think it would be Awesome if the dragons could speak, I also don't see them as dumb animals. They should have their own tongue as well as knowing the common tongue (at least)!

They do have their own tongue. It's where the dragon shouts come from. Don't know if it's been said if they speak the common tongue though.

I hope there will be more variation to the dragon voices then just deep. A dragon that sounds like Starscream as you beat him down would be pretty epic. Would have to be whiney like him though too.

Dragons are intelligent beings, assumably with their own agendas. Maybe some of these agendas would do better with the player as part of them instead of trying to have a Playersnack.

That's like saying all Dunmer must have supported slavery, or that every Bosmer supports cannibalism, etc. It's really by definition what one dimensional means. Having dragons being faceless bad guys isn't "mystery" it's lack of depth, in my opinion.

The fact they can talk is a good sign though.
